I had 38952 on my board (2001-2004), about 20000 on previous boards combined ... and a bit over 1000 a few times on other/later ones, all long ago now

Of course it was much easier when there was always plenty of things to reply to, and more of a posting mood

last year while i was still using twitter i was making about 1000 tweets a month. i also ran a bot to delete them. not sure how healthy that was but it was still pleasing to watch Number Go Up

These boards still serve an active niche, though.

Forums create a record, an archive we can search through, so that whenever we want to revisit issues, or find help with a problem, or see what was happening during a certain time, we can do that. There’s a paper trail, and while sometimes that leads to embarrassing takes on tv shows and game reveals, other times it’s providing an enormous help with technical issues or parts of a game you’re stuck on.

Discord simply can’t provide that. It’s a river running in real-time, and while it does have search functions, the way the whole app is structured means you’re simply never going to get the same levels of detailed discussion or archived information as we can get from forums. If places want to open a Discord and run that as something else, then cool, but using it as a replacement for forums is a disaster.


Forums are mostly dying, sure, but I think this also opens the way for the remaining forums to become more focused. Talking and reading posts in here feels different than really anywhere else, even other forums. I don't know how to explain it.

yeah yeah! even besides the whole Giant Fucking Mound Of JavaScript thing, forums allow for more thinking before speaking (to a degree). it's kinda part of the culture of it to keep posts longer than a sentence if you can. and you're not seeing whose typing, and it's federated...

i really feel like i'm beating a dead horse here though. it seems like half the discussion that takes place here is the discussion of how different it is to have discussion take place here. it seems really meta. i'm just happy boards still exist though. jul's my favorite

the lack of activity is sad and things were so fast back in the day on forums. but that said there was less of a market penetration of the Internet back then anyway, wasn't there? a lot of us were just nerds on forums, back in the day. the crowd was different.

in some ways, i like the pace of forums nowadays; i liken them to a small quaint seaside town in the winter, one in which you spent many formative memories of your life and childhood. now that summer is long gone… but the memories still remain. it's nice to take a walk in the old town from time to time.

Ill try and stick around a while, seems a nice place to set up base on.
The idea that people are more mature here seems certainly true, though that could just be the fact that the only discord server I actually spend time on was full of closeted kids that, during the pandemic, exploded out into an enencyclopedia of tips and tricks on dress-wearing and a Billy Herrington fan-club. They cannot form articulate scenteces and talk like reddit addicts dialed to 201% with the amounts of lingo and memes they use in a single sentence.
Meanwhile forumboards are a place for more complex discussion with the open conversation email-esque format that twitter's wordcapped system cannot scratch withought breaking Godwin's Law
