The "New __________" icons came from a game, yes (you might remember it, even). They're just touched up with color.

The text is all a hand-drawn font from me.

I actually downloaded that video game once to try it. I couldn't get anywhere though because it was all in Japanese

I don't remember the exact name of the game although I'm pretty sure that it was for GBC.

All I ever get lately is a crash; the game just goes to a black screen. :\

Oh well. I did learn it had Othello built-in, though, even though the CPU is extremely easy to beat.

Are you using VBA? It seems to not run well in that emulator, but I got it running in BGB without any noticeable issues.
