there's a lot of old software out there that serves all sorts of purposes. since many of us use vintage equipment, perhaps it's a good idea to share some things you've found and enjoy using, or even post mini-reviews of stuff you tested out. i know i'm always looking for old software to play around with.

so let's do that in this thread and pool our knowledge together.

⁂ ⁂ ⁂

i spent the afternoon trying to take a self-portrait with an old Logitech webcam (Logitech QuickCam Deluxe for Notebooks) for a magazine feature. i ended up downloading Logitech QuickCam v10.0a to get it running. it had a nice retro interface that was a lot of fun to work with.

the main UI consists of this dock below:

the top icon (with the slide of film and image) brings up a 'photo booth'-like interface with basic 3-second timer features and the option to include time stamps. on higher resolution settings, the images come out strangely compressed—i've been able to get really detailed images out of this webcam in the past using other software, but this is sufficient for my purposes i suppose.

notably, the settings featured options for contrast, brightness, saturation, gain, and exposure.

perhaps it's not that old, but it for those of you playing around with old Logitech webcams, perhaps this is a fun thing to look at.

archive.org - Logitech QuickCam v10.0a

tested on Windows 7 (32-bit) running on a Panasonic Toughbook CF-T8.

I always want to give my computers purposes beyond just gaming, so I'm always looking for stuff like that. The one that immediately comes to mind is an old 68k 3D modelling program with raytracing called Stratavision 3D. I'm terrible at it because I'm so used to Blender, but I gave it a shot and it did come out pretty alright.

Not really intuitive anymore, but I'm sure that it would have been just fine back in 1994 when it released; most 3D modellers were a bit like it at the time. I wanted to try out a whole other host of 3D modelling software like Bryce, but all of it asked for licenses and I didn't have one, nor could I find one.
Also, the theme is called Scherzo and it's for the Kaleidoscope themeing program. There's also one that will make Mac OS 8 and 9 look a bit like System 7.

SharpEnviro is an old Windows desktop I used to use all the time as a kid because it had a Gnome 2ish experience for Windows.

I'd say it's abandonware because despite being free software, if's been discontinued and hasn't seen a release since 2008. Known to work with XP through 7.
It's honestly kind of janky and I knew that even at the time, but I pushed through the occasional frustration and less than occasional glitch because I knew it was a beta (0.8 was its last release) and it otherwise was everything I wanted out of a DE, with themes.
That notepad application doesn't just open Windows Notepad, it opens up a completely new rich text editor that I wrote my very first stories on.
Also, having your hardware monitors up there in the top bar is very nice, if just because it provides some visual feedback that yes, things are happening.
Personally, I feel really nostalgic for it, and that's not actually something I tend to say about things, but I haven't used it in ages and am really giving consideration to installing it on my i5 box running Vista.
They were even kind enough to implement multi-monitor support before quitting.

Yeah, it'd be nice. I hear that there's a version of Blackbox for Windows. I've never used Blackbox even on Linux, but I'm sure it's probably good. http://blackbox4windows.com/

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
