I found this:

http://www.symbos.de/

It runs on a z80, so that's pretty good. It has IRC and WGet if you can get networking going on your machine, which requires some sort of addon board probably more powerful than the z80 itself, but I love the website/UI design of this. And it's multitasking on a friggin z80... and it made me wonder, what kind of hardware could you feasibly get web browsing on while keeping the costs and complexity as low as possible?

Wait, holy shit, SymbOS has networking support and applications to take advantage of it now? Damn. (I wonder if WinAPE supports the proper expansions...)

I had so much fun messing with SymbOS back in the day - I even remember dithering down some images to use as desktop wallpaper on it, which ended up evolving into my own style down the line.

As far as cheap machines to use for web browsing? A lot of SBCs these days are perfectly capable as lightweight internet machines - the 1GB Raspberry Pi 4 is $35 and its performance is honestly enough to the point where I don't feel very constrained on one anymore.
The Zero W is even cheaper at $10, though we're starting to teeter on the edge of unusability for the modern web here. (Then again, if we're talking about SymbOS on a Z80, this would even be leagues faster...)
Of course, none of these factor in power, storage, or cases, but it's nuts to think about just how much power can be packed into such a small package for so cheap anymore.

SymbOS looks really sexy every time I check it out. I gotta give it a spin some day.

I think when considering the cheapest system with a usable web browser, one has to remember that you need some input and output, typically a keyboard and a screen... Raspberry Pis may be pretty cheap, but you need to add the cost of a monitor.

In my experience the cheapest system people get are hand-me-down laptops, typically a gen or two behind, so feeling slow, but still perfectly usable.

If we're talking about buying a brand new system, I would probably suggest getting a cheap android phone? Although from what I can see, it's harder to go under $150 with those than I expected... so I guess you were right about the Pi, you can get old second hand LCD screens for $15 or so, plus $4 for a keyboard.

Yeah. I just was surprised you could even do this on a single Z80. It's an extremely small amount of complexity, especially compared to modern hardware. Sure there's additional chips and stuff on the board of a MSX, but the Z80 seems to be the most complex of all, so making something like a MSX must be extremely cheap this day and age.

But it's very much true people are literally giving away hardware many times stronger than a z80. Like even a relatively ancient core2duo laptop could feasibly browse the web today. Maybe spoof the user agent as mobile for a lighter web, but it can do it.

idk maybe I've just snowed in a little bit too much onto retrocomputing where every ounce of silicon counts, vs today where we have ridiculous overhead.

I guess it's a matter of expectations. Most people already have a TV, and a keyboard and mouse can be had for ~$10.

If you don't have a TV, probably your best bet is an old hand me down smartphone. Which is probably why people in most emerging nations use smart phones as their only computer. Used laptops are probably cheaper if you're in the right area (North America/Western Europe) but anywhere else, they're more rare.

I don't think it has internet capability, but talking about OSes on z80s got me thinking about CollapseOS, which is kind of an interesting topic in its own right.

From a software perspective, you know have BearSSL, which is a lightweight SSL library that could feasibly run on some very low-end hardware (talking like 128KB RAM systems). If someone used this to make web browsers for some old platforms like MS-DOS or the Macintosh, they could reasonably be used. Kinda.

Much better also would be to ditch the web entirely for these systems and use a lighter protocol such as Gemini instead. Because the modern internet with it's javascripts and html5 nonsense isn't running on old hardware any time soon. Or heck, we could revive WML again. Either or.

I'll use Gemini as soon as I don't need a new browser to do it. When it gets into lynx or Firefox I'll consider it.

Equipment:

Personally, I think that the best possible thing for retro-online-computing would be if someone took one of these "Wi-Fi modems" for computers like the C64 and, in addition to that, stuck a 65816 running at a high frequency or another more powerful version of a retro-processor. Then that processor could be realistically tasked to do encryption, and it wouldn't go too far from what people actually did with C64s (SuperCPU comes to mind).

Yeah I fucked around on gemini last week and it's a nice experience, the one thing I didn't like was that the most convenient to use browser didn't resize images. Ahh... but it was otherwise good.

There was some pages that were replies to blog posts. They felt chaotic and hard to follow. Maybe it's more palatable to pro gopher users but to me it felt like, man, mailing lists! Those seem a lot better!

Yeah that sounds good. Some kind of generic little device with a ethernet jack (or even serial?) that can be be customized to plug into various retro computers that is just strong enough to do SSL/HTML transcribing and so on...

Funny to think that the Raspberry Pi 400 has come out since my last post, which takes care of everything but the display. (Kinda like old 8 and 16 bit machines, in that respect, not to mention it's all in the keyboard...)

If you have power, storage, a MicroHDMI cable, and a mouse, then the unit is $70, but for $30 more you'd get all those things... generally a better deal, even if just because powering one of the things can be kinda finicky sometimes.

At $70-100, you could spend marginally more on a far more powerful machine, even if usually secondhand - though going for lower price points, bang for the buck isn't exactly always on the table.

