It's amusing how wide thread icons stretch the tables so much.

I guess with some really wide ones, it would even cause scrolling. But I don't think I want to do that...

Not just limited. They're automatically resized to a height of 16 pixels, even if they're smaller. The width, on the other hand, appears to be unlimited.
