I rather disliked those games, myself. I mean, they were the most solidly-coded Sonic games in years, and I felt like I should have enjoyed them, but they just...felt really empty, or something. The frequent emphasis on blazing speed and f!@#ing grinding above everything else probably didn't help. I want to kill some enemies or do some exploring once in a while!

I hated the fact that there was only one (sometimes really well-hidden) special stage spring in each area, and backtracking to find it was usually hell, given the one-way nature of most stages. The severe lack of enemies or interesting scenery made the task pretty boring, too.

A lot of the genesis Sonic games frowned upon backtracking.

And yeah, in Sonic Advance 2, iirc, the special stage rings were hidden pretty well. You could only get them on the main route in the first stage.

I can only find the first one

Yeah, that and Amy is impossible to play as due to the lack of rev-roll
and she's suppose to be the easy person ...

And I've only played Donkey Kong Country on the GBA ... and I'm pretty sure it's all 2D there

Thank god that in Advance 2 Amy actually got a ball jump like everyone else.

Awesome.

Though Takashi Iizuka isn't someone I'd trust to handle the games, considering he was in control when Shadow the Hedgehog happened.

But it looks fine so far, just a tad disappointed they're referencing Sonic 1 so heavily and not much else.

I just hope they use their little 'bosses exhibit new behavior after a few hits' thing to make more Mecha-Sonic like bosses.

That last battle in Sonic and Knuckles with Mecha Sonic was a hint at a new era of boss battles, where the boss seemed to actually be trying to kill you, rather than "Oh, you hit me 8 times, I give up."

Unlike the pop-music infused 'space-flight hit experience' which is more like an interactive movie of the boss' defeat, the revenge thing vs. a Sonic-like opponent always felt more.. challenging and interesting.

But that leads me to my other hope--that they put more heavier music in there, like late S&K. It was the guitar-like songs which I liked, and also the sci-fi-ish stuff near the end of Sonic 2. The happy-go-lucky songs of Sonic 1 were fine, but only the Blade-runner esque final stage from there really did it for me.

Ehhh, Sonic 3 has okay music in my opinion, but was a bit too beat-boppy in places. Still, it had better music than a lot of Sonic 2 or Sonic 1.

Can't touch Sonic CD's music (both versions; selected pieces, of course) though.

Well, the worship of it is primarily for the superior graphics and sound action with some twists to the Sonic formula.

Many see it as how a next-gen Sonic game should have been--just a more advanced 2D Sonic game, using fully CD-quality audio and stuff. That's why so many people remained angry no matter what they did with the 3D games--they just weren't what a portion of the fanbase wanted.

Well now it makes sense--many Sonic hacks try to emulate Sonic CD, as Sonic 3K and Sonic 2 gameplay gets a lot more love in official games than Sonic CD.

Hopefully Sonic 4 will turn out to be as good as Mega Man 9 (and 10?) did, when it comes to sequels from classic games.
As for music, Sonic 3 ranges in front personally, due to Angel Island and Hydrocity Zones mainly. Didn't like Ice Cap Zone that much, at least in the first act. Really shortly after this comes Sonic & Knuckles, the Flying Battery Zone really pleases me a lot, also liked the levels from both Sonics most. The other ranks go to Sonic 1, Spring Yard and Marble Zone and Sonic 2's Chemical Plant and Hill Top, Metropolis (!) and Egg Death Zone (the first time it was creepy in a nice way somehow).

Matter of taste, of course. Gameplay-wise I would like those huge-ass levels from Sonic 3, as these encourage you to explore the levels quite a bit (think Hydrocity or Marble Garden).
Hope Sega doesn't blow up this one. Interesting are the details, but I also ask, why put in leading zeros into the Ring counter? It seems like to encourage you "There must not be any zero in front of this counter, get 100+ Rings or you suck!"

You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
