What games were you excited to play then were let down when you got to play them?

Zero Time Dilemma, the third game of the Zero Escape series.

999, the first game, is an excellent self-contained adventure for the DS, with a great twist and good pacing, it has some small flaws, but overall, a great game.

Virtue's Last Reward, the sequel, takes the first game and brings everything to 11, make what used to be a self contained story into a much bigger beast, and ending on one hell of a cliffhanger, and a cliffhanger that remained for many years.

Zero Time Dilemma, the final game in the series, drops the ball so hard that it somehow manages to make VLR a worse game merely by being connected to it.

I could go in more detail, but all of that would be spoilers, but let me just tell you that the wait for the final chapter was not worth it.

Literally every main pokemon game since pearl up to an including Y, after that I have stopped being excited for the mainline games. :x

Recently, World of Final Fantasy.... it's not a *horrible game*, but man the entire plot for most if it is just meandering around and when it finally gets going with some interesting bits it's already over. :X

It also doesn't help that the last hours of it is for some reason literally just selecting bosses from a menu list and tackling them in any order, like, common. Not even any opportunity to level if you need it, unless you want to go back to earlier areas in the game to grind.

Wargroove

It was hailed as the "next coming of Advance Wars"...and it's not. Like, it's a solid all around game, but it's got some really huge flaws, and the single player map design is not great, especially as it felt mostly like a fire emblem game rather than an *Wars game with a bunch of hero units running around smashing up giant armies of mooks.

I also personally don't really like the CO system they used and the UIX is bad.

Oh god, speaking of Wargroove, FUCKING STARBOUND.

Like, holy crap, I did not set my expectations as high as they would have wanted, but that game is such a clear cut case of mixed up priorities and under delivering on the promised premise. It might have an infinite world in size, but all of it provides less depth of engagement and things to do than like, maybe half of Terraria, and that feels honestly a bit too kind to starbound. The only thing it does well is (on some levels) sandbox building, because there are a lot of art assets to put to use. But even then the entire thing feels shallow.

I was kinda hype for Wargroove since I was into wars stuff, but I haven't heard amazing things about it since it came out... and, I decided to not get that game (or anything else the developer produces) well before the game came out, after it became clear that they basically abused underaged workers to basically sign agreements to not get payed while doing the "nudge nudge wink wink maybe we'll hire you later" (but obviously that will not happen) sort of deal... Oh and one of the owners of the company basically outed a trans employee as trans and made fun of them. I have no fucking tolerance for crap like that.

i don't know if i've gotten hyped up enough for a game to feel deeply disappointed by one, but i guess my vote would be Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies. i didn't necessarily go into the game with high expectations, but by the end of the second case i was starting to feel like maybe it was the Ace Attorney game i'd been wanting and was getting kind of excited to see how they resolved the open plot threads from Apollo Justice, or to see characters like Trucy or Klavier fleshed out a bit. spoilers: neither thing happens

i was also excited to see how the twists at the end of the game would work out, but... holy god, they were stupid. i won't go into too much detail for spoilers, but... they were just stupid, shallow answers to the questions that the game had been setting up, such that i felt a little cheated. bleh.

i still think it has some merits as a game, and there's parts of it i like (there's even parts i like about the parts i hate), and i'm still slightly biased in favor of it because my girlfriend likes it (and because i genuinely like Athena Cykes), but ... a little bit of focus and character deepening would have gone a long way.

i'd still defend Zero Time Dilemma -- as a standalone game. it's still disappointing, it still dropped a bunch of plot threads from Virtue's Last Reward like a hot potato, and i totally understand why people don't like it -- but that being said, i still think it's fun and rewarding in its own ways. that said, i have reasons to think that Kotaro Uchikoshi was feeling a little burnt out with Zero Escape by the time of ZTD, but again, i don't wanna go too deep into spoiler territory...

i was wondering about that one. it seems like it was being hyped up a lot before it came out, then when it did come out everyone just kind of stopped talking about it.

I actually read up that 999 was not really ever meant to have a sequel, but because it sold so well in the west (it sold really bad in japan), they decided to make a sequel. So I can totally see from that perspective why the series would struggle to keep up with plot threads and stuff...., especially since settings like these seem to benefit more from being self contained experiences and leave the surrounding things up the imagination instead.

There was also a lot of developer bullshit. Like, the GOG release was just...quietly scrapped and then they told everyone it was scrapped eight months later. PS4 release was delayed quietly for months with no info, huge patches to fix problems took six months and about a ten months respectively. (Including one where multiplayer just didn't work for about three months starting from a month after launch)

The post release/release was awfully done and that drained everyone's enthusiasm.

I really do wish some other developer would rise up to the challenge of making an good Advance Wars replacement, there have been a few attempts over the years and they have all sort of been rather mediocre or bad in one respect or the other.

I've personally found the most enjoyment out of Tiny Metal: Full Metal Rumble, which still has some flaws but fixed most of the flaws of the original Tiny Metal, but it's the closest thing I've played that replicates the "AW experience".

