Hi Julers!

With the hectic life we're all living these days, I was thinking it would be nice if we could find an evening to hang out with each other.

I discovered a cool project the other day. It's called ClassiCube and it's essentially a recreation of Minecraft classic (think 2010). It's open source and written in pure C, and it runs super fast and well, but at the same time, it's basically pixel perfect for the Java original (seriously, including very specific graphical bugs, it's surreal).



I'll be starting a Jul server for the weekend of October 2nd to 4th. I'll be closing the server after that, it'll be a one-of-a-kind fun event to get together and have fun with fellow Julers.

We'll be playing with some QoL improvements like a few extra blocks and longer messages, but otherwise it'll be a pretty accurate creative experience.

Mark your calendars, and I'll post future updates in this thread!

Oh wow, I haven't played Classic in ages. I remember back around 2010 or so on an old, now-defunct forum I used to lurk, they had a Classic server as well. They even had a 'Spleef week' that involved them changing the world to a smaller one that was mostly consisting of Spleef arenas.

I might not partake in this event, but I'll consider it. Looks fun, at least!

I'll address this: personally, I don't have much time to play games these days, and I believe I'm not the only one. It's a lot more attractive to me to do a planned event that allows us to clear our schedule and meet and play for a bit and make a nice memory out of it, like a short vacation with friends, then maintain a languishing minecraftclassicube server for months.

Of course, I cannot in any way oppose somebody making a server after this event, but it's not gonna be me

there's also been some talk of doing this with an actual minecraft server proper, either in creative or split creative/survival mode. it was fun

classicube has a few shortcomings that really bite, mostly the lack of signs and decent lighting options

but it worked out well for what it was

the server's still up in readonly mode, you can come check out the builds! once I have a bit of free time I'll shut it down and upload the map and all.

this was a TON OF FUN and everybody put a lot of heart into their builds and it shows!! we'll definitely do this again
