Noticed we didn't have a thread for this yet, but what are your thoughts?

Me, the recent big news of not having a national dex... I'm honestly confused. Like, I understand the notion of not having Pokemon that may not belong in a region to not be there, but I can't help but think that they basically lowkey confirmed Sinnoh remakes. Plus, the gen 2/3 schism from 16 years ago. It's happened before, if albeit for more understandable (but still bullshit) reasons.

I was hyped for Sun and Moon, but I've barely gotten through the game since it launched. Kinda worried about whether I should get Sword/Shield as a result, especially when these latest gameplay reveals turn main series staples on its head.

Personally I find this type of reasoning to be completely bullshit myself.

Like, I'm down with that not all pokemon can be found in a region, heck, I'm down with that if they are developing for a new system, it might not be feasible to have all the mons be there at launch so you can import them.

But, and this is a big but, we live in the online age of patching. They can almost assuredly patch in support for them later. In fact, it would be absurd to suggest that they won't add in a lot of the not included mons in a later game in the same gen.

Also, considering that the series is one of the most grossing video game series avalible, and taking into account all of the double dipping they have done over the years (as well as the fact that they charge for pokemon bank rather than having it be a feature you get with the games), I have absolutely zero respect for this decision. Especially so when you consider that having your own specific mons that you create your own relations with is one of the freaking corner stones of the series.

I don't want to come across as attacking you, it's just, I see that type of defence for their actions a lot, and I think it holds no water.

As for the games, they seem nice, but probably won't get them. They are introducing another new version only gimmick that they will throw away after these games, just like z-moves and mega evolutions, and they are seemingly not taking any steps towards improving a lot of the big issues I have with the staleness of the series. The more "open world" areas look nice though.

looking back, most games prevented prevented generation migration to the newer games until you reached the postgame and obtained the national dex - if they did the same for SnS for 'balance' or 'experience control' purposes i'd completely understand (and probably prefer?), but outright saying "sorry not at all" really doesn't make any sense to me. I mean, sure, i'll just keep my living dex in Home, and didn't really plan on importing pokemon into SnS, but

speaking of living dex, i'll be buying the game to keep that going. if the game's fun then it'll be a bonus

If there's one pattern I can bet on since the gen 2/3 schism, it's with every new engine developed, a remake is bound to be announced. Since Gen 5's engine is an updated version of Gen 4's, we had no remake in Gen 5.

Honestly I'm attempting to figure out if I can reasonably trust Game Freak in regards to the national dex for this very reason.

Roxie
idk that the engine in gen 8 is all new,
so much as it is a continual development/iteration on the same engine theyve been using since gen6,
in the same way that gen 5 was an iteration on gen 4's engine,
which in itself had parts that were an iteration on gen 3's engine
gen6 was just the first time they had to mostly start from scratch since gen3,
so they likely decided then and there to code the new engine in a more portable,
and more generalized, reusable form

that said, the engine is only so much of the game's content
i can understand why they didn't put every single pokemon into sword/shield
it comes down to the obligations and schedules they have to meet for other parts of the pokemon franchise
the sun and moon anime is winding down, the last bits of merch are being sold,
last few event pokemon on the schedule are being distributed, and so on

we may imagine that sword/shield development started right after sun and moon came out,
and that may be partially true; there was that "pokemon stars" rumor,
which iirc turned out to be game freak doing an engine test on the switch using sun/moon assets
and we can obviously imagine that story planning, pokemon and human design and such started at that point
but the actual development of the game in earnest almost certainly took much longer
it's possible it only began in earnest in 2017 or 2018,
depending on how much manpower developing ultra sun/moon and let's go took away from sw/sh dev time

also, every last old-gen pokemon that appears in the new games needed a new model.
the models in gen 7 are not necessarily trash, and im sure they could be used to start from,
but they're definitely made for a lower resolution than the switch's,
and using them straight on the switch would likely expose deficiencies in the models
i imagine we'll see a lot of kanto pokemon available in galar,
since they already had to do that work in order to get kanto pokemon ready for let's go

so given that theyve been pressed into a corner in terms of time constraints,
i honestly understand why not everything is in sword and shield
i dont mean this necessarily to defend the choice they made,
i wish they had the ability to push back and say "hey,
we need more time or else we're gonna be doing some pretty hard crunch",
but this is where we're at

one thing that works in game freaks favor is that unlike the 3ds,
the switch's update system isn't complete balls

on the 3ds, iirc,
patches require you to send down an update with at least a placeholder for EVERY FILE in the base game,
even if you're only actually touching one or two files
this is why some games, like smash 3ds, use a very particular file structure
where you have everything packed into one file in the romfs,
and the executable can check for dlc/updates in similar but much smaller packed files.

anyway, on the switch it's much more sane and you just send down the files you need
so i can imagine them patching in more pokemon later on and having them become available for transfer
or even like, releasing them as dynamax raid battle pokemon that you can get in the postgame,
kind of like raid bosses in pokemon go, or the spirit board events in smash ultimate

wow ah anyway sorry for the gigantimaxed post, i just have, like, Feelings about crunch in gamedev

The new character designs and Pokemon designs are wonderful. Between Dynamaxing, raid battles, and the wild area, it looks like these new titles will have a lot of fun ideas.

Some of the (pre-release) screenshots do have me a bit worried, though. Specifically, I'm worried that the Pokemon Company isn't giving Game Freak the time, resources, or respect they deserve just because they would rather dump funds into mobile games.

