Looks like it just sits there.

Hence when I move out and buy food, its only going to last a week.

I still have maple syrup from when I went to New Hampshire last year left unopened this whole time. =\

It just sits there.

We had some slightly browned salad a few weeks ago. I noticed it looked kind of funny, but not thinking straight I ate it.

I mentioned it to my grandma, who said something about how it doesn't matter and I need to shut up...

...and we all ended up getting the shits.

(Problem is, they didn't learn their lesson either, so the next few times they used the same batch I just left it alone... )

That "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" container from 2003 will definitely be believed when someone opens that container. When I buy orange juice, it only lasts about 4 or 5 days -- I drink that stuff like water.

Quite a few years ago I made the mistake of leaving a glass of orange juice sitting out overnight. When I went to drink it the next morning it had a noxious smell and had actually started to solidify, making what looked like an orange bar of soap floating in the top. I don't even want to think what yours must be like by now.

There's a bottle of mustard in my fridge that expired November 2006, and my mom doesn't want to throw it out. :/

Because it's sweet.

I had a little package of cookies in my pantry that was two years old once, but I usually don't let food expire.

Though there was that year old package of Ham...*shudders*

Every fridge needs a half tub of beef liver and an eight pound can of chocolate syrup.

...restaurants?

When I had to (IB program = community service) volunteer for the canned food drive at school, you wouldn't BELIEVE the crap some people sent. Maybe 95% of the people who donated gave good stuff but I saw eroding soup cans, Jello from 1986, stuff that said "BRAND NEW" on it which had already been out for a few years, etc.

Bottom line: No matter how bad your fridge is, there's worse out there.

Xk, your grandparents need help.

Either they buy more than they can eat, or they only buy food when it runs out.

And, food from 2003 is only halfway back. I don't think I want to see what's behind that. *shudders*

... Aaaaargh.

Normally I tend to resist any unusual side effects from things I eat. Case in point: KFC.

KFC is weird. The just plain chicken gives me the shits but the burgers and popcorn chicken don't (and taste far better).

I don't!

Xkeeper, I hope you move out relatively soon and get your own food. That's scary.

I once had a bag of lettuce that fermented on me... none of the lettuce was really existent anymore, it was just plane juice or something.