I bought my 2005 Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop for $25 on eBay, free shipping. It doesn't like Puppy Linux all that much and ends up locking up when doing more than one thing at a time on PL, but Haiku runs... relatively great, and supports fairly modern web browsers, Otter specifically being the one I'm currently using. A little buggy and has no drivers for any hardware newer than ca. 2000, but it's still in Beta 2, they have time. ReactOS just can't handle the laptop's hardware at all, and is nearly unusable for any actual work. XP/2000 run perfectly, it was designed with them in mind, but XP/2000 don't really have many new web browsers coming out for them besides maybe New Moon.

For fun, I ran NT 3.51 on it with no trouble at all, and it even had decent performance. I didn't expect that for such new hardware, but I suppose it wasn't yet worlds away from the mid-1990s hardware that it was designed for.

Really depends on what parts of the web you want to browse. A PSP or Wii can do it, but you won't be able to use a lot of modern sites, both because they're stupid bloated JavaScript monstrosities and because they use tech that just didn't exist back then.

I mentioned this in another thread but Mypal has really gotten me out of binds with older systems that I keep seeing where people either really want XP to run for one reason or another or refuse outright. Believe it's based off Firefox 3 and the design sure shows it but it runs fairly well, even on an Atom-based netbook (with realistic limitations). Enough to run YT at 360p without it stuttering all over the place, at least.

I recently grabbed a cheap 2010 netbook off eBay and have been seeing what kinds of sites I can run in modern Firefox on a mostly barebones Arch Linux+LXDE installation, it works rather well for light sites, though anything modern and bloated will slow the entire thing down, with Discord basically freezing up the entire thing (thank god for native third-party apps like Ripcord though, Ripcord runs great)

I really like using the thing though, it's nice to see it breeze through sites like this one, though it's unfortunately mainly a novelty since a 2010 Atom CPU really is that bad for modern tasks

Here's a pic of the thing (also pictured: my main laptop under it):

I bought a Power Mac G4 (AGP) 450MHz for $36 and it's handled just about all the sites I've thrown at it with grace. Maybe not as quickly as a Chromebook, but Chromebooks can cost ten times the price I paid, for certainly less than ten times the functionality; I have access to every program written for any version of Mac OS between System 7.1 and 10.4.11, and the utterly useless 68K emulator that gets worse performance running 3D Pinball Space Cadet than just outright emulating an entire Pentium II computer and playing it on Windows XP is also present. 10.4Fx is a very capable browser and I'm sad it's discontinued, though still does receive security patches.

for me, I think the answer has to be a used cheapo smartphone. I remember one phone I had was 40 bucks new, and that handled the web perfectly fine, so i'm sure you could find something even better for like 10 bucks if you really looked around. in terms of computers, I once managed to find a Windows 98 machine sitting outside some hole in the wall thrift store for 5 bucks, and i'm sure you could find a keyboard, mouse, and monitor for not much more in a similar (or the same) place. other than that, an older single board computer and a touchscreen would do nicely with a lightweight linux install i'm sure.

ok this is totally cheating but, library. libraries typically have computers that you can use for free and library cards are free. so i guess the cheapest internet system is a library computer.

The Raspberry Pi Zero 2 is now a thing, and for five more dollars than the Zero W, it packs a whole hell of a lot more punch. (Comparable to a Pi 3/+, if I remember correctly?)

...Of course, there's still the whole "512MB of RAM" thing to contend with, but considering a lot of the other ideas, that's not too big of an issue, really!

(This again assumes you have a display and input devices, though... and ignores the case completely.)

video playback on the Raspberry Pi 4 (with 8gb of ram) sucks pretty bad, i can say from experience, so i wouldn't imagine something even smaller doing much better... plus there's finding a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

there's always the classic Buy-a-Used-ThinkPadβ„’ method, i was using an x220 in 2018 and it was a pretty good time, and i'm sure with a lightweight OS it can handle most things inside of a web browser just fine, including video playback.

i think cheapness overall comes to the mileage you get out of a product. you could pay $100 for something and have it last a year, or $200 and have it last three years, i'd say the latter is a better deal. either way it's always fun to play with cheap technology and see how much you can get outta it

It might not be strictly speaking the cheapest option that can run a web browser, but honestly I think a great option for a cheap internet system these days would be a used Chromebook from a few years ago and installing Linux, I just got this used ThinkPad Chromebook 11e for very cheap on eBay and despite it having a somewhat old Celeron, it's plenty capable of modern web browsing on my Arch Linux install, even with somewhat heavy stuff like Discord (why is Discord so heavy though wtf)

It makes that Acer netbook I posted about a while ago in this thread look like a joke, that thing can't handle the modern web at all (Discord literally freezes it), and a Chromebook like this can often be had for cheaper too, probably thanks to schools offloading them in large numbers

You probably don't have to install Linux on one of these of course, but Chrome OS often no longer gets updates on these Chromebooks anymore because of their age (even though they still work fine...), and of course it's better if you wanna do anything that isn't just running Chrome, like if you use Firefox like me, or wanna use something like LibreOffice offline instead of Google Docs

Oh yeah, it can also be a bit annoying that a number of these Chromebooks only have 16GB of storage built-in, but most Linux distros don't fill up that much anyway (*cough* unlike Windows *cough*), and also btrfs filesystem compression is very handy on these, it saves quite a bit of space if you can get it set up

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