Clearly one nice solution would to be the creation of a separate game that can include all the various types (perhaps on the Switch) but not really have much in the way of catching mechanics, more of a bank or just go-do-things-ish-thing

and allow you to transfer to/from it for the games that support certain mons

They've tried this a few times but never actually supported it that well.

that's basically what Pokemon Home's gonna be on the switch from what i've gathered, the new Bank going forward that can hold any poke and you use to transfer between Go and Sleep and Sword/Shield (and migrate forward from Bank)

My partner played it. Said it turned them off Pokémon, and I can't really blame them on that. It had me convinced for years that it was a rushed 3DS port until I read that it was forked off Let's Go... which makes the "we couldn't make aaaaall... 890 models in time for release!" claim even more laughably obviously false when they already had 153 of them ready to go, in Switch format and everything, with at least polished enough for most people animations. That, and... you know, delaying the game a few months is always an option. One that desperately needed picking, from the looks of things. Not that animation quality is much of a concern at Game Freak these days it seems... Dynamaxing ended up being a waste of time, as most generation gimmicks are, and from what I hear you need a $30 expansion pack to bring the game up to $60 worth of content.

Honestly, moving to 3D was a total mistake.

I've seen a lot of people bring up reusing models, but a lot of people don't seem to understand that there is a lot more to models than just the polygons and basic texture mapping. It's not like they can just copy/paste models from the 3DS, upscale the texture, and call it a day, which is what people seem to assume. Now that the game is out and we have access to the assets, we can see that every model has new bones (tied to various special effects), new textures for the new lighting style, and new textures required for the Dynamax glow effect. Plus, any Pokemon with unique shaders would need to be updated in a way that works with the new lighting/effects.

Could they have done all this to the remaining Pokemon if they were given an extra year to finish the game? Of course. Would there have been a good reason to extend development time that much just for extra content that only a small percent of players would ever get to see? Not really.

Let's Go was a Switch game as well. In fact, Sword and Shield was forked from it (see: Build 30). So... why they couldn't use those 153 models from that game so they wouldn't have to redo all that work and they could focus on the other 740, thus saving a not inconsequential amount of time and money, is beyond me.

Because it's not about whether or not the previous game was on the Switch. The bones and textures I mentioned are specific to Sword/Shield, especially with its Dynamax effects. Being based on the same base code for the same system doesn't matter much if the new game adds new effects that require new shaders and new assets. If they could have simply copy/pasted the models from Let's Go without additional work, they certainly would have.

Pokémon is the third largest media franchise ever. No, it's not unreasonable to expect them to redo textures and bones for every Pokémon.

Anyone take the time on this?

This was actually one of the rare times I completed the Pokedex from scratch prior to the DLC coming out, which I didn't take the time on those two. Did have a fairly good team but it was definitely not online ready. Much of it reminded me of gen 2 stall and it quickly eroded my want to try this go round in comparison to the more offense-oriented gens.

I did at least get Master Ball rank in the one Battle Tower but not like that was hard with Dracovish lead or setup into sweep.

I think this is the first Pokemon game where I completed the (regional) Pokedex, and I believe it is due to how much they streamlined the process of finding Pokemon. With trade evolutions appearing in the Wild Area, I only ever had to trade for version exclusives. The Pokedex tells you exactly where to go to find the Pokemon you haven't caught yet (if you know of them). While I feel like all of this convenience sorta loses some of the magic of evolving certain Pokemon, it was still satisfying to complete the Pokedex.

Of course, this was before the DLC came out. Even though I pre-ordered the DLC, I lost interest before it released and didn't even try it until months later. I like most of the new legendary Pokemon, but I have no interest in filling two more Pokedexes.

Of all the wonderful character designs, my favorite is (surprisingly) Piers. He has such a fun concept and wild design, it's just a shame that the game doesn't bring his full potential. A singer with no actual singing or even music? Come on, Game Freak, even Black 2 / White 2 had singing for Roxie and her band.

I feel my initial impressions of the game unfortunately came true. You can tell that a lot of love went into designing the world, the characters, the Pokemon, and the story. The ideas they came up with have a huge amount of potential, but they couldn't tap much of it in their rushed development. There are plenty of very visually-interesting locations, hampered by sometimes-unimpressive graphical assets and engine limitations. There are places that would be perfect for exploration, except most places are very linear. The main characters have development, but their arcs resolve quickly at the end. The setting of a huge sports league mixing with ancient folklore could have been great, but the plot ends up feeling rushed and contrived.

The game is a lot more interesting than X/Y, but I really think they should have taken another year or so to develop it. Not to add more old Pokemon, just to flesh everything out.

Yea, a DLC that basically was all about 'capture every legendary' didn't really strike me as much as the Wild Area did in the original release of the game. I was in that place for HOURS at a time because of how open-ended it was and what you could do to a certain point until you had no choice but to get a gym badge just to get to the next step of the area. It was actually ironic just how much the gyms themselves gated off new content worse than any other title in that respect.

It's also why I like the direction of such ROM Hacks like Crystal Clear for being as open-ended as they are for order and content. Let me do what I want in the way I want. I think they've been getting better about that in the series over time, though (HMs being removed, TMs being infinite, etc.).

Just home D/P remakes later on this year are better than I expect. I haven't beaten that generation short of HG/SS. Fourth gen is the only one in the series of handhelds that I've snubbed after three attempts.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
