still surprised by how much faster 7zip is at creating zip files compared to windows explorer, it's enough to get me to install it on all the work vms i need that feature in

I think most people use 7-zip these days, I can't really think of the last time I used Explorer's built-in zipper at least. Then again, I haven't really used much Windows in the last year, so...

Wow, the trackpad button on the MacBook is legitimately the worst I've ever used! Less responsive and requires more force that you will never get tactile feedback for than a blister button! I'm legitimately speechless at how they could get the rest of it perfectly decent, and then make the mouse button so genuinely awful that it instantly makes it feel way cheaper than the $1099 it was at retail.
I'm using my iBook G4 right now, and it's nearly flawless in terms of the trackpad and keyboard. How did they mess it up one year to the next? The MacBook keyboard is actually perfectly fine, I even like it, but the mouse button, jeez.

I've never used one from that generation, but I think the build quality of their hardware only started getting *really* good with the aluminum unibody design. The trackpads from that point on have been flawless -- usually praised even by those who are Apple detractors.

The '90s were kinda wild. Not to mention, my '90s electronics all still just work.

Meanwhile, my phone, manufactured sometime in mid 2021, has now decided it's a film student and will only display in black and white. Or, I guess, slightly brown since I have night light on.

After more than a decade of using the same clock I got in college, today I learned that there is a Daylight Savings Time switch on the back that adds/subtracts an hour from the time. I've been doing it manually all these years.

i spilled water on my Thinkpad; thankfully, they're indestructible, so other than the keyboard getting damaged it all is fine. unfortunately the keyboard took a while to get replaced, and it had been a bad timing that added a lot of stress to things.
it also was a custom-modded keyboard by my girlfriend, so i am pretty sad about that.
i took the chance to switch it to a japanese iso layout, unfortunately due to flashing the bios for the mod it isn't quite working properly. special keys are in weird spots, and i can't get the modifier keys (kana, fullwidth, mu/henkan) to work properly and the media keys can't be remapped. oh well.

but other than that i'm very glad thinkpads are indestructible

i feel your pain. i once spilled tea with milk on the Lenovo X1 I was assigned during my internship. I was also mortified until I discovered that it's spill proof. In fact, Lenovo has released this mildly disgusting video advertising the fact.

for my model in particular they had a demo of sorts involving one running under a water faucet

meanwhile my other laptop, an hp pavilion, had the gpu fried not by use, but by a literal extreme heat wave

i always appreciated chonky, resistant technology over performance but more recently is when i've been prioritizing it

Thinking about making my own AMA thread, something I've never done before! Could be fun to have people probe my brain. I might wait a few more days though so it's not a complete flurry of AMA threads.

i've had a pounding headache since yesterday, an incredibly intense and sleep-interfering headache. it's less bad now, but it's still there.

I've always been a decade behind the times at least on that, but that does mean I've been able to get chonky and resistant technology that had the price tag to be performant for its age at launch for far less. For example, this PowerBook G4 I'm using right now was $2,000 at launch and was really powerful -- enough that it's still viable at least for general browsing -- and I bought it for less than $50. And since it's 17 years old, it's had more than enough time for any catastrophic issues to pop up and be fixed by the Virginia Commonwealth University, who was the first owner. It's a little weak for today's 30,000 javascript trackers per website, but I'm interested in trying out MorphOS since it's said to be almost as fast and lightweight as Mac OS 9 but still maintained, with a web browser that has a 2020 version of WebKit preinstalled.
