So I wanna buy Super Mario 3D All Stars, right? But I have Mario 64, and Super Mario Sunshine emulated, and my have a physical copy of Super Mario Galaxy. "I play that game through my Wii U" I also have Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo DS that I play through my 3DS XL.

So, should I buy 3D All Stars, or should I pass on it?

the physical edition will be a collector's item, if you care about that. otherwise, if you can already play the games, there's no real point to getting it for switch unless you value gaming mobility that much

It doesn't add anything in gameplay features, unless you count the soundtrack player in the menu as a gameplay feature.

I personally bought it, but the biggest factor in my decision was how valuable the physical copy will probably end up being in the future.

i got it digitally because i'm a stupid idiot sucker i wanted the convenience of sunshine and galaxy in portable form
also i didnt want to/have the means to hack my switch for emulation without getting banned by nintendo

of course, it turns out galaxy in handheld mode kinda sucks shit, so i basically just spent 60 bucks on super mario sunshine

in the spur of the moment i asked the local game store i frequent to hold one for me, but i didn't want it by the time it was available. i didn't want to be a dick so i bought it anyway

so uhh i played a bit of it. mario 64 is cool (despite him not saying "gay bowser" and some of his audio clips sounding higher pitch than usual), mario galaxy is great with joycons, and i still don't enjoy mario sunshine

note that i wouldn't have bought this if i could hack my switch, but it's too new of a model, i already have a fuckton of games bought digitally, and i'm not about to buy a new switch. OR I COULD JUST WAIT FOR AN EXPLOIT THAT WORKS ON PATCHED SWITCHES BUT IDC I LIKE TO SPEND MONEY

IN CONCLUSION: buy it if you like spending money. but get it physical because uhh collectors item i guess. and sharing it with friends

I think all four games should have been ported rather than emulated. Also that the physical copy should not inherently be a collector's item.

Don't like it, don't have any reason to buy it. I don't consider myself a collector despite preferring physical copies of games, I just enjoy games. Also, I don't have a Nintendo Switch and am not considering buying one; even if I had the money to, there is only one single game on it that I'm remotely interested in, and that's Smash 5.

But about All Stars specifically, it feels like such a blatant, anti-consumer (and I don't throw that around lightly) mind trick. Like yeah, sure, re-release three video games people love, where there are no official channels for owning them anymore besides I suppose Super Mario 64 if you're one of the six people to own and regularly use a Wii U in 2020, and then put a time bomb on it so that people are forced to not only buy it under pressure, but potentially also have to be locked into Nintendo's ecosystem with a console they might not otherwise want or need that just ate up $200+ of their wallet. That doesn't sound shady at all.

And of course there's the meme, but really, why not include Galaxy 2? I can't imagine it would be radically different from the process done to Galaxy 1. I say this as someone who's only ever played Galaxy 1, but it's pretty clear that a lot of people liked 2.

Of course, if you really want a ripoff, how about that Super Mario Bros. G&W, huh? $60 for a NOAC with a screen playing only a single game (despite it probably being piss easy to throw in 2 MM and 3 as well and make it actually vaguely worth the money), when you could buy literally that but with hundreds of games (probably including SMB) for $20.

My perspective on this probably isn't incredibly common. I'm cheap and play games on a lag of at least 7 years or more, thanks to never having up to date computer hardware ever in my life, so that also translates to my console habits. I still have my childhood Wii with 64 loaded on it (alongside the original SMB and SMB3) and in fact it's the newest home console I own by release date, my original copy of Galaxy, and always have the option to buy Sunshine or just load it on there myself, on top of owning an Ultra 64 with which I can not only play 64 but any of the hundreds of ROM hacks. So I can be as critical of All Stars as I want to be without ever being at risk of being hypocritical, and I will, because it genuinely seems kind of, if not fishy, then at least like a scummy practice designed to draw out panic buys out of people to really squeeze the market dry in as fast a time as possible. I dunno, maybe they have some big project they need to fund. Switch XL maybe?

I might get the Mario Game and Watch if someone manages to unlock the thing so I can put a general purpose NES emulator on there. It's really cute, I can't imagine a better way to bring NES (And maybe DMG/GBC?) games around!

But yeah, for just one game, that I have a thousand copies of anyway... And I prefer playing Mario 35, so there's just no reason for it, except that it's cute. And let's be real, it's super cute!

So far, I played through a bit of Mario 64 and my only opinion is that the controls will definitely require getting used to. I haven't played the original, though, so there's no nostalgia for me, and the game doesn't seem to me like something quite as special though.

Glad to see it's not just me. I played the original Super Mario 64 on launch day (and for several months afterward), and I found the controls in All Stars to be wonky and floaty. Maybe I just forgot how janky the controls were in the original (I haven't bothered to go back and check) or maybe I'm spoiled by modern games having controls that work most of the time, but the Mario 64 experience just put me off the whole collection.

I also didn't like Sunshine or Galaxy much when they were new so I haven't played the All Stars versions and have no opinions on them.

Having access to the soundtracks is nice, I guess.

I think the wonkiness of SM64's controls is mostly deadzone.

N64 control sticks were terrible with a huge deadzone and they don't appear to have made it large enough on the collection.

Nah, SM64's controls really do have a bit of a learning curve. Once you're used to it, it's really smooth and fun to control, but getting used to it takes more effort than in any other 3D Mario.

I haven't played 3D All Stars, but I've recently played SM64 on a 64, and the controls are pretty jank, especially when you compare to, say, Mario Odyssey. The weirdness comes from the controls being exactly the same as a modern Mario game, but they just lack the polish.

I think it mostly holds up, but only if you're willing to take that grain of weirdness and remember that it was more or less the first 3D platformer that was any fun to play.

So I finally caved in and bought the game, I found it brand new online for $45.00 USD.

I'm planning on buying another copy this Friday for my personal use, I mostly got into it cause even if they're ports it's still a collector's item, I never owned a limited collection game before. And when I get my other copy on Friday I'm gonna get my hands dirty with Super Mario Sunshine, I never beat it on the GC so I'm gonna get my revenge.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
