I've only just seen this hack, and I'm amazed. I'll play it as soon as possible.

It's a great game but you might think about changing the camera angle to the 1st person (Mario's head by the camera) since the hack has the original games camera angles so it means it will be harder to adjust the camera in certain situations.
Sorry if it's allready been said.

Yeah, the camera angles sucked, but then I got used to it. Even before when they were annoying, it didn't make me submit into quiting because it was such a great gameplay. If he ever release's any more hacks we probably won't have to worry about the camera anymore, because he will probably know how to fix it.

I guess this is where I would ask help trying to run this.

When I choose Mario or Luigi and try to start the game I get spammed with "Unable to detect Microcode settings"

I didn't see anything on the site's FAQ on how to fix this...

EDIT: Nevermind using Project 64 1.6 fixed this, I was using 1.7. =/

Not to dampen your enthusiasm, but...

  • Rom hacks are, by definition, not very widely distributed.

  • Even fewer people can properly emulate the N64 than say, the NES or similar.

  • The rom hack does not work properly on all N64 emulators, limiting the audience further.

  • Sites like GameFaqs, especially with their high degree of commercialism, are unlikely to admit anything but officially emulated games that you have to pay for.

  • Even if there is a FAQ for it, it will not become magically popular.

  • If you just needed help for the game, then the rest of this was sort of silly to tack on to it.

  • You could use speaking in proper English as well.

  • Also, whenever people go "I want to do X! Oh, but could someone else do it for me?" It just seems to suggest you want someone to do all the hard work, then to take all the credit for it.

  • Therefore, your post wasn't very useful, and also randomly bumped a thread that didn't need it.

  • Finally, this isn't really a thread to announce leaving/returning in.

So in conclusion, while you mean well, you should think next time before randomly blurting out gibberish like that. :p

There are many walkthroughs on YouTube, just search for "Missing Stars walkthrough". Like Metal_Man said, GameFAQ or similar sites won't accept walkthroughs of hacks.

Anyway, since you bumped it let me post something cool. YouTube user niconicovis has done a very nice TAS (Tool Assisted Speedrun) of this hack. I'm blown away:

Wow, that looks great! It was bound to happen though, with a hack as good as yours . People really seem to like making Super Mario 64 bots.
Also, i posted a couple of OBJ imports i made with your OBJ Importer.

I've successfully downloaded and applied the patch but the game's text is jumbled up, like a simple sentence such as "You've found a star!" would be "Y uve fon a ar!" anyone else know why this has happened or had this problem? Very good game otherwise though, I love that you've put classic Mario music in.

Well, I downloaded it and patched it to a ROM, but I've seen more glitches and mistakes than in v1.0

-- Dialogs are screwed up. Mostly Koopa the Quick's doialogs though.

-- The water tank is open. One of the walls is tilted so you can walk in there.

-- The cave is open. I don't know if this was intended but anyway it's possible to walk outside the walls and view the level from the outside.

Take this as a feedback. If no one else is experiencing any of this I might have made a mistake instead.

This is probably your ROM. I tested it, and none of those things happened to me. There could also have been a error while patching the ROM.

My suggestion would be to try patching your ROM again. If that doesn't work, try another ROM.

The above is the answer.

I remember when you first uploaded screenshots of this hack with yoshi looking like that; I thought he was going to be a prest
Seriously though all the 'background hacks' you created must of made you fustrated, I would get so annoyed if in my hack I had to deal with all the stuff you did in your hack. Well I will allways see myself as a designer as I can certanly not cope with all the more complicated hacking to even think of myself as a hacker.
But you must have been certanly pleased with yourself knowing that you been though hell and back hacking an very glitchy game and come out with a superb hack, and I feel after playing the game that I should thank you for the hard work for both this, the music importer and the obj importer.
Thanks

For this first time ever, I have gotten the SM64 rom extended, and then patched it with this. It was amazing. I loved the day/night idea, along with the final battle. It was a really great 2 1/2 hours of gameplay. In fact, I might just play it again. (exits page and runs PJ64)

If you can't play using Mupen64 on Windows

(The game crashes instantly after booting)

Open the ROM in an hexadecimal editor (or a text editor that preserves the binary data), and find near the beginning of the file:

M64: TheMissingStars

And change the : to any other normal character, like _.

(This happens because file names on Windows can't contain the : character, and Mupen64 crashes when trying to save the EEPROM because of no checks to see if the file can be opened).

Hopefully this can be fixed in a new release. Dunno if it has been already reported.

(I have been able to play using Mupen64 in Windows without doing this, but I don't remember what I did or why it doesn't work for me without this hack now).

Messiaen, According to what I've heard somewhere among the mass changes made in this rom hack, some affect the process of saving data in the game. Wii 64 can fully play the hack but does not have support to save it. Im not completely sure on the details as I'm going just on what I've looked up on it. Is there any way you could modify it or release a version with a saving method that would work for the emulator on the wii?

(This is Wii64 the Emulator for the Nintendo Wii using Homebrew) This isn't the only game with that problem but I'm thinking there might be a way for you to fix it for The Missing Stars specifically.

Also one more thing, Is there no way other than getting game over to exit the game? I think SM64 was like that however with the character change being on the file select screen it makes it impossible to switch characters in a single run without saving lol.

I'll be back 2morrow to fix this post as I'm really tired right now and have a feeling most of the above didn't make much sense...

Also the method to playing it on Wii64 with the ability to use save states.
