yeah i've been pronouncing it as /kaj/ this whole time, it just made sense to me

i think the discrepancies arise from j not usually representing [dΚ’] in english in coda positionsβ€”it just isn't very many English words, except in Arabic loanwords like `taj'. i guess i can see why some people would then think it's pronounced /kɑːdΚ’/

so i just end up reading j as some glide, hence something like /kaj/

That's... weird. I wonder why there's such a sharp cutoff. Did you start pronouncing it differently? I'm an idiot with no memory and apparently no ability to put two of my fingers on my trackpad and scroll down.

teaching my friend how torrents work because she wanted a game... now she knows how to not pay for games, and also has been learned on the wonderful work of seeders out there. it's nice

she also learned how to hack her wii this past week, so she's gonna be having a lot of fun for a while!

So good it's nearly unanimous!

I'd like to get into writing short stories. I have a NationStates nation that I wanted to be a short story but it put everyone off, and I lost passion, so I think I'll try to write a short story set in it to see if I can reignite that spark.

i'd like to learn how to write short stories. generally whenever i've tried narrative writing, it's always part of some ridiculously large combined universe that gets progressively harder to organize or convince people to care to understand.

i've found that if i'm less ambitious, my creativity flourishes more...

I went home early because we were literally not doing anything.

Got to work 45 minutes late. Left an hour early. Salaried life.

Best way I've learned is doing and reading a bunch of other people's takes on it. Fanfiction, mostly, though it's been a hot minute since I've read anything like that.

Haha, that's fair enough! It's kinda easy to lapse into that. If you keep yourself to a 100 word drabble, you won't have time to accidentally write a cinematic universe!

making universes like that tends to be a very manic thing for me, which i'd like to avoid going forward.

my webcomic for example takes place in a "cinematic universe" (or paracosm or whatever), but the murderous ambition i had for its story was really self-destructive, and i kinda burned out quick because of it.

i'm thinking that when i return to it, i'll repurpose it as a slice of life comedy comic or something. i mean, it's already just a comedy comic on the surface anyway, given the art style and the dialog. and that's okay. i don't like capitalism, but not everything i create has to be some grand commentary on it. that just sucks me dry.

Yea, gotta say I've been universe crafting a specific one for about ten or twelve years now which was an offshoot of an existing one that was about twenty years old and I'm still asking questions on that. You'll never get any universe 'down pat'. It's always changing, same as your characters. If they're not then they aren't evolving as characters and neither is your writing.

Yeah. I tend to take that approach. Not everything I make has to be a criticism of everything I hate, and that usually works to keep me invested. Sometimes it's okay to just write a story, even if it doesn't have some higher meaning. Most of the stories I write are just "here's a journey that happened to someone," I tend to imagine them in real time as I'm writing, so there's not really much room for social commentary in there. I mean, I could, but it would interrupt my flow. If it happens naturally, it happens naturally, not consciously.
I'd say consider giving writing shallow stuff a shot. It's a perfectly valid form of storytelling, not everything needs to be a critique. And even if you are making a commentary, it doesn't necessarily have to be entirely cynical. There can be good elements in a bad situation, even if they're somewhat rare. The aforementioned NS nation is very much a story about the potential disaster that is finite oil, climate change, civil unrest due to the former two, all that stuff, but I still write it as a living world and people tend to try to make the best of things.

i've mostly only ever written about things that upset me. i could never write something peaceful like moominvalley, since art is pretty much just for outsourcing all my turmoil

sometimes i question it. why am i thinking of a fictional climate disaster in some universe when there's already a real climate disaster looming behind me? eh

For a friend of mine, all she writes is mostly dark content. It's fun trying to bridge that gap on coop. Leads to some interesting, meshed ideas.

I don't write things, but I have some ideas in mind... which mostly involve about a fun video game plot that is "epic", provides an excuse to visit various places while not particularly getting in the way (I guess in a similar style to Sonic 3 & Knuckles?).

The fun challenge is having something that makes sense and is logical while not being just random things happening... actually no, the fun challenge is the game itself.

If I ever make a real game, chances are there'd be no real plot due to the running out or otherwise not being able to decide about the details and just cutting it out before it even gets implemented.
