My page file usage (aka virtual memory) goes up very slowly over time, and I don't know what's causing it. I rebooted yesterday, which got it down to 400mb, but in the course of a week, it probably will have risen by 200mb. Over the course of 3 hours, it's gained 3 mb. Is there any way to check the page file usage for each process? This is XP, by the way.

Windows will always try to split up memory usage between installed RAM usage and page file. So even if you had like 4 GB of memory installed, it still would use a part of virtual memory, too.
As for the RAM consumption you can always run tools like Process Explorer to see the processes eating up RAM.

wonders why OSX does not come with their version of MSPaint?

outside of the OS itself, firefox and JVM tends to eat up lots of VM. I know firefox runs pretty sluggish once it occupies 200MB.

Opening up Task Manager will tell you what is eating away at any given process in your Virtual Memory/Page File but only if you set it as such. In View, go to Select Columns...

On the second choice in the right column, select Virtual Memory Size and hit OK. Check the TM window again (you may have to resize it length-wise) and you should see VM Size next to Mem Usage.

Right now, on this office comp, AVG takes up 77MB...even more than Firefox does.

I've had those displayed for a long time now, but I don't understand what the "Memory Usage Delta" and "Page File Delta" things are.

So assuming I didn't want my comp to use the slower VM and had enough RAM to do so (though I'm not sure how much that might be...), could I disable it and have everything work fine on RAM-only?

The main thing that I'm getting at is when my computer is in the "I'm not running anything right now" state, the only thing that has a taskbar button is irc. When I check my PF usage, with nothing but IRC open, it'll be bigger, depending on how long the computer has gone without a reboot.

Though, I'm beginning to wonder if it's getting bigger because IRC's buffer is getting bigger over time...

I'll have to look into this. At the moment, it's not causing any problems, but the main thing I'm concerned with is that this would probably require me to reboot my laptop once the maximum VM size has been reached (after Windows increases it 10 times or whatever).

Hiryuu: When I look there, nothing sticks out really far or anything. Unless I'm mistaken, a megabyte is 1024 kilobytes. Most of the stuff listed in that column is a couple of megabytes. Even if I were to add all of those values together, I don't think it would come out to 460MB.

mIRC has a set buffer limit (your milage may vary, check the options).

Over time, Windows will move inactive memory (i.e., memory that is not being used often or at all) into the pagefile to allow more active processes to use it.

Perhaps you should also be checking your overall memory usage.

When I noticed the growing PF, this was around the time emunet went down, and we switched to different servers. As such, new buffers that hadn't gotten to the limit were created. I think the same thing might be going on here, I rebooted yesterday, and since mirc doesn't save the buffers, they've all been cleared out, and are growing until they hit the limit again.

And yeah, I know what the PF itself is. I'll just check up on my memory usage every now and again. There really is a number of things that can cause this phoenomenon.

Some programs actually _will_ require a present page file, otherwise they will not work (properly), also Windows wll warn you every time about this, and that a memory dump will not be possible. You could lower you page file though, as the old rule "page file size = 1,5x RAM" will not play anymore a major role on modern computers. Also setting something past 2 GB of VM might be useless.
I think people with less RAM should use a bigger page file, while those with 1GB and more can work with a smaller amount of virtual memory, but I am not sure about that.

My pagefile is only 256MB, since I set it to never go higher ... it works perfectly, but Windows liked to complain (and resize it) when I had it smaller before (but the minimum for it is 2MB)

To change it:
System Properties -> Advanced -> Performance (Settings) -> Advanced -> Virtual Memory (Modify) -> select partition and size -> Set

Freeing gigabytes of disk space from useless oversized virtual memory is really advanced stuff
