Probably time to make a thread about this proper, since it's only going to be a matter of time before the operating system launches here in about a month. I've been on the pre-release/preview copy now since it was leaked to the public and, for the most part, it's been all right and there's been quite a few things it's fixed as time goes on. There's a lot of things like Android support that will not be available at launch though and there's a few features that are coming to W10 that were supposed to be exclusive to W11 with the 21H2 release around this time.

I'm not entirely certain who this really caters to, that said. I don't think early adopters of W11 are really going to get all that much from the experience right now. I put it on my main just to see what I'm going to be up against come release and to see what all is going to happen with new computers and I will be seeing how machines react to it from a complete wipe and reload once it releases (especially older systems) since I want to get acclimated to what MS is about to throw at us - both professionally and otherwise. I think, for the most part, it'll do the job but I don't really see why we need it right now nor did we ever. I really take W11 so far as a response to Apple learning to count past 10 themselves with Big Sur and so on.

I also want to point out that, along with the interesting requirements this time around, it may not be possible to have the home copies work without a Microsoft account this time around. You'll be able to work around it with Pro, but not Home. Still not clear if there's a workaround to this or if MS really wants to shoot themselves in the foot on this one. Though, according to XDA and my own tests with the Pro copy, that might not be entirely true... I just don't know if this will be on the release version or not.

Since my previous SSD died, I had to allocate some space on the HDD to manage some files temporarily which meant I wiped Windows 10 off of the hard drive, and now that I've moved Linux to my new Samsung SSD, there's about 130GB of space that are currently not allocated. And since Windows 11 is just around the corner I decided I might as well wait and install it instead of Windows 10.

The TPM2.0 and SecureBoot requirements can already be overridden by editing the registry or messing with the installation files, so I'm not worried about compatibility all things considered. Might even use a Windows 10 Education key for that, since I have a spare one from college that I haven't used yet. It's funny though, that my motherboard does support both SecureBoot and TPM2.0 but enabling SecureBoot makes Linux not boot up, and enabling TPM2.0 makes Linux give me warnings about my TPM module having security flaws. I looked up online and it seems like the recommended course of action is to disable it.

The Microsoft account requirement for the Home edition sucks but that's the direction they're going for now so, not much that we can do about it.

Well, I'm pretty sure the PCs I'd use it on all meet the hardware requirements, so at least I don't have to worry about what I'll do when Microsoft drops support for Windows 10. I don't think there are any compelling reasons to upgrade, though.

Enabling secure boot may involve some extra steps if you're not already using a signed bootloader and kernel. It will involve a lot of extra steps if you're using the CSM.

If you're not using the TPM to secure anything, you can ignore the warnings. There might be a firmware update that will make the warnings go away.

Yea I've got Fedora running on an Acer that supports only UEFI/Secure and that is something that's possible but you definitely want to set it up as such out of the gate instead of after the fact.

I'm already using the latest firmware version, so there's nothing I can do about that unfortunately. I just leave it disabled.

Fedora already has a tool to manage SecureBoot I believe. Linux Mint usually just recommends to leave it disabled, and I honestly cannot be bothered to mess with signing my own keys or dealing with SecureBoot in any way shape or form. As long as motherboards don't require me to use SecureBoot, that's fine by me. I do use UEFI mode though, not Legacy/BIOS.

Already getting the usual ugly launch stories of interesting origin.

Like non-ASCII text being in the registry will break it.

That non-ASCII thing is a huge yikes.

So uh, update since last time. I've installed Windows 11 on my computer on a new cheap SSD drive that I plan on using every once in never, and in order to get the installation going I've had to open the registry and edit a bunch of keys to disable the CPU, SecureBoot and TPM checks. And honestly? It installed and ran just fine. Aside from some graphical oddities/glitches here and there, Windows 11 doesn't seem that bad IMO, but I've also barely used it. It's honestly extremely similar to Windows 10 except with more cool features (copy as path, Windows Terminal, etc.) a more pleasant interface which actually has colors again.

In other news, I've discovered that recent versions of Linux Mint do actually come with SecureBoot support straight from the box, and since my installation was done on UEFI mode then I simply had to add grubx64.efi to the list of Secure Boot keys just like that. I honestly thought my Linux Mint installation was still running on CSM mode, whoops! With that, I took my computer off of "UEFI with CSM" mode and enabled SecureBoot and TPM 2.0 for real.

Now, going back to Windows 11 with all of that enabled, I can see that my PC actually supports almost all the "minimum" requirements except for being a supported CPU. I was wondering, well why do I need a supported CPU if all the safety features that Microsoft has put into Windows 11 don't need it? Well, turns out, they're trying something called HVCI or Memory Integrity (which is also present in Windows 10 for the computers that support it) which seems to be the problem child:

Windows 11 (and also Windows 10!) uses virtualization-based security, or VBS, to isolate parts of system memory from the rest of the system. VBS includes an optional feature called "memory integrity." That's the more user-friendly name for something called Hypervisor-protected code integrity, or HVCI. HVCI can be enabled on any Windows 10 PC that doesn't have driver incompatibility issues, but older computers will incur a significant performance penalty because their processors don't support mode-based execution control, or MBEC.

