one of my absolute dipstick hobbies is installing and messing around with old forum software a bunch. i've played around with vBulletin 3, a whole bunch of Acmlmboard versions, phpBB 3, 2, and even 1 (!). i'm gonna mess around with IPB 1.3 and 2.0 at some point.

(fun fact about phpBB 1: it's a complete rickety mess. i thought maybe it'd resemble 2 a bit more, but it's full of like grammatical errors and feels like a kid's crappy custom forum project. it had a long way to go)

i'm missing vB 2.0 -- i'd really like to play around with that. also early UBB/threads versions, i think, would be fun... i'd also like to play around with GameFAQs message board clones. i can't find any of them anymore. i've legit thought about writing my own, actually, just cuz i think that'd be a fun exercise.
if it were physically possible at all to mess around with ezboard, too, that'd be a lot of fun in its own way.

honestly, it's just really aesthetically interesting and fascinating to me. it's an incredibly niche interest, but i really enjoy it. a lot of these systems were the engines that drove internet culture throughout a lot of the 2000s, and they have aesthetic qualities that just aren't seen in web design at all anymore. it's fun to explore the different feature sets and themes and aesthetics that people communicated and connected to each other with.

one of the fun things about it is sort of similar to the pleasure i think you can get from messing around with old OSes in VMs -- you get to really experience the vibes and the mood of a particular time and place. i've talked about how forums feel like spaces to me in other forum threads here, and there's a particular feeling you get i think from going back to a forum and seeing everything that's the same. it really does feel like going back to a place in time...

anyway, it's just something i find kind of fun. i dunno if it's an interest anyone else has at all, but if so, it'd be cool to hear about other peoples' experiences with this sort of thing

God damn, remember IPB 1.3?

Shit, InvisionFree. Those led to some... interesting days.

Depressing to think that all those old boards are gone. It was wild to see my evolution through the years from various old board projects I was part of, even if I was a lot more hands-off on a lot of the later ones.

It's so much tougher to build a community nowadays than it used to be.

Old forums were definitely a product of their age. I suppose I've hit all of them, though I've only stood up IPB 1.3, 4.something and a couple versions of acmlmboard. I hated vBulletin back in the day but that image sure brings me back. What about SimpleMachines? Whoa, they just released a new version! I would have assumed that project was long dead.

Didn't some early version of phpBB only support up to 255 replies in a thread? Or was that particular database just...misconfigured. Regardless, there was a forum I briefly went to which had this exact limitation, and its residents were used to it and kept making sequel threads. Large continuous threads would be having like 20, 30 sequels, and somehow they knew exactly how and who should start the next one... just interesting how culture in a particular forum can stem from technical limitations.

To this day, GameFAQs has a 500 post limit on their threads. It's been a thing since I joined in 2005.

I have a bit of nostalgia for the AcmlmBoard 1.92 / 1.A2 era as well as IPB 1.3. I used those a lot back in those years. A couple of years back I made an AcmlmBoard clone on Drupal 8 which I've yet to port to Drupal 9.

i never really liked SimpleMachines ;;
the layout of their forums always seemed super messy to me and not that spatially efficient
still, it's something fun to play around with

i also hate vBulletin but i also feel some weird nostalgia and curiosity about it
it's weird. vBulletin's default smiley set and its aesthetic sort of promulgated everywhere through Something Awful, so it feels foundational to a decent chunk of internet culture
i also, for some dumb reason, really like the purple-and-yellow sort of color scheme. it doesn't feel like much that exists these days, and in the Admin CP especially it has some weird level of warmth to it aesthetically. of course, you could say that anything with color at all doesn't feel like much that exists these days

IPB was actually good, though, before they started Social Media-izing their forums to stay Relevant. ironically digging themselves further into the ditch of their irrelevance...
they could have just accepted that forums were what they were and that it was fine for them to lose a little activity. but by adding likes and profile comments and all this other engagement/click-driving garbage, they made forums bloated and tacky and literally got rid of what was so appealing about them as a contrast to social media in the first place.

...

god, Google having a click-based advertising model ruined the internet.

I hated SMF too, but I had a few haunts that used it, so it kind of grew on me. I still wouldn't choose it, but I've grown to not hate it so much.

Anyway, the simple answer to all of the web's problems is to switch from a per-click model to a time-on-page model. Imagine if Google ranked sites higher if they were useful, and lower if you opened them and immediately closed them because of some autoplaying video.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
