I don't see the fuss. They changed the system to appeal to a wider audience, something every game has been doing in the past few years. This is actually better as well so you don't have to worry about cheaters.

Valve did a smart move with this, keeping achievements as fun things like the 360 achievements while also giving those that just join after an INCREDIBLY HILARIOUS update pulled them in an incentive to joining up and playing without being overwhelmed by older players.

The only thing I don't like about the system is how random it is. You can play several hours and not get anything, while being surrounded by people who do.

But in all honesty... Achievements serve no purpose now. I just don't care about working for them. Regular gameplay is nice, but it's fun to play for the achievements knowing there's something at the other end.

Think of SSBB guys. You play a few stages and at random you get the trophy that most people got by beating boss battles on extremely hard. Is that fair? Does it allow someone to learn how to play the game? The answer is no each time. You, ultimately, earn nothing.

The unlocks were like trohpies you get from beating achievements. Who gives a shit if people farm on achievement servers. That's just like those ass holes you used to know in grade school who'd use the gameshark and say they did it all themselves.

Does this make any sense to you yet? I mean seriously. This stuff isn't new. It's been around for almost 2 decades! This is just caving into those assholes...

Yeah, I mean it isn't like anybody can see your stats/achievements to see how skilled you are or anything. A little "USERNAME is wielding WEAPON" is a huge indicator of skill. (Except when it isn't.)

"Demonstrating true skill" does not require "using unlocked items"!


Fun fact: the unlock weapons are not upgrades for the original. Saying "He's skilled, he's using (unlock weapon here)!" doesn't mean anything because unlock weapons are not better.

Natasha, for example, is horrible against anything that is actively trying to kill you, while the Minigun is great for doing a lot of damage, reardless of class.

Actually, I like the idea of not basing the unlockables on the current set of achievements.
Achievements have always seemed like a neat way to keep track of the pointless challenges that we've all done far before anybody implemented them. It has always seemed silly to base useful unlockables on how many you've earned, especially when quite a large amount of them are based on unlikely situations rather than skill.
With that said, I'm not entirely too fond of the new system, either. Personally, I think a system at least partially based on the number of points you earn would be far more desirable.

Yeah. I was going to suggest something point-based (like, say, every 20 points is a random item), but the problem with that is people who just go to an instant-respawn server (i.e. achievement boxes) and farm kills.

There's no universal solution, but I do like the points one, since every class should be getting points.

The new system fucking SUCKS

I can understand trying to even it out and avoid achieve grinding servers, but fucking WOW.

So I can play for 3 hours, do absolutely fantastic during that time, and get jack shit


Then jackass mcgregor comes on the server, spectates for ten minutes, and gets the ambassador.

Cool.


Also, a friend of mine was playing earlier, and he killed a dumbass scout who was running directly at him.

The scout obtained an ambassador when he died.

HONESTLY.

Random drops from dead enemies, okay, I can understand that, but COMPLETELY RANDOM INSTANCES?

Bullshit.