But for what it's worth, if you list almost every AW clone in the past 15 years, they'd all provide entries on this list of disappointing games.

just thought of one for me: sonic advance 2. i really enjoyed the first game for what it was, but in the sequel they forgot how to level design and made the later levels work against you. the worst part though (not counting getting to the special stages which i just didn't bother with) was probably the boss battles, they were an interesting idea but executed poorly and ended up being more frustrating than anything.

I guess I wasn't really 'excited' for it, so I'm not even that disappointed, but,
I had heard quite a lot about xenoblade, and the followup, x
(this was before 2 was a thing, too)
so, when I ended up finding a copy of the game, I figured I'd give it a shot

I just. couldn't get into it though? I remember not really understanding what I was doing at all,
it seemed like just a lot was going on at once in the couple of battles I initiated
and the fonts used in the game were so frickin small, which didn't help matters much what with my awful eyesight

maybe I'll give it another shot sometime? or I guess I could just try xenoblade 1, I dunno.

Metroid: Other M was the most excited i'd ever been about an upcoming game

*long sigh*

i adore Fusion, i really really liked the manga about Samus' life, and here we have game that aimed to both!

i did set my expectations through the roof, but it was supposedly going to be everything i liked, and even if it wasn't a Metroid game couldn't possibly be too bad! i think Metroid 1 is super good in ways no other game can match, there's no way this could go wrong!

Oh, I've got one for you.

Front Mission Evolved. Fucking Front Mission Evolved.

So! Front Mission. Tactical RPG series about giant mecha and the wars fought with them. Very much on the "real robot" end of the scale, not super robots - tanks and helicopters are still in use to varying effectiveness, etc.

It's had a few spinoffs, like Gunhazard, a side-scrolling action game. These spinoffs were good.

Front Mission Evolved was atrocious.

The story was nothing but utterly cliche drivel (brought to you by the writer of the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy, take that as you will), the gameplay was bland, depthless, and insultingly easy, the tone was completely wrong, what the fuck am I doing with powerups in what should be a Real Robot-style game, aaaargh

everything was wrong

Oh and sometimes you have to fight on foot. Outside of your mech. That is not what I buy a mech game for. But compared to the rest this is honestly relatively minor.

Mario Kart Wii. After Double Dash, which is still one of my favorite games ever, I thought it would be amazing. Instead it's terribly unbalanced (12 racers + realistic item distribution = constant barrage of shells, POWs, lightning, and that stupid cloud) and the physics feel off. Like the light characters are too light, so any collision can send them right off the track, into a pit. And then you lose your item so you have no chance to catch up. (Double Dash had that last problem too, though)

Wargroove? What about Battalion Wars? Now that was a stinker! I remember all the lead up to that being Advance Wars for the GameCube. Instead it was just a bland rts with rather crummy controls.

Other than that, I think the single biggest gaming letdown of my life was Chrono Cross. A sequel to an RPG that has a different battle system, doesn't let you revisit any locations from the first game, and just has some story elements tacked onto an otherwise unrelated tale.

Nowadays I realize that the game had a lot to offer, but at the time I was just very mad because I didn't want a completely different game, I wanted Chrono Trigger 2!

Zelda: Skyward Sword. A new mainline Zelda game! Awesome look, really cool art style! Motion controls that didn't work well at all and completely killed the game for me. I just couldn't make any substantial progress at all, despite trying many times, with much scratching my head if the controls just suck or if something's wrong with my Wiimote or Motion Plus, etc., etc... I haven't touched it in the 8 or 9 years since, maybe quite literally.

Dragon Ball Z Xenosaga 2 - The game looked cool, but I absolutely hated the hub world. I hated being forced to do random chores on it with its wonky physics. I hadn't played a DBZ game since the GC era, and I guess I was expecting a more Smash-like experience: menus that take you directly to battle, not having to awkwardly move a character around an uninspired world to talk to other people to get to my battles.... Bleh I seem to recall having to do fetch quests for like an hour before I even got to my first battle; that was just plain bad.

Animal Crossing New Horizons - Now, I did actually like this game quite a lot, but something about it just didn't click the way New Leaf did. I played it for about 20 hours and then just got bored of it, unlike New Leaf which kept me entertained for hundreds of hours. I can't really pinpoint exactly what about this game caused it though... I feel like the animals felt more repetitive and boring this time around...?

This game definitely isn't like unknown for being a disappointing game because it was in fact a very disappointing game for many but Sonic Forces might quite honestly be the most disappointing Sonic game I had ever played.

It's a very weird situation because when I played it, I was expecting a bit of a dumpster fire and I didn't even get that, it's a fairly competently made game but also at the same time you can tell there was a lot of rushed elements since there was a lack of say a Chaos 0 boss fight, Infinite kinda just disappearing near the end of the game, etc. It's just such AN AVERAGE game that there isn't much to hate or like about it, it just exists.

I did get to terrify some of my friends with some of the things I made with the Avatar creator, so at the very least that ended up making all the disappointment worth it in the end.

Sonic Forces was actually one of the first Switch games I got. It looked fun but yeah, it just ended up being really mediocre.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
