Hey, given the amount of oddball problems I've had with my computers in the past, I was thinking about switching over to Linux. What are the advantages and disadvantages compared to a microsoft OS? I know all about the open source stuff. But there are a few concerns:

1.)Games? Namely Half Life 2 games and emulation
2.)Can I still use windows based programs? Like word and stuff or are there alternatives that work similarly or better?
3.)Malware. Am I safer by switching to a Linux OS?
4.)Files. Can I run everything from .exe's to .mkv's without a problem?
5.)Performance. Will my computer run faster?
6.)System wipe. Is it necessary for installation?

1] You can play a number of Windows games through a program like Wine.

2] You can use some Windows programs again with Wine.

3] Most Malware/Viruses/etc are targeted at Windows machines because that's what the majority of people use

4] Not exactly. .exe files are ran with a program like Wine. Some work well, others don't.

5] Depends in what distro of Linux and what sort of features you install with it.

6] Not required, exactly. Ubuntu has a Windows installer called Wubi, which I've heard works nice. You could also install it on a separate partition. Another alternative would be installing on a virtual machine.

I'm quite sure you can dualboot with Fedora. I'd be wary about Ubuntu - it's either extreme hit, or for people like me, extreme miss.

I've been looking at Wolvix recently, about to see how well that one works... hoping it doesn't overheat this laptop like Slax did.

I installed Debian on a separate hard drive altogether, an 80 GB one. It's large enough to store Linux programs and such on it, but small enough so I'm not wasting any data storage.

The best thing to do is to install whatever distro you plan to install on that hard drive, and whenever you boot up the machine it will take you to the GRUB dual-boot screen. If you happen to reinstall Windows or another non-Linux based operating system, it's quite possible the GRUB boot screen will be deleted, making it impossible to access Linux. At least, I'm pretty sure about it.

I had bad experiences with GRUB and Vista. They didn't play well together at all.

If you install linux when vista's already there, you shouldn't have any problems nowadays.

Back when Vista first came out however...
