This kind of ties in with Portable Apps, but strictly for troubleshooting and the such.

I'll grab it.

I've still got stuff like Prime95 on one of my flash drives. Aside from that, I usually have something like HiJackThis, Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy and an updated copy of Avast! Home on hand at all times.

The only other things I can think of that aren't for critical ops of comp recovery would be CPU-Z, GPU-Z and SpeedFan to get an idea of what some of your hardware is and how it's performing.

I've used Ultimate boot cd in he past for a lot of problem solving and it works pretty well. Might be able to get it on a USB disk.

I've saved a few systems (mine included) with it.

It has a lot of good hard drive utils, at least, which is why I primarily use it...but there's a lot more that it has.

Bart PE is a good place to start when making a custom recovery and diagnostics discs.

F-Secure's BackLight and Rootkit Revealer (part of the sysinternals suite already mentioned) are good automated tools for sniffing out rootkits. Ice sword will help find what those can't, but its really tool to help you find them on your own.

There's a free portable version Avira antivirus, as well as a ClamWin. And although I'm not sure it counts as a portable app, but Microsoft has a free web based version of the Line OneCare scanner, it takes forever but it catches quite a bit.

Also, no diagnostic toolkit is complete without memtest 86.

JDiskReport is another one. Requires Java.

Basically, it displays the information for your hard drive in terms of the most being used on any drive. Good for sifting through drives with a lot of things on them in order to free up a lot of space. Really good on cases where people complain about 'disk full' errors and sluggish comps...aside from using HJT or msconfig to check their startup and services.

I can no longer personally recommend JkDefrag. It came very highly recommended to me, and it worked great on my computer. The trouble is that every computer I've tried it on since has bsod'd. If anyone has used this before, please let me know what you experienced with it. I'll look into this and see whats going on, and let you know. Sorry guys =[

Check if you have a corrupt executable. The MD5 of JkDefrag.exe is 166F80E95A9540EFDDB411CA993FE5C7; the MD5 of JkDefragCmd.exe is 94E7A9966A7EC6F3BCEA61017F8CC021. (Version 3.36.)

Also, there's a bug in Windows XP earlier than Service Pack 3 that causes corruption on SATA drives. It's a known issue; see here for details. (Click on "View and request hotfix downloads" to download the fix without installing Service Pack 3.)

Thanks for that, but I've already checked it. All drives were IDE, and I downloaded a new exe every time. I'm still looking around as to why it's doing this. It was a decent little defragger, and works pretty great on my computer. I'm just not recommending it anymore in case it screws up something. I doubt it will, and it probably can't, but all the same.

I don't think I've made mention of Prime95 but it's an old-school burn-in and stability test for a computer that uses random Lucas-Lehmer iteration torture tests on all cores at 100%. I'm currently beating the crap out of a Q8200 w/ 2 gigs of OCZ PC2-6400 because we've decided to go quad-core instead of dual-core on our systems...so I've got the prototype in today that we're going to use and...beating the shit out of it by all means necessary.

Burn...heheheh...BURN!

It's still not reached thermal with normal clock and stock fan.

EDIT: I should also mention that I'm using SpeedFan to do the dirty work of monitoring it. I'd rather have hardware but it's a poor man's way of doing the monitoring on all four cores as well as the electrical and HD readouts.

Been a while since this had any updates and this looks pretty handy.

So, I was looking at a friends computer, and it turns out that when they last had it serviced, Geek Squad forgot to remove the System Analyzer that they use. I'm looking into it now to see what the licensing is on this. I highly doubt that it's "distributable", though. Looks to have it's own Anti-Virus and stuff packed along with it.

I'll update with more info, anyone else that may know: feel free to fill me in.

Er, so about that software I was babbling about yesterday ^.

Apparently it's highly illegal in the hands of anyone not certified to use it. I checked on TPB for shiggles, and it looks like the latest leaked version is 4.8. The version I have is 5.6.

It has built in virus/malware/spyware/otherthings/generalsystem scanners built it. It's actually pretty nifty. I haven't put the scanners through any rigorous testing though.

Someone at BestBuy screwed up bigtime. I'm just going to, ahem, delete this immediately and pretend I never saw anything.
