It's been too long since I've actually contributed something of any value to this forum so I need to fix that, and I'm doing so by starting a thread about that one puzzle game everyone and their grandmother knows about. (Hey, had to be done.)

What are your favourite/least favourite Tetris games? Any mechanics from past games that you enjoy but haven't been seen since? Or just talk about strategies or high scores, or such.

My favourite personally is probably the 1999 version of Sega Tetris, and in fact is where my current avatar originates from. It's a somewhat difficult game without quite reaching Tetris the Grandmaster levels of difficulty, while also having several fun mechanics, such as a slot machine that awards bonuses for several of the same line clear in a row, and has some damn fine visuals for a Dreamcast/NAOMI game. The scoring can be kinda broken, though, especially if you can memorize the Power-On Pattern for the game's end roll. (Or, for the NAOMI version, the pattern for the main game as well. Sega kinda has issues with that in their games.)

I'm used to playing the N64 tetris games so:

The New Tetris
Tetrisphere (hey this counts right? )

I'm not used to the 7-bag system or the T-spins of newer Tetris games (Puyo Puyo Tetris for example), so I'm adjusting how I play the game to match these new features a bit more.

i haven't played very many, but my personal favourite would be any from the tetris the grand master series. very granular difficulty level, and always pushing people to go better! the only ones i actually own are TGM1 and Tetris + Cardcaptor Sakura Eternal Heart. i don't think there's any mechanics i'd like to see return to 'current' (guideline) tetris, but i lament the guideline's existance and feel a tetris should be the biggest rewarded play in a series named tetris. yknow, stack blocks clean in a game about stacking blocks.

as a somewhat latecomer to tetris (I think DS was my first which is a damn fine game holy shit) I can't wrap my head around GB/NES tetris, so I've stuck with the newer tetris company ruleset-based games instead.

but for favorites, it's a close one between tetris effect and 99. effect for me, as cliché as it sounds, was a profound emotional experience. if you let yourself get sucked in it's really something else.

tetris 99 has induced a anxiety like no other game has, causing me to mis-drop and make awful decisions. but it's so good! I don't have much energy to play 99 these days outside of the occasional events they have, but it's always a good time every time

There doesn't seem to be as much love for Tetris DX compared to the 1989 release, despite DX being the better game - or that's what I think, anyway. Guess nostalgia and its iconic status are big factors as to why the original is more well-loved, or at least more well-remembered?

That said, Tetris DX and, funnily enough, Puyo Puyo Tetris are probably my favorite Tetris games of all time. Really love PuyoTet's Swap mode - give me my Vita, Swap Tournament (or whatever the endless mode with changing opponents is called in English again), and you'll shut me up for an hour or so, depending on how well I do.

Tetris DS (the released one) is another good version, but I honestly spent more time with the alternate game modes in that game than the proper Tetris part. Oh, and speaking of alternate modes, as well as noticing RanAS' post down in the history, Tetrisphere is kinda interesting too, I guess!

Not sure if I've played any others to any great extent. I think I tried one of the TGM games via MAME once but, er, well... I'm not that good at Tetris, not at all.

Right, I forgot about that! Early adopters outside Japan in particular will have gotten the system bundled with the game; think it wasn't bundled in Japan, and that the system was later available without a game elsewhere, too?

Okay let me rant about Tetris Effect for a sec:

- June 6, 2018: the game was announced for the PS4.
- November 9, 2018: it was released as a PS4 exclusive for 6 months.
- July 23, 2019: the game was released for PC, but as an Epic Games Store exclusive for 1 year.
- November 10, 2020: the multiplayer version of the game will release exclusively for Xbox One, Xbox Series (X/S) and the Microsoft Store, for 6 months.
- Summer 2021 (probably July): the multiplayer version of the game will be added as a free update to all other versions, and the game will finally be released on Steam.

I don't own any 8th-gen console, so I have to buy it on PC. In 2019, I switched from using Windows 7 to Linux Mint (for many different reasons) so that means that Microsoft's Store is definitely not an option (unless I want to set up a virtual machine every time I want to run the game). So that means the only option I have at the moment is to buy the game on the Epic Games Store (which still isn't ideal as EGS is also not native to Linux, but at least it works, unlike the Microsoft Store).

*sigh*

Last year I thought, "y'know what, I want to avoid all the issues Epic is dealing with their store right now, so I'll wait a year or so until the game comes out on Steam, it'll be fine". I mean, it's not like I only buy games from Steam, if it was available through GOG.com (which lets be real, they're never going to do that) I'd totally buy it too but...man.

I started college on August 2018 and will finish it by July 2021 (probably). I will have completed what is essentially an entire chapter of my life before getting to play this game. You have got to be kidding with me.

I've been looking forward to playing this game ever since it got announced! I've bought Lumines Remastered (a game from the same developers) and I've been enjoying the hell out of it ever since, it's been an excellent de-stressor and, if Lumines with its quirky songs is capable of that, I can only imagine how playing Tetris Effect would feel like. And yet, at the moment I feel like yet another exclusivity deal is yet another punch in the face. we're in a pandemic season can you companies just not be greedy for once thanks

Anyway, I personally play The New Tetris the most, because it's a good version with a great soundtrack on my favorite console of all time. GB89 is an obvious one but I only really play it on the go. DS I don't have as much fun with, it feels too pandering.

My strategy is just building up a channel until a long piece shows up and dropping it in there for as many points as I can get.

Probably my favorite version is DOS Tetris from 1986, because it got me started on a teenage YouTube channel, and that was a fun period in my life even if I look back on it now with nothing but shame and regret.

Equipment:

Right now I mostly play Tetris 99 and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, but I used to be a big fan of "The Next Tetris" on the Dreamcast, which used to have a mechanic where blocks could have different color (sometimes more than one color), nearby blocks of the same color stick together and different colors are affected by gravity, allowing for cascade line clears and such.

The goal is simple: you have a field filled with some lines of random garbage the bottom, and you need to remove the bottom-most line to progress. If you do that 3 times in 5 minutes, you win this level and go to the next one.

Hello! I am reviving this thread simply to mention that Tetris Effect has also been released on Steam (I bought it during the launch sale it had), and I've just went through the entirety of Journey mode on Normal. I tried the first area on Expert but that quickly turned out to be a bad idea. Maybe one day.

This is a trippy game. Exactly how I like it. And relaxing too. Feels nice to actually get to enjoy it, even if it's like years after everyone else...

Am willing to try out the Multiplayer feature sometime this week (and later too maybe).

Good luck getting all of the trophies. I got about 70% or so of them but they're harder to get in the PS release (SS everything, not S).

Not sure I should be excited or not anymore but Arika is apparently coming up with a supposed push of their TGM series to home console with intent to release another (presumably 4, which if I remember correctly was canceled for unsavory reasons) based on how it performs in the market.

Honestly, I feel like it would've made a better impact over a decade ago but better late than never, I guess?

I need to get back into Tetris... I wonder how well TNT runs in Sixtyforce, given that's the only real option for Ultra 64 emulation on Leopard, and I won't have Linux up and running for at least another few days.
