I thought that for the 2020th thread in this category, we should talk about games from 2020.

What games kept you alive during the pandemic?
What games came out this year? What games got postponed?
How did COVID-19 affect the releases?

I know that Pokémon GO got a lot of nifty changes. I tried it out for a while. It's still mostly pay-to-win since you run out of Pokéballs quite often, and you have to use more to get more.

Do you think that it was a boom or a bust for the gaming industry?
We're coming upon the Xbox Series S and Series X soon, as well as the PS5.

I remember this book I read called The Lemonade Crime, in which a kid owns something called an "Xbox 2020" which seemed legit to me at the time, but… This model never existed, and it's nigh impossible to find any evidence now without running into ads that mention the 2020 release of the Xbox Series X & S, and even the PS5.

I got mystery dungeon DX, it was good, really like the art style. It refined the game to the standard of the later entries in the series...., however, rescue team is still kinda short of a game so. ._.;

I've been playing a bit of Terraria with some online friends, and more recently Among Us with a few people I know IRL, but it's been fairly infrequent.

I need to give a mention to Lumines Remastered, because it's been THE game I've been playing when I need to zone out and just forget about life for a little bit. I've heard it described as an "acid-trip"-like game, and hell it's the game that eventually led to the creation of Tetris Effect (same developers). It's been a wonderful de-stressor for this insane year.

I wish Enhance Games would stop making exclusivity periods for Tetris Effect, I was really looking forward to playing it this year but apparently that will have to wait until they feel like it.

All of the big announcements we're getting now feels like what we would have gotten at E3. While I do miss E3, it's also kinda nice to be randomly surprised with single new reveals instead of having everything dumped on us at once.

Paper Mario: The Origami King occupied much of my summer, first with the game itself and then with watching other people play it.

And of course, Among Us is big right now. I've only actually played it once, but I've been watching a tons of videos of it. Even if I didn't get to experience a big 10-person Discord call like big-name streamers, I still had a blast playing with my friends in public rooms.

All of that isn't really any different than how I've gone about other recent years. Because of this years extra stress, I have already twice been driven to pick out a game in my backlog as a way to relax. I got to play A Hat in Time and OneShot as a result, and I'm really glad I did.

i spent a lot of this summer mired in misery playing sid meier's civilization VI. the whole thing feels like lost time and it was fuckin' miserable, actually.

other than that, i don't know. this hasn't been a very good year for gaming... i've been playing a fair amount of link's awakening on switch. lots of city sim games, for some reason (sc3ku, cities: skylines). terraria! i played a lot of terraria. and minecraft. with my gf, in the latter case.

i don't think i've cared that much about a game release so far this year... animal crossing came and went (hey, i wasn't the only person in this thread to use that phrase) without really capturing my interest, which is a shame cuz i loved new leaf.

overall, a disappointing year...

I can't remember the last game I bought. I've had games bought for me since them but those don't count for obvious reasons.

This year has been unusually weak for video games. There's been very little that catches my eye. I was correct on passing up Final Fantasy VII Remake because of my personal vendetta against Action RPGs (it's a genre that's the current video game fad, like survival horror games were all the rage in the 2010s). All they did was pad pointless stuff in and made it Midgar only, easily the worst part of FF7 because of how boring and bland the area is. Good graphics and music can't mask the game's problems, namely the bad gameplay from what I've seen.

When Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Paper Mario and a couple other games are the clear candidates for Game of the Year, there's something really wrong with games. Maybe Sony can get a good game on their platform this year.

it's actually kind of wild to me how old Among Us is

looking around it seems like there was like a dedicated little community for the longest time. imagine you're playing a little space-themed mafia clone for two years, and you're just chillin enjoying it and the community, when all of a sudden it becomes a fuckin huge phenomenon.

anyway, the Phenomenon of Among Us is definitely a 2020 thing, so in some weird way i think it kinda counts? not the game itself, but the experience of it being a huge thing, if you can consider that sort of an evolution of the game...

nintendo seemed content to just coast on ACNH this year so while i did play that a ton for a month or two, i also took the opportunity to play elsewhere. so it's only this year i've familiarized myself with classic doom and some of the megaten games. (last year it was dragon quest) i actually started the latter series with SMT2 and it was awful and i gave up halfway through due to the increasing ridiculousness of its hellmazes. either way, i liked both series quite a bit on the whole and doom's existing historic presence makes it particularly neat to play through for the first time

some other games i remember playing quite a bit this year, not that they necessarily came out in it: garden paws, risk of rain 2, littlewood, terraria, pokemon mystery dungeon: rescue team DX, persona 4, spelunky 2, hades, moon, bug fables, arknights, and genshin impact

terraria, RoR2, and factorio have some notability this year for major content updates and/or coming out of early access. they are all superb as roguelite-like-like games in their own ways

moon came out on the PS1 in 1997 and was only localized for the Switch this year. it's a stellar artsy game made by a lot of people with a lot of different backgrounds in the industry, most notably those who had worked on super mario RPG. then it went on to be one of Undertale's inspirations which in turn resulted in toby fox working some magic to spur its localization 23 years later

arknights was localized early this year and i started playing it a few months ago, mostly between sessions of other games. i dunno what it is about the character designs but many of them are so dang neat. it's otherwise a cool take on tower defense/RPG hybrid design and has been very generous compared to any other gacha game i've played. but it still is one so y'know, approach with caution. i love the buny

I really want to get a PS5 or Series X for Christmas, but I don't want end up ordering them at a high price from scalpers. They just keep on ordering a ridiculous amount of units and cleaning house until there's no more in stock and it just makes me surprised and angry.
Plus, I already got my first import PS5 game, Neptune re*Verse preordered, and I'm still waiting for them to make more consoles to be restocked and implement anti-bot security on their online stores.

