GO TO RELEASE

This will be fun.

If you can't figure it out, those are controlled by the mouse, not some weirdass input configuration involving hitting up+select+b.

That.

Was amazing.

How does it work exactly? Do you pick a breakpoint and say "run my code here"? Or does it just run your script each frame or something?

Actually... can you read/write to the ROM in script?

If so, writing level editors in this thing would be really tempting. In exchange for putting up with Lua, you can replace all your drawing code with "call the game's level loader, hijack screen x and y, pause emulation".

I know you can read, but I doubt you can write.

Perhaps I'll request it as a feature?

Yes please, that and being able to force the game to jump to a subroutine would be my big requests. And they'd make for some pretty happy programs.

Jump to subroutine would be good for your replay script too: you could save Mario's x/y, put in the x/y from your replay, make the game draw Mario, and put x/y back in the right spot.

Oh god that was awesome

I love how you can even throw stuff around (as opossed to just placing them there)

For the tiles I excepted that clicking on them would activate them somehow though. Like hitting a block from below or something...

I'm not sure if that's possible at the moment without a lot of hacking (and possibly breaking the game), but rest assured that eventually it's going to do something.

Can you change the tile number at the cursor location when you click?

If so, can you do something where dragging to the left lowers the tile number by 1 every n pixels (change the tile you first clicked, not wherever your cursor is now) and dragging to the right raises the til enumber by 1 every n pixels?

It'd mostly only really be useful to fill in pits and generate item blocks, mind you.

The only prblem is that there's no way to tell the game to redraw the tile (that I know of yet), so...

I've been looking into it, though.

That is outta this world. If I would have randomly come across this video on YouTube with no reference to where it came from, I would so be calling shenanigans. But I happen to know you ARE that talented...i think.. yeah... you are.

Did you do this solely for fun/learning experience or do you have some grand purpose?

I made it mostly for fun, but also to reward the developers for putting in input.get after my requets.

*182405 adelikat_> oh man
*182406 adelikat_> this is fun

So... yeah.

Though admittedly I've gotten distracted for half an hour at a time just from flinging Goombas around, so

Haha.

*091022 adelikat> no wonder FCEUX crashes for you all the time
*091038 adelikat> there is a nasty crash bug that seems to only mess up smb
*091106 adelikat> if the first file you open in FCEUX is not smb, then you open smb, loadstate will crash everytime
*091118 adelikat> if you open smb first, no matter what you do afer that, everything will be fine
*091134 adelikat> and the bug has been there at least since 2.0.2
*091207 adelikat> I'll try to find what is causing it, but in the meantime I suggest you add a path to your smb rom in commandline (or in your fceux shortcut) so it loads on start
*091212 adelikat> that will prevent those crashes

It figures.

Working a bit more on the final design of this (needless to say, it's a bit ambitious, probably will need to cut back)...

*120025 ~Xkeeper> Sonicandtails: two things
*120034 ~Xkeeper> A: Prinny needed
*120043 ~Xkeeper> B: SMB1 video has 4,675 views
*120054 ~Xkeeper> it is 718 away from passing my all-time #1
*120108 ~Xkeeper> and holy balls it jumped again
*120204 ~Xkeeper> oh jesus christ BoingBoing picked it up, no wonder
*120230 ~Xkeeper> http://www.offworld.com/2009/03/the-super-mario-bros-drag-and.html

This is probably the most interest in any of my programming I've ever had, and it's... definitely a change.

I guess I have to work extra hard to get it working just right, hm?

*161254 ~Xkeeper> GoNintendo -> TinyCartridge -> bbOffWorld -> blog.Makezine
*161256 ~Xkeeper> IT KEEPS GOING!
*161341 ~Xkeeper> SONICANDTAILS THIS IS YOUR FAULT.

Still a lot of work to do! Feeling like crap the last few days has not helped.

I'll probably end up taking the oppertunity to freshen up all my other various scripts (many of them still have random broken code everywhere) and release them all together with this, though. Might as well!

Trying to fit in enemy creating, though. If I can get that in, expect another video soon. (With a better interface, for one thing )
