In six states so far and only a certain selection by Dell and some other brands as well but, basically, California's Energy Bill is at the center of it all.



Not that a GTX 1650 is more than a lightbulb's worth of energy anyways but you know...being a gamer is bad for the economy and energy grid or whatever.

"While some had worried about the bill being an issue for game development studios and AI researchers, this regulation only seems to affect personal computers. Servers, workstations, and the aforementioned gaming consoles seem to be unaffected."

So yea.

isn't the title of this thread a bit reductive and sensationalist? Dell deciding not to sell a selection of their PCs to certain markets due to regulations in one state (i'd assume the suppliers are probably grouped together into one team, and that team includes California, so it's easier to just not sell in nearby states either) is not really the same as Gaming PCs becoming literally illegal in the US. i posted this from a Gaming PC and Joe Biden hasn't come to arrest me yet or whatever

Doesn't exactly excuse the snide remarks but I'll take the L.

Long and the short of it is it's stupid anyways - these are hands off but the sale of workstations and servers are still fine. That was the whole point I was trying to make.

To me it feels like a knee-jerk reaction to crypto and the graphics cards that are in there.

here's an article from vice, with some actual details instead of a shoddily written fart:

Dell Can't Sell This Gaming PC in California Because It Uses Too Much Power
"This was driven by the California Energy Commission (CEC) Tier 2 implementation that defined a mandatory energy efficiency standard for PCs – including desktops, AIOs and mobile gaming systems,” Dell told Motherboard in an email. “This was put into effect on July 1, 2021. Select configurations of the Alienware Aurora R10 and R12 were the only impacted systems across Dell and Alienware."

The California restrictions are complicated and specific, but most gaming machines manufactured between January 1, 2019 and July 1,2021 can use no more than 50, 80, or 100 kWH a year. Anything made after July 1 will be further restricted to 50, 60, or 70 kWH a year.

“To be sold or offered for sale in California manufacturers must test products at a CEC-approved laboratory and receive third-party certification,” the CEC told Motherboard in an email. “Once certified, manufacturers are required to submit their documentation and data to the CEC to be uploaded into the agency's online [database].”

According to Dell’s spec sheet, the Alienware rigs consume 63 kWH a year when they’re idle and 563 kWH a year when the CPU is stressed.


the article isn't much clearer itself, but it seems alienware is already pretty close to getting it under the mark. maybe they could try turning off the dumb leds

i mean, on its face, i agree that this is pretty dumb. i'm not sure exactly what the law says or just how egregious alienware's hardware is (probably very given its Gamer Tech™!) but i imagine this is the kind of thing that will be ironed out given how many large computer companies happen to reside in these states


a better idea would be focusing on the actual power draw from households or adding pricing tiers or the like, but california isn't really known for its good lawmaking

apparently there's similar regulations being implemented in BC but the kicker is that they primarily affect "gaming machines" in the sense of "gaming commission" aka gambling, so having not actually read the specific regulatory document for California et al I'm not sure if that's the case there as well but chances are A) it might well be and Epic Gamers are overreacting to a giant nothingburger as they tend to do and/or B) as is the standard for America some gigacorporation's legal team will eventually be able to finagle a bunch of specific words in specific contexts to bypass it.

See and what I don't get is I was looking at the specs in that one on the far left and there's no way it could be pulling that kind of juice. Even if you were to take in idle considerations, that GTX 1650 Super is 100W average (6W idle, looked this up), you've got a drive (regular 1TB) that can't pull more than maybe 25W, assuming 12V 2A or less, and a processor/mobo package that has to be under 100W or so itself since it's an i5.

Unless there's a thermonuclear generator in that thing, I'm at a loss on how the heck that's a block burner of energy. It just feels bizarre to me to target certain computers like this.

I mean I've even taken a few Alienware apart that are much bigger in design than this one, even some of those Area 51 machines that they've sold and it just feels strange to me that this is an issue based on something they came up with in 2018 in California. Three years ago.

And why not custom builds either is what I don't get. You could potentially make something way more wasteful than anything Alienware makes, especially since most OC the crap out of their rigs anymore.

I mean even if it WAS that, and I've seen my fair share of tacky, those LEDs aren't putting out that much juice OR heat.

I'd just REALLY like to here the full breakdown of how a system sporting a 1650 Super, the rough equivalent of a lightbulb output, is so horrifically bad. I think it'd just be an interesting, curious read.
