So I've been dinkin' around with the SNES devkit just released on X-Cult.

For some reason, I have this habit of going through .exe files with hex workshop. I like to check for any interesting padding or ASCII I can find. This time I happened upon something quite big.

While skimming through SSBUG.exe, I happened upon a hunk of ASCII. The letters SFX caught my eye so I stopped the scroll bar to check it out. Here's what I saw:

Found within SSBUG.exe
----------------------------------------
Offset-373504:

^.M./3./R.about.cpp..PIC/SFX3 hardware is present../R.Trace Card Slot Failed!.Trace Card Failed!..SFX3 present, however Kernel version %s invalid..need version %s..Using Demo Mode......SFX3 unavailable, or not communicating..Using Demo Mode...../2MB..PIC/SFX2+ hardware being used../DSP./G.about.cpp./O..PIC/GEN2 hardware being used...GEN2 present, however Kernel version %s invalid..need version %s..Using Demo Mode...../W..WIRE hardware being used...Hardware unavailable, or not communicating..Using Demo Mode

Offset-372512:

^.M.about.cpp./H./?.SBUG_MODE.GEN2./G.SFX3./3.EU......VW.

Offset-314728:

_^]M.NOB.sfx3.c.sfx3.c.sfx3.c.sfx3.c..o./b./B.sfx3.c.SYM.NOB.BAS.sfx3.c.sfx3.c.sfx3.c.EU......VW.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
SFX3? SFX2+?...
I'm not going to go through all of it, but this thing makes mention to two previously unknown versions of the SFX chip. the SFX2+ and the SFX3...

Anyone wanna' speculate now?

Apparently SSBUG is the the SFX chip debugging software... I guess that makes my claims more legitimate.

EDIT: It was in the readme all along...

What is SSBUG?

SSBUG is the Super Nintendo Development System Debugger. SSBUG works in conjunction with Sculptured Software's SFX development systems (SFX2, SFX2mb, SFX3, WIRE & GEN2) and our 65816 assemblers (SASM,SASM32 & SASML/SLINK); Microtek Assembler for the 68000.

First I have heard of the SFX3. Sounds like some delicious information, wonder if we'll ever see a prototype pop up of the chip...

I'm not entirely sure this is referring to the SuperFX chip. "SFX" was an internal abbreviation for the Super Famicom/Super NES console, so I'm pretty sure they would have referred to the SuperFX chip by its full name (or perhaps another internal codename). SFX2, SFX2mb, SFX3, WIRE and GEN2 likely refer to various development systems made by Sculptured Software, not expansion chips (unless WIRE and GEN2 are two more chips we don't know about, which is unlikely).

Apparently, you aren't the only one questioning this...

Mentions the same about SFX being referred to as the SNES (Super Famicom X) instead of SuperFX and is more likely to SNES SE Software.

Nothing past that, though. :\
