The best part is that my stepsister works there once a week putting liquid cheese on tortilla chips and gets paid more an hour than I did to do the entire fucking website.

There's also the ever present no-I-will-not-fix-your-fucking-computer stories that every IT worker in the world ever can tell. People have an apathy for technology, and will drop anything when it gets the slightest bit technical because it's the technology's fault and not theirs. And they'll happily trade your skills to get the technical thing fixed, before devaluing them and undermining them publicly. This and your story is fucked up, and needs to stop.

Even better is when I'll visit relative name here and then their computer will mysteriously explode. Guess whose fault it is, even if I only poked it or even glanced at it. P.S. FREE TECH SUPPORT JUST DIAL 702-7xx-xxxx! lol

We had a new starter at work a couple of weeks back. Myself and my coworkers were introduced as the "techies" and "not to come to them if you want a question asking, because understanding them is difficult". And this is a dedicated software company. And that was said with me in the room. That sort of attitude is an insult, and betrays a lack of respect for software quality, the software business and IT staff.

Ugh. Seriously.

I have my own family tech support horrors, to be sure. System started bluescreening on boot? Blame me and yell/scream/threaten to call RescueIT because I'm clearly not doing this (free) job.

I also really wasn't aware I could put this crappy forum software on my resume and actually get somewhere with it. Then again I guess taking a 9-year-old piece of PHP and bringing it somewhat up to date and securing it while maintaining an active userbase of about 50+ contributors daily is at least something to be proud of on these internets.

Precisely. I hate the creepy executives who rant on about "mind management" and "self marketing" and all that rubbish, but learning how to present yourself effectively is something anybody can learn and it's not difficult. Think about the broad skillset you've accrued: server management, PHP programming, standards-compliant HTML markup, CSS styling, community leadership, security enhancement and cross-browser interface design. As you have unrestricted access to the software, you could even write a back-end statistic package to demonstrate community activity in an interview. Don't forget to mention the community has also historically been in the three-figure range on the Big Boards leaderboard - only losing our position because our hosting is supported by donation and not advertising and we've moved several times in the past.

Also, having the skill to write quick, secure, maintainable code is really something to be proud of. There are lots of people who write or manage software projects who are willfully ignorant of these issues. The truth hurts for these people and they'll just sweep it under the carpet. Professionally developing software is a big challenge, but the big problem is people who do it just because they can; the ones who aren't interested enough to sharpen their skills and improve themselves.

Well, I've fixed my layout, and the background is new. And I switched my picture back. One less thing to do. And I get tomorrow off. Woo!

Yep, the background in the Purple scheme?

I get tomorrow off, but I have a meeting tomorrow.

At least I get weekends off.

Hey, any schedule works as long as you can get two days off in a row.

Indeed.

I wasn't able to have two days off in a row when I worked at GS. It feels so much better that I can have two days off in a row at this job.

So hiya, I'm Bukkarooo. I've been over at board2 for a while now and figured I'd join here, too, for the hell of it. I didn't think I was important enough to make my own intro thread, so I'm just posting it here. Seems as good a place as any

No need to worry about that, Bukkarooo. We wouldn't have minded if you'd made a welcome thread.

Welcome to Jul, though!

Thanks! What I meant by the not-making-an-intro-thread thing was mostly that, in the forums I've been a regular at, you introduce yourself in a thread and not by making a thread for yourself. It just would have felt a bit weird ^^;

Welcome to Jul, Bukkarooo

Yeah, the IE-style red X would be a tipoff in a non-IE browser that it's not really broken.

I see the new avy now, but I was refering to earlier when it did have the icon of a broken image. I'm well aware that my browser does not use that thing for broken images. :/

And yes, I love this avatar. It doesn't work on a lot of forums I've tried it at, though, so I'm glad it works here!
