anyway, my idea was a little more freeform. the controller components would come in two varieties:

face components could be linked together freely, and consist of individual things like d-pads, joysticks, ABXY, touch screens, trackballs, fight sticks, and whatever else one might want to play a game with. since these components likely vary in size, there would probably have to be some kind of grid-based form factor where they can plug in together neatly to form stable controllers

side components attach in the same way as face components but are the "dead ends" so to speak. these consist of things like grips, shoulder buttons, infrared sensors, wireless adapters, AC adapters, battery compartments, USB ports, and so on

the main flaw of this design is that the more flexible the components are, the more connectors you have to manufacture for each one. like even going with bare minimum triangular face components, they would need to be able to interface in three directions, and if they're a larger component they might need to have multiple ports on each side, and every port must be able to distribute a large variety of information (whether it's from input, USB, HDMI, etc.) freely between the components. i'm not much of a hardware geek but in the foreseeable future i can only see this level of flexibility culminating in something that's extremely expensive, extremely fragile, and extremely inaccessible to all but the techiest of bros

the Nintendo Switch is a pretty sweet compromise

Why dont you make a 3D/2D design and show us your imagination?

going forward i could definitely see all consoles taking after the Switch and Steam Deck. i'm sure there will always be big-box consoles, but with the amount of power you can put into a little rectangle, it makes me wonder if the only reason a console would still be a big box in a decade would be for backwards compatible with game discs (which companies seem happy to discard anyway)

i'm guessing now that whatever comes after the PS5 and Xbox Series will likely be handheld/hybrid

I really hope not. There's a reason that Nintendo stuck with the SP design for 15 years for their handhelds -- it reduced the footprint while keeping the controls and screen protected from what's in your pockets. We're basically bringing back the Sega Nomad now, except you don't even necessarily get to own the games you pay for.

personally i like the steam deck, in concept. drm sucks, but it's a computer inside a controller. i could play pirated games on it if i wanted to. but there's no telling that if Microsoft and Sony were to follow suit in portable gaming if the platform would be as open as Valve's.

i like portability, as long as i can plug it into a screen if i want to. a handheld with the power of a desktop plugging in to some peripherals to become a desktop sounds really nice to me. i'm tired of space being taken up by giant boxes. of course it's not going to be for everyone though

Portability, fine, but the Switch and by extension Steam Deck are rolling handheld design back to 2002 and aren't really even all that portable by even 2016 standards. The Steam Deck, sure, I understand, it has a Ryzen in it, but the Switch is ARM just like the 3DS. I have a regular size 3DS and it's about the perfect size for a handheld, I don't think I'd really be that happy even carrying around a 3DS XL. Maybe the Switch Lite might help, but it still has a big old screen and a pair of joysticks for you to hold in one direction through the friction of your pockets, and one good scrape with a set of keys is going to be enough to leave at least some score markings.

i guess you're right. i kinda hate playing my switch as a handheld, let alone something that probably weighs twice as much. i was mostly thinking of portability in the sense of being able to take something to someone else's place so i can plug it in, or taking the device into another room at the very least

To be honest, I definitely don't see the other two moving out of the traditional console business. However, I could probably see Sony starting their handhelds back up again and Microsoft bullying Nokia into making an Intelvidia version of the Steam Deck, if they don't just ask for an Xbox app to come to the Steam Deck.

I'll expand more here later, but wow 8MB was optimistic. That's late '90s stuff, not 1987. 512K would be a little more appropriate, but even that's 5 times the SNES. Also, I'm now thinking a 16MHz and a 20MHz 186/187 combo, depending on serial number, and EGA for low serial numbers (from release on December 18, 1987 to about March of 1988) and VGA for higher ones, with an RBGI out interface for the former and a DE-15 out for the latter, on top of standard composite and RF.
As for getting code to the processor, besides the standard top-loading cartridge (that uses Commodore 64 cartridges), it'd have a 25-pin serial port for a floppy disk drive and an audio in port for a tape deck.

reminds me of a video i watched recently where they mention that they predict Xbox Game Pass might come to PlayStation. that sounds totally insane, but not insane enough to not happen in this timeline. either way you could get game pass on the steam deck if you just install windows

considering all of Microsoft's acquisitions, it makes me wonder where PlayStation will be in a decade or two... not that I was planning on buying any new consoles anyway so

I guess this is just what happens when people want console-like games on the go, you need a big screen to be able to play it, you wouldn't be able to play Skyrim on a GBA-sized screen, hell even the PS Vita's screen was too small for console games, which was very clear when using it for Remote Play with a PS4

I do miss the clamshell design of the DSes, but for what it's worth, I always kinda hated the SP lol, I always thought its square design with its awful short dpad/buttons was a stupid compromise compared to the much more comfortable original model which wasn't even that much bigger

I did always prefer the smaller 3DSes, and didn't like the XL because it wasn't as pocketable and was so much bigger, but with the Switch I've just had to come to accept that the size doesn't matter too much for me now that I can't really pocket it anyway, though I do kinda wish I also had a Switch Lite (I couldn't use one as my main system though, it can't be docked or hacked)

I'm really excited for the Steam Deck despite its size, both because I'm excited for its abilities but also because a lot of its huge size comes from its ergonomics and comfort, I always found the Joy-Cons uncomfortable and my hands aren't even that big, I've 3D-printed my own fake Steam Deck and it seems like it's going to be very comfortable (though mine's way too light, I do worry a bit about the Deck's weight)

i've always had a hard time finding handhelds comfortable. for me, i never found any GBA model comfortable, including the SP. i've found the original-sized DS and 3DS somewhat comfortable, but it gets hard to figure out how to posture myself while looking at the tiny little screen very quickly. the 3DS XL applies in this regard too

the DSi XL, however, for some reason is just superbly comfortable to me. maybe it's because the dpad isn't shoved downward by the circle stick? i dunno. also the screen kicks ass. it's my favorite handheld ever, followed by the Game Boy Color, which is also pretty comfy

i never found the Switch comfortable in handheld mode at all, same goes for the PSP. i haven't used a PS Vita.

i think i overall just prefer holding a controller in my hands, and looking up at a screen. that's when it feels really nice, and i don't notice that i'm even using a device. i'm just playing a game. that's why the Switch Pro Controller is a must-have for me.

i just don't like handhelds, i just like portability.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
