ever randomly think about early webcomics, even if they haven't updated in a long time or probably haven't aged well?

recently i remembered user friendly (ran from 1997-2009 and has just been showing reruns since), and it seems surprisingly decent despite the lazy art style and nag strips. also serves as a good way to check my internet since the pages are so lightweight by today's standards

Just yesterday I was thinking about Keenspot, which looks like it's still going, although in a much smaller capacity than it was back in the day. I remember a time when there were tons of web comics top lists and they were all flooded with keenspace comics.

I used to be a huge webcomic junkie, I think peaking with like thirty or so that I read regularly in 2006. Planet Zebeth was one of the first web comics I read, and it looks like it's in the middle of a kind of resurgence? That's pretty cool.

I think about them a lot. Aside from Bob and George & Planet Zebeth, here are a few that come to mind:

  • 8-Bit Theater: 2001 - 2010. Aged like fine milk.

  • Kid Radd: 2002 - 2004. Still a personal favorite.

  • Super Mega: 2004 - Ongoing? Still updates very rarely. A work of art.

Bob and George... Now there's a name I've not heard in some time.

I was never a fan, my introduction to B&G was all the knock-off comics that were terrible, so by the time I saw it, I just had a bad taste in my mouth for that type of thing.

bob and george was the first sprite comic i ever saw, and it seemed to be novel and to really have fun playing with the concept. lots of mixed media play, with the original story and fanfiction intersecting...

well. conceptually it's really neat, anyways... i read it a little bit a few days ago, and i'm not too sure how well the writing holds up...

One of the comics that inspired me was Cuteness2 + Evilness3 = Kirby. It also had a silly spin-off called Multi Pong Reply. It's been forever since I've read them, so I have no idea if they still hold up, but I still enjoyed them regardless.

I also loved Planet Zebeth, and it was the big reason I love NES Metroid. Fun Fact: a rogue ad on the site was responsible for giving both my computer and my laptop a devastating virus that nearly destroyed all of my stuff.

The big one that comes to mind for me is MegaToyko. First read it in the early 2000s ('03-ish I guess?), followed it for some years but dropped out eventually, then re-read it 5 years ago, maybe a bit longer, and honestly still liked it? Not "everyone should read this!" amazing, but not complete and utter garbage, either. Just a decent webcomic that sometimes hits and sometimes misses with its content, themes and jokes and whatnot. Still appears to get irregular updates too, like a page a month, maybe more. Maybe I'll re-read it again if I feel like it...

Besides MegaTokyo, I used to read Mac Hall and Real Life Comics a lot when I started in college in 2004. It looks like both are still active today -- the Mac Hall team started a new comic called Three Panel Soul, and Real Life Comics came back from a year-long hiatus with an ongoing arc about the author coming out as trans.

I also read Captain SNES, a sprite comic sequel to the Captain N cartoon with the same kind of edgy humor one should expect from a sprite comic.
Unfortunately, updates have slowed from three comics a week to three comics a year.

I don't think so, you may be thinking of Tyson Hesse/Rittz/Mechanical Penguin of Sonic ARGH/Boxer Hockey? They were on FB20XL for a long while. They got involved at Archie, then with Sega on some animated shorts, did the Mania intro, and eventually helped save the Sonic movie. I'm not familiar with anyone else from that community making it big.

Psyguy actually went on to be a big piece of garbage after some drama revealed how he treated friends/women during those years. I forget the specifics but I know that Lashiec was involved. They've multiple times abandoned their previous identities and are now fostering a community for their Let's Play streams under the name Brinnstar. I check in every so often on that and their Discord and on the surface he seems to be a better person that is mindful of what they say/do.
