apparently the riaa got youtube-dl taken off github

at least for now you can still download it here and i'd recommend keeping it locally if you ever want to use it

i've actually been using a super sketchy program called JDownloader

this seems more convenient, and i ironically might switch to it now that i've heard about it and knowing it's still up some places, but it's nice to know that other alternatives exist

but, wow. what the fuck? what grounds does the RIAA even have to DMCA that shit? like, legally? it's not their copyrighted content, it's just a tool that's used to download other things. the RIAA can fuck off with their overreaching, fascist-corporatist bullshit.

corporations will continue to slowly destroy legal norms in order to preserve profit -- they'll keep pushing boundaries and taking new and ever more destructive steps -- now and forever, unless those corporations are destroyed. that's the way i see it.

somewhat related, a certain program called aTube Catcher seems to be popular around here for downloading YouTube videos, at least among LAN Houses (yes they are still a thing, particularly in rural towns where internet access can be a bit ugh).

technically, right-click save violates the same DMCA laws that youtube-dl did, so they'd have grounds to shut that shit down entirely if they wanted to