In a broader definition of a game (not just a video game), I will mention Pandemic. It's not only to make a pun in this thread!

It's a collaborative board game where 2 to 8 players team up to cure 4 simultaneous diseases, by trying to find a vaccine and using the specific skills you get with your randomly assigned role to help you.

I started playing that game on New Year's Eve with my friends after eating a fondue. Back then, we just started to hear about things happening in Wuhan and made jokes about it while playing. We found the game really hard and couldn't win on the first evening but we kept playing from time to time, and we love it. Since we think in similar ways gameplay goes smoothly and nobody gets angry. I never played a collaborative board game before and it has been a lot of fun. If you have recommendations, please send them!

A few months later, after the first quarantine in France and before the second (and current) quarantine, we went in an abandoned building and played from there. Now that we're stuck home again, one of my friends is building a web app to play board games online, just for the sake of playing Pandemic; it will just handle card stacks, and placing images on top of other images, without implementing any particular rules, and might include an audio chat. I've been reflecting on variants of the game, either to make it a little simpler or to add new mechanics; you can look at a bit of that here.

We never chose to play Pandemic because of the pandemic, it was because my friend got it as a gift a few months earlier, but I will still mention it here because it motivated us and gave us more reasons to do things together.

Since April (the beginning of the first quarantine here), I've been lurking on the mailing lists of Agora Nomic. I had heard of nomics before, games where the rules are to change the rules, and found out Agora is one of the largest games still running; it is over 27 years old!

Agora is currently played on two mailing lists and two backup mailing lists, and discussed on another mailing list, an IRC channel and a Discord server. It is pretty interesting though in times of high activity it can be pretty hard to follow along and there's a lot of jargon; the most common acronym for example NttPF and its companion TTttPF (Not to the Public Forum and This Time to the Public Forum), because if you post to the discussion mailing list (a "discussion forum") it doesn't count as an actual in-game action, that goes to the business or official lists ("public forums"). A fun one that we rarely see but that I like is ATEOISIDTIDWHPAFALT. I won't try to explain that one, can you guess without looking it up online?

I finally decided I would join in the beginning of the month and helped the Reportor, an initiative to summarize each week of gameplay for archival. It's great to force myself to pay attention to the game. In parallel, I also got a nomic started on Breadpunk.club, the breadnomic.

Back to video games: I played Euro Truck Simulator 2 a lot during quarantine because me and my IRL friends like to truck together there. It's pretty nice, and as long as you don't go into the drama along TruckersMP (the unofficial multiplayer mod), their events and those of TruckersFM (a real webradio focused on ETS2) are pretty nice. This game is 6 years old and it still has an active community, and the studio keeps on adding content while caring about the players' feedbacks.

I started playing Cooking Simulator and Cities Skylines by myself, mostly because I got them on sale, and I like them a lot. I can waste a lot of time in Cooking Simulator trying to create cursed dishes (what if i made soup but using coke instead of water? or what if i made a pepperoni and green pepper sandwich?), and I waste a lot of time either trying to build a good city then fixing all the traffic jams, or trying to build the worst city and watching my citizens struggle.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity came out of nowhere this year. Absolutely no mention of it until, what, May? And now it's out already. I don't have it yet, but it's definitely on my list of games to get.

The only stuff I played that released in 2020 is all indie stuff, homebrew, and ROM hacks, because none of my hardware can handle official releases. That said, there was some good stuff in the last year and some bad stuff as well. 3D All Stars seems like a transparent attempt to (ahem) game people out of their money by attaching a time bomb, the new Animal Crossing really isn't for me in tone or gameplay (not a surprise, since only Population: Growing! and e+ are), and Cyberpunk is a classic case of shareholders demanding a game still in beta gets released and then suing the company when people don't like that they got a beta on release.

So, onto ROM hacks. Pokémon Gold 97 was great but I got stuck halfway through and couldn't beat it, Project Power '95 is cool but dead, and the Luigi hack is just a model swap with no HUD or text changes, let alone sounds. Smash Remix is my favorite way to play Smash now and I can't wait to get my Ultra 64 out of storage and play it again, on top of testing my 64DD to see if it made it through the mail alright.

Well then, that leaves me with the old games I started playing in 2020: Paper Mario and Ocarina of Time on the Ultra 64, Donkey Kong '94, and Link's Awakening. Paper Mario is good but I'm struggling against the Chapter 2 dungeon (I know, I'm pathetic), Ocarina of Time failed to capture my interest enough to go through the Deku Tree again when I forgot to save before turning my console off, and isn't personally "greatest game of all time" material. DK94 is actually really fun and works well, I'm just too stupid for it. And with Link's Awakening... I might just not be a Zelda person. It was enjoyable, but I never found myself dying to play it again after I saved and quit the first time.

Also Super Mario Land, but I think I've made my feelings on the game clear enough. If not, occasionally unplayable controls, wonky physics, but great soundtrack.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
