how do you personally define a sandwhich (and of course please argue about this with everyone else)

personally i think its a non-bread filling surounded by bread on more then one side with one or more sides exposed to the air

A sandwich to me is a dish made out of any bread with any topping.

Most english speakers I talk to don't like this definition, but the modern one in popular use basically just cut out a bunch of bread dishes for no reason.

A sandwich is two (or more?) pieces of bread with some kind of filling between them. Open face sandwiches are the Spiders Georg of sandwiches and should not be counted.

There is a reason: those bread dishes already have different names, but the only name for two-slices-of-bread-with-filling is "sandwich".

I think it should be perfectly acceptable to make exceptions like "hot dogs aren't sandwiches", while keeping a solid definition of bread on 2-3 sides with a filling in the middle. We already do this kind of thing with pizza anyway, which is just a whole other can of worms.

I disagree with this notion personally. Sandwich is the best word we have for globally talking about bread dishes in English, because no other one is in use. The entire thing is absurd to me, because in Swedish we do have a word that is used like that properly.


Is like, you have the word Pie to describe pie dishes, and then specific names for specific pie dishes. There is no taxonomically encompassing word for bread dishes other than sandwich in English as far as I'm aware, so until the time comes where one is discovered or made up, I will keep using it broadly. So yes, to me a buttered slice of toast is a sandwich, a flat bread rolled up and filled with salad is a sandwich.

y'know, i've always been on the fence about this, but tonight I came up with a counter-argument. consider the following:

going off the agreed definition of a sandwich (something with a filling and 2-3 sides with bread), then a hot dog cannot possibly be a sandwich for the simple fact that it has infinite sides! unlike a sandwich, the hot dog is engulfed by the bread, as opposed to being, well, sandwiched between it. if you suspended the meat of the hot dog in mid-air, then you could rotate the bun 360 degrees around it, but this same thing doesn't apply to a regular sandwich. personally, I think it's unfair to make an exception for a hot dog, and I think it's okay if it's just its own thing.

I can honestly say I've never felt the need to talk about bread-based dishes in general. Maybe there's no such word in English because the topic doesn't come up often in English-speaking regions. (Or maybe the topic doesn't come up because there's no word for it?)

Going by your pie example, it's like using the word "pizza" to talk about all types of pie.

It's a worthy consideration to make. Bread based dishes do predate the modern Sandwich by a pretty huge margin. So it could also be that there was a word for it, but it has fallen out of use. But given that such a word exists in other languages it makes for interesting online discourse.

The want of a hot dog, like any other sandwich, is what Marcuse would call a "false" need, conditioned in us by economic and cultural forces that serve the politically dominant class structure:

"False" are those [needs] which are superimposed upon the individual by particular social interests in his repression: the needs which perpetuate toil, aggressiveness, misery, and injustice.
