I know there's half life, quake, doom, skyrim and so on.

But what are some less known games you know about that lets you edit and change things with ease, with significant impact to the game? Any mods of your own?

Into the Breach, an indie tactical game from 2018 has a surprisingly robust modding scene.

The modding is all done in exposed LUA, essentially (it's pretty straightforward!) - you can find mods for the game on the official forums and discord.

I've made a couple of publicly released mods for it myself: Gravity Bombers Squad and Riptide Squad.

Ahhh I liked ITB a lot. At first I was a little disappointed it wasn't just an AW clone but I really enjoyed my time with it.

Maybe one day I'll feel like going back to the game and try some mods. I got a little burned out from playing it every morning for like a month straight.

The pixel art for your mods looks rly nice. Fits right in. And so does the mechanics I think.

Now I know QUAKE is pretty well known for it's modding but there's a huge modern community, smaller than DOOM's but it's still good. There's a new wave of tools and tutorials that are making modding/mapping for it effortless.

Yes I know not exactly the scope of this thread but even if QUAKE is the home of modding as we know it today, I think Bethesda games, Doom, Garrys Mod, Starbound and Minecraft is what people think of when it comes to moddable games today, but there's a lot of new interesting stuff in the quake community worth checking out that people might've missed.

My first finished game mod was on SimCity 4 when I was like... 15 I think, if you're into that kind of game. It was a bunch of nuclear power plants, specifically a series of progressively higher output LFTRs, starting from MSRE and going up to 4GWe, with all the plants up to 1GWe being real proprosed (and sometimes built) designs. It never got released but I still have the files.

I don't know if romhacking counts, but Kirby 64 got a level editor quite recently and only one hack has been released so far, which was made by the tool's creator.

Cities: Skylines is a very good city simulator with built-in mod support. However you do have to write the mods in C#, so it's not the most beginner friendly.

If you know your way around PowerPC assembly, you could check out my Star Fox Adventures mods. I've made a nice build system that injects C code into the game, and the engine is very versatile, so there's a ton of potential. More reverse engineering is needed to really take advantage of it, though.

You could also get an emulator with Lua support and mod old console games. That's always fun. Again, requires some technical know-how, but not as much as you might think.

SRB2K, which is a mod of a mod of DOOM. Huge community, lots of mods, easy enough to add to it as well with the proper tools.

Setting up private servers isn't as much of a breeze but it's doable.

I guess Speedy Eggbert (2) counts in the list, if only because you can easily edit every level in the game, the recorded demos, graphics and sound.

Eventually they're releasing the source code for this game too, which should have already happened in 2019 but it isn't ready yet.

Considering the rest of this thread I'm guessing it's not what you're thinking of, but 2001's Combat is pretty easy to poke in and seems to have been set up to allow modding.