And that acronym seems to be at the root of Windows 11's CPU support list. If it supports MBEC, generally, it's in. If it doesn't, it's out. MBEC support is only included in relatively new processors, starting with the Kaby Lake and Skylake-X architectures on Intel's side, and the Zen 2 architecture on AMD's side—this matches pretty closely, albeit not exactly, with the Windows 11 processor support lists.

Even a video Microsoft posted in one of their channels clarifies what's going on with these requirements. My CPU is an Intel Core i5-6600, which puts it exactly one generation behind support for MBEC, but two generations behind Microsoft's offical "support list".

Even so, there's a few reports that even with CPUs that support MBEC, Windows 11 still carries a noticeable performance penalty compared to Windows 10. I just wonder if they're gonna make any benchmarks with CPUs that don't support MBEC so that they can measure how important having a supported CPU really is, that'd be neat to see.

Posting this from Windows 11.

EDIT: "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/94.0.4606.81 Safari/537.36 Edg/94.0.992.50" BRUH they didnt even bother changing the nt version it's literally just 10

Apparently, AMD's issues (Ryzen processors) on a Windows-based OS (mostly around the terrible scheduler) are even worse on W11 if you install things by default. You might really consider installing AMD's chipset drivers exclusively from their site to mitigate this issue, which they thankfully got official support for here about a month ago.

I did similar in W10 once I upgraded to Ryzen due to issues there and it did seem to help out quite a bit. Prior to this, I was running into BT issues every 30 minutes, probably due to idling failures, and I haven't had the issues since (knock on wood). Overall performance seemed better as well.

I think it's more of what I was saying much earlier - it was rushed to market to compete with Apple being able to count again. They'll almost certainly want people on 11 but not until, like, 3-5 years from now. People that buy a new computer now or willingly upgrade to it are basically going to be the beta testers and people that complain to MS about shit.

8 and 10, in that respect, weren't any different.

Also, interesting and of note:

Got the PSP to work with W11. Evidently, someone took the time to get proper drivers working for it over the last year with W10/11 and I had no idea. I figured it would be locked away to W7 forever but apparently that's no longer true.

Worth note that they neutered Backup.

If you look for it in Windows, you only get things that point to OneDrive.

Even the File History has been mostly neutered. It will only back up the profile folders. Nothing else. So if you really want to use that to backup you will have to copy folders to your profile because it will not be configurable otherwise. That's a downgrade from -Windows 8-.

They're really pushing this cloud backup bullshit when this state's (Arkansas) total downstream average might be around 10Mbit at best. Godforbid they remove local backup entirely in a release down the road.

i've found that StartAllBack is a godsend for making 11 function more like the past 25 years of windows, at least in terms of the shell anyway. it is a one-time payment of $5 after 30 days, though, but the trial seems easy to reset

i'll likely be sticking with windows 10 until 2025 or later since i figure 11 will be more stable by then, but i don't plan on using LTSC since i actually use the microsoft store

Oh my god really?? I used to use File History to back up files on my PC (thankfully I've switched away since though), and I had manually added a lot of folders to it so that it would actually be useful

Oh this seems pretty handy, thanks for linking it! If I'm ever forced to use 11, this will be very useful to make it actually feel usable again

Not that I plan on switching any time soon though, I even specifically have the TPM turned off in my PC so that I'm unable to upgrade to it lmao, I also probably won't use LTSC myself, not because of the Microsoft Store but because driver support is overall worse

Though honestly, I think I'd sooner make the full switch to Linux than upgrade to Windows 11 hehe,

If you know how to use a computer, you can use Mint or MX Linux.

If you're like most of the population, however, that's going to be a hard sell. I was sort of able to convince some people in my profession to use Mint with the Cinnamon DE a long time ago when they had to jump away from XP for lack of support and only needed a computer to do the basics but the reality is if it ever went sideways and required administrating then you would be looking at a tall task for any user if not from the sheer complexity in comparison to Windows then the lack of documentation.

Though I will say MX has a LOT of the latter, even so far as to come with a manual on the Desktop, which you never see. They really are making better strides in that respect, as time goes on, to be more user-friendly but I sincerely doubt it will ever eclipse MS or Apple in their respective operating systems.

