Hello!

First post here, and one that a friend and I have been obsessing about recently, as there is absolutely no explanation online for this.

We were looking through "Panic On Funkotron" for Genesis in a hex editor, and found something intriguing among the dialogue for Trixie, the mermaid who gives you special abilities if you find her secret locations. One scripted scene has her thanking you for finding her 'ultra secret' location and as a result, she'll give you invincibility until the end of the game (where the abilities usually just last until the end of a level).

I've played this game since release and I've NEVER heard of this 'ultra secret' Trixie spot*. When asking Toejam and Earl's official Twitter page, I was told this may have been a scrapped idea, but I'm not willing to give up so soon.

I'm guessing it's between levels 4 and 15 (the dialogue is written as though you've already met, which means after level 3, and level 16 having a game-wide ability would be pointless). Where most Trixie locations are just off the main path and fairly easy to find, I assume this one's found through some obscure, elaborate means - sort of like how performing specific tasks in level 1 (Funky Forest) takes you to a 'Warp Zone' with doors to levels 3, 4 and 5.

Any ideas?

* Yes, level 5 has a hidden area called the "Ultra Secret Spot," but despite how she describes it, this seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the hidden Trixie.

Neat find. Can't help in finding more stuff, just posting to say it's cool seeing someone else appreciate this game. I grew up with it and find any comments about it being vastly inferior to the first to be outlandish. It's got great graphics, music, setting, what's there not to like? Especially 2 player! The prototype on the net was my ROM dump too, that's how much I like this game

Prototype? Any differences? (I'd be curious to see if the hidden Trixie might've been removed between that and the final.)

....Holy hell, this prototype is EXTREMELY different!

Someone should document this, there are changes all over the place.

There's lots not even found yet I bet in terms of hidden graphics. I've never been much of a documenting person and can't hack into a game like what you see happen with Sonic games, so the proto's been sort of left forgotten for awhile.

The "danger" sign is different, I noticed. It's a crossed-out circle, rather than an "x".

Even still though, I mean, the entire structure of the game is different (as are nearly all of the level titles). No Trixie yet at all, levels 2 and 3 are combined and don't flow together at all, this game's 'level 3' is an early version of level 5.

Is it just me, or is the prototype impossible?

The Big Slide (level 8) seems to have an unreachable Earthling.

Fortunately, I found the original Sonic Retro topic for this prototype.

This does indeed have codes to allow progress, though it should be noted the ending is a complete placeholder.

Hey there! So glad to find someone out there who shares the same sentiments as me.. :-) Sometimes there are these 'consensus internet opinions' that just seem to take hold and become the de facto truth such as "Donkey Kong 64 is an irredeemable pile of collectathon garbage" and "Toejam and Earl 1 was incredible compared to its disappointing sequel" . I always wonder how exactly do these things become so ingrained and widespread.. like truly how many people actually even agree with this implied consensus?

lol but anyways from what I understand, Toejam and Earl: Panic on Funkotron usually seems to get criticized for being "just another boring 2d side scrolling platformer in the age when they were a dime a dozen" or something to that effect. But what does that even mean? Is Super Metroid, Sonic 1-3K, SMW 1 & 2 disqualified too? How about Donkey Kong Country series? But anyways, TJ&E2 is a lot more than just another typical platformer. It's a lot more exploration based than any of the typical sidescrollers of the day, and as you mentioned - it had an amazing imaginative world with awesome characters... absurdly good music and art .. multiple endings rewarding you for more and more exploration.. really fun minigames... and yes I can't think of many better 2 player simultaneous co op sidescrollers of the day.. in fact it may be THE premiere 2d co op sidescroller of the 16 bit era... hell it might be THE BEST 2D CO OP game period of the day...

The first TJ and E is a great game no doubt.. a nice unique funky little game .. I have nothing against it. But TJ&E2 kept that exploration aspect of the first one and took it so many levels beyond, I too find it extremely silly to dismiss it as 'vastly inferior'. LoL

Needless to say I am actually quite interested in the prototype you guys were discussing and I am shocked how hard it is to find any other discussions about it or places to download it from. The old screenshots in the original thread have expired as well :-( If you have any way to hook me up with anything I'd love to take a look at it.

Edit - I believe this was the one mentioned: https://hiddenpalace.org/ToeJam_%26_Earl_in_Panic_on_Funkotron_(Aug_1993_prototype)
