There are so many text editors out here that it literary looks hard to make a choice for which to use.

To list probably but a few of them:

i) Atom
ii) Vim
iii) Neo-vim
iv) Nano
v) Sublime text
vi) Kate
vii) Gedit

Probably a bunch of others.

It looks like Qt Creator will just be good enough for my current C++ based project and any C project but the next day you are working with Python, next with PhP.

Which text editors do people use?

notepad++ is great if i'm on windows. super fast and great featureset

if i'm on linux, i waffle between vim and nano depending on how "deep" into the files i'm digging — for a quick edit i prefer nano, for something more dedicated i like to use vim

as for macOS... it's the same as linux if i'm editing system files, if i'm not... textedit, honestly. i don't do a lot of coding on macs

Notepad++ on Windows for the most part, ex. when coding something I don't have an IDE installed for (love ex. the tabbed interface and search/replace functionality), plus regular Notepad for other random stuff. Also nano on linux, especially/mostly for config files and what have you.

i've never used notepad++ for coding, but i usually keep it open as a long term clipboard for notes and links that i'll need to reference later. it's pretty much replaced notepad on any windows machine i use

oh, yeah, for quick notes i almost always use regular notepad. even if i'm using desktop linux i'll usually use... like... whatever bundled default window manager editor over nano or vim for quick notes

visual studio code on windows, and nano/vim on unix. vs code is known be a bit of a ram hog but its feature set makes up for it, imo. there's probably a better editor i could use, but meh.

another one in the Notepad++ club.

I discovered it thanks to HBCD using it as the default text editor, which was back around 2011-2012. So it's been a while.
I prefer things being accessible with a menu bar rather than having to memorize several button combinations.

I tend to jump back and forth between them. The absolute most important thing for me a Vim keybindings mode. If it has that, I'll use whatever really.

On Windows, I tend to use VS Code for projects. It's a little too heavy for casual file editing, but for programming it's pretty nice. It's got all the Intellisense and debugger support I'd want. Besides that, I absolutely love the simplicity of plain ol' Notepad for making notes and just getting ideas down. I used to use Notepad++ a lot, although I've been using it a lot less lately now that VS Code exists and Notepad supports UNIX-style line endings. It's still useful sometimes, though.

On Linux, I tend to use just straight-up Vim or KWrite/Kate/KDevelop. I like the KDE editors because, well, Vim keybindings, but also they have a very nice interface with nice syntax highlighting and integration with KDE, my preferred distro. Special shout-outs to KDevelop, which is more of an IDE but it's fantastic for C/C++ programming.

Quick file edits: xed unless a graphical interface is out of the question, in which case, nano

Projects and complex edits: standard VSCode with telemetry disabled. Terminal access means I can do commands (like run files or start servers), Git means I can do version management, plus there's multi-file editing and themes and syntax highlighting and stuff

When I used Windows, I used Notepad++ for quick file edits. It's thanks to it that I've grown used to the Obsidian theme now (though I've also been using 'Tomorrow Night Eighties').

I used vi/vim for ages, but after finding dte I could never go back. It's basically vi but with keybinds, and very easy to configure (by default, works like a standard gui editor).

Notepad++ on Windows, of course...

Is it just me or would a thread or just a post anywhere on the internet count as trolling? It is probably just my bad experience?

Hopefully this does not get me banned but posting this in a place like irc.blinkenshell.org, an otherwise very decent place creates strange tension.

It is probably a good idea for me to quit worrying/thinking about text editors and just stick with Qt/Qt creator and create plugins to support languages that are needed?

but like, just asking for recommendations for text editors is fine? don't know why people would take issue or be tense about it