Honestly (though I might be biased because I'm an Arch user hehe), at this point I feel like Windows is the more of a pain in the ass to troubleshoot and fix than Linux if anything goes wrong, which seems a lot more common these days than it did back in the Win7 era or so, Windows has more GUIs for administration but not only are these often very confusing especially because of their age compared to the rest of the system, but it's also not that much better if you need an in-depth guide to fix a problem anyway, which is also annoying on Windows because you often don't even know what to look up (at least on Linux there's usually helpful error messages to look up)

Ironically, I feel like a decent simple distro like Mint is better for your average computer-illiterate user than Windows is at this point, like it's much more suited as a "grandma" OS for the people who just need to browse the web and maybe do basic office tasks, which seems supported by some anecdotes I've seen from people who installed it on their parent's/grandparent's PC and had it work better. It also helps that it runs a lot better, which often saves people from what would otherwise be a required hardware upgrade when their PCs get slow

I don't know much about the needs of businesses when it comes to PCs, but for your average person's home PC, I think Linux has become a very viable option, especially because there often isn't any hassle with installing drivers, since you still have to do that manually on a fresh Windows install (because Windows Update usually hurts more than helps when it comes to auto-installing drivers from what I can tell)

Windows has gotten really crappy and unreliable in recent years, especially thanks to Win10 moving to a Software as a Service model and gutting the QA team in favor of volunteer "Insiders", I feel like its issues are a big reason why stuff like Chrome OS has been overshadowing it in so many spaces lately, because most people just want an OS that "just works"

If I didn't work break-fix where 80-90% of my clientele weren't individuals and haven't done that for more than a decade I would probably believe you.

But normal humans are so incredibly stubborn. They do not want change. For every one person that you can find that has an open mind about alternative operating systems, another thousand will launch at you for even suggesting such a thing. They will automatically shut out anything that could give them an advantage when it comes to convenience due to habit and not wanting to screw something up.

Ironically, this means that when Windows 11 is effectively the one thing they'll have to move to, most will and they will complain about it and learn as best they can but there are still those I see who bring me Windows 7 and Windows XP machines (this past year, even) with the intent that I must fix those machines so that they don't have to use modern OSes. They're very set it what works and they refuse anything else.

And don't get me started on Apple users that jumped from the Windows base. They're even worse, in general, when it comes to that discourse because not only did they have problems with Windows but they're also having problems with Apple as well which you would think would be -the- dichotomy of OSes on the main market only to see that these people are unhappy with OSes in general because they literally don't understand them period and it bleeds into their attitude when they go to drop a machine off that isn't working in one way or another - mostly bit by more cost on an already overly-expensive machine, by comparison to Windows-based ones.

I don't think you'll be able to save that, in the long run, due to said stubborness and I think Apple and Microsoft understand that...but not so much for general use individuals than the world conglomerate in general. You have way, way, way too many people using MS's OS in comparison and I doubt that will ever change unless something earth-shattering happens in the world of operating system between now and whenever and I don't think Linux is going to be the one that does it.

What I will say is that as a mostly-casual user on a new 2-in-1 convertible laptop, Windows 11 has been entirely fine, if not downright pleasant. Sure, the start menu and the taskbar aren't as customizable as I'd like, but that's really my only complaint. It just feels like a much more polished version of Windows 10.

But also I imagine that when you get further away from the ideal target of a brand new laptop/tablet, Windows 11 starts to suck a bit more. But as far as being able to program or make art or whatever on this, it's fine. I honestly think I prefer it over 10, even. And certainly I prefer it over Linux. I tried that a few times and I really just don't have the patience for it anymore.

it's honestly a really pretty OS. of course it's still got loads of visual inconsistencies but the things they actually have reskinned do look really pretty (even if that means that weird laggy context menu that i hope they'll fix soon). and like i said, startallback and start11 exist.

other than the new theme, i can't name any of the new features off of the top of my head. it really feels like a reskin of 10 with expensive system requirements. maybe it'll evolve to be more than that? i mean, i remember when windows 10 came out i said that it just seemed like windows 8.2. then it became much more.

my biggest issue with it though is the system requirements thing. why for any reason other than profit would they force obsolescence on computers not even five years old?

Been messing around with Win11 in a VM so that I could try out StartAllBack, it really does make such a huge difference, I can actually sort of tolerate using it now Honestly, with how it brings back the Win7 start menu and Explorer command bar, I think it's making me enjoy the UI more than 10's

I do appreciate the new consistency to the UI, it's something that Windows 10 has gotten really bad at, especially with all of its years of updates... there's still plenty of things I hate about it, but having StartAllBack is making me wonder if I really should upgrade after all

...Though honestly, if I do, I'm tempted to try a fresh install? I really don't want to go through that process, but it's been so long since I last installed Windows that there's so much crap I'd like to wipe away by starting fresh, one of the most major things being how my user folder still uses my deadname and can't be changed... I wish it was as easy as on Linux though, on there you can just move your entire home folder over to a clean install and get back a large chunk of your configs and data, but it's much more of a pain on Windows, especially because of the Registry

Though at the same time, I kinda feel like, if I'm doing a fresh install anyway, I should just use that as an excuse to switch my main PC to Linux? But since it's my only PC running (current) Windows anymore, I do kinda need to keep it on there for various apps and games that don't run in Wine/Proton or are just too inconvenient in there, and dual-booting is a tricky situation that I'm unsure if I have the space for unless I pick up yet another SSD (not to mention how much Windows likes to screw with dual-boot setups after updates)

I'm still really not a fan of how Windows is basically spyware at this point though, and I don't currently know what tools are best for reducing that on Win11, so I won't upgrade in general until I can figure that out anyway

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
