They're more like cousins to the Romance languages rather than siblings.

Similarly, Swedish and Finnish are actually not even remotely related. Same with Chinese and Japanese, and Arabic and Persian/Farsi. Of course, many languages borrow words from others (English and Japanese being 2 of the biggest borrowers, IIRC, English from French/Latin and Japanese from Chinese).
