Maybe I have weird luck, but Vista has been rock-solid.

Actually, Vista for me has been damn fine for me too.

It's just, installing 7 on our other hard drive screwed the activation for Vista, and we liked 7 enough to just change over.

My friend told me that every computer purchased with Vista or something will get a free copy of Windows 7 as well. Or... something of the like? I'm getting a computer in a week or two that is supposed to come with Vista. Am I going to get my free 7 or what? Because I'd much rather use 7 over Vista.

My brother-in-law's best friend is an IT professional, and apparently IT guys got their hands on the release version of Windows 7 at the beginning of the month, so his friend gave him the OS.

If I can get 7 free and early from my school, you can bet your ass I'll do it. I'll have to get both 32 and 64 bit, though, since my laptop's actually going to benefit from 64bit.

Most likely, it will.

But if it's from Microsoft, then I wouldn't worry about any viruses and such. Plus, the download rate should be crazy fast due to all the people downloading it.

IIRC, I heard some people at school talk about where to get software

The school-issued laptops have all this stuff on them, but a lot of students have their own laptops.
