so, SMF 2.1 looks good so far, aside from the fact the default theme is terrible on mobile, it mostly reminds me of someone just adding the viewport tag and not doing much else

while that isn't exactly the best way to start it, since this is tame compared to a lot of things nowadays... heh

User CP -> Edit Options -> Other Options (bottom right) -> uncheck "Show friendly redirect pages."

i've been using MyBB for a little over 10 years now, so i know the ins n outs pretty well

some websites use the text after the # (hashtag) as client-side navigation (meaning the JavaScript itself handles the loading of the right content)

now the problem is, when the JavaScript breaks, you can't view an archived or cached version of the website because A. it's generated on the client and B. archivers don't consider the stuff after the # because they think that that's just navigation

this wouldn't be a big issue if that website didn't have the documentation for an API that I needed to use. but it did

welcome to how Hipsterscript breaks simple things that have always worked, like archiving pages.

sometimes even something as simple as saving a copy of the page can be a trainwreck.

like, there's that code/text pasting site, that, if you save a page from it and load that page locally, the text container in it is given display:none for some ass-idiotic reason. is the developer giving you the finger or just happening to be incompetent? go figure.

Modern web design is absolute garbage. Just the other day I was on a website for an enormous company, and as soon I loaded their terrible webapp, it told me I was offline, and wouldn't be able to use the site. Meanwhile, assets continued loading in the background.

Imagine the audacity of being a web designer, and writing that message in. How dare you tell me I'm offline, when I had to be online to see the damn message in the first place! And as if that annoying nag message weren't enough, it was a full screen overlay that disabled everything until it recognized that I was online. i have no idea what the criteria for being online is, though, as I set my phone down and came back a few minutes later to find it was working. What a joke.

a while ago I was checking my patreon, loaded the login page, which took its sweet time because shitty internet

anyway, the form loaded, with the fields and login button and all... except the login button was a fucking throbber

and eventually, later, the actual login button came

but, what kind of hipsterscript fuckery do you have to do that the login button requires separate fancy loading

My favorite is when the content loads just fine, then disappears or redirects to a message saying it needs JavaScript to work. I can clearly see it doesn't. Or some pages have everything set to 0% opacity and use a script to fade it in. Not only is that completely unnecessary, it can be done with CSS alone.

I've taken to doing a lot of my web browsing in lynx. Without CSS and javascript, the web is a nicer place. Yeah, some websites don't work, but I was surprised how many still do. And they look waaaay better than in Firefox.

Massive chunky-size page elements. I get that mobile web is a thing now, but come on, user agents are also a thing. If I have a mouse, I should be able to have reasonably sized, space efficient web pages, not these bloated, ad-infested pieces of garbage that only show three or four things on a single screen. Maybe it's better at 1920x1080, I don't know, but even zooming out doesn't really solve the problem, it just makes the elements more spaced out.

I'm noticing that whenever I use web twitter on my phone (because I refuse to use the app and Twidere doesn't load replies properly anymore) that page elements are constantly jumping up and down. I try and click on something and whoops, it jumped up halfway across the screen right before I clicked. And then I'm stuck going back and forth between screens and then whoops, new Tweets, gotta show those!

all of my other gripes with modern web design are negligible compared to infinite scrolling

what a great fucking way to bloat memory usage and then guarantee you lose your place when the page inevitably has to be refreshed

i frigging loathe how you can't go on the internet today without being prompted with a million things about whether you accept cookies (maybe this is an EU thing), and then tons of ads and stuff. it's like the early 2000s all over again but worse because we're on even smaller devices. my phone has become basically useless. i don't even mind a lot of modern design per se, but also browsers have become bloated as a consequence.

i generally try to keep my number of tabs to a minimum now and my browser closed as much as possible.

i actually took at look at this rym redesign you're talking about and compared to some of the other redesigns i've seen it's not bad??? it's more or less the old design but with a new coat of paint. im surprised that site went looking like Craigslist 2 up until this year tbh. i don't use rym often but this looks mostly harmless to me.

now, DeviantArt Eclipse, on the other hand... 😷
