Since I've switched to using Pale Moon full time and LastPass doesn't have a current XUL version, anyone have any recommendations for a password manager?

To start, I would recommend never storing passwords on someone else's computer (the cloud).

As for password management software (not an extension), KeePassXC works the best for me. Good interface, mobile-compatible, stores everything in a protected file. When you copy a password, it'll disappear from your clipboard after around 10 seconds so it's not just lingering.

I used to store my password in Google and Firefox's sync services but that just meant if my Google account's security was to be breached, I'd lose all my accounts with it.

I don't use any browser extensions regarding passwords. in fact I have password saving disabled on my browser, though I do keep myself logged in for convenience

in terms of extensions, uBlock Origin is the best adblocker I guess

why do you want something that's specifically a browser extension?

if you want something that'll automatically plug your stuff into a browser, vanilla KeePass2 (wouldn't know about KeePassXC) can do that (called Auto-Type, i think). but i also don't think it's necessarily a very good idea unless you understand the nature of the security risks and how to keep your eyes out for phishing.

really i think the best thing for most people is to copy+paste and have it auto-clear the clipboard

(other than typing manually every time, but if you're like me you have 400 million passwords and they're all pretty difficult and time-consuming to type and harder to remember)

There's always the spectrum between security and convenience, and it's all up to the user where they lie. Full convenience would be a cloud password manager, full security would be memorizing them. I think one of the KeePass variations is a safe middle-ground.

I was asking about browser extensions because they came up when I was researching KeePassXC, but they don't seem worth it now.

Auto-Type inputs your username and password by sending keypresses when you activate it from the menu (or through a global hotkey if it recognizes the url and/or title bar), so it doesn't carry the risk that autofill has. It's probably still not as safe as pasting and auto-clearing but if it works properly it's more convenient than having to bring up the window every time you input a password (at least KeePassXC can minimize to the system tray).

The biggest advantage to a password manager IMO is the ability to create strong passwords without having to memorize them, and to keep many different passwords rather than using the same or similar ones which can be a big risk if one site you're using is hacked or breached.

I'm also big on privacy so I don't stay logged in and clear everything when I close Pale Moon.

I've got to disagree here. I think not having your password manager integrated with your browser makes you an easier phishing target. Observe:

Scenario A: Alice uses a password manager with a browser extension enabled. She goes to her favorite website, consoto.com, every day and lets the password manager remember the password for her. It also associates the password with consoto.com. One day, she receives a link from consanto.com, and tries to have her extension log in for her. It does not recognize the site, and so does not log her in. Confused, she looks for an answer and realizes she's being phished.

Scenario B: Bob uses an offline password manager that does integrate with his browser. He visits his favorite website, consoto.com, every day, and manually pastes the password into the browser when he wants to log in. One day, he receives a link from consanto.com, and pastes his password. Of course, it doens't work, and he soon realizes he's been phished, but maybe something happened before he could change his password, and now his account is compromised.

So I guess my point is: Browser extension seem a bit odd on the surface because they autofill for you, but really since they are harder to trick than you are, it's actually beneficial to use them.

The probability of these getting breached is between very low to zero. Could it be just me who is under this impression?

for the past couple years i've been using Bitwarden for my passwords. it's really nice. it encrypts and decrypts client-side with your master password, and you can login anywhere through its web client. you can even self-host it if you're that paranoid.

the password generator is nice, it integrates well with iOS and Android, and like KeePass, you can sort logins into groups, as well as set up which URIs it will suggest the password on, even down to the match detection. i like it

i stopped using KeePassXC because i couldn't stand syncing the database file between my devices, and eventually just started putting it in my google drive after a while, which kinda defeated my original purpose (cloud bad!)

well let's scroll through it... online stores, art and social websites that i mostly haven't used in forever, music-related, more stores, a bunch of misc FTP logins and emails, game logins, healthcare/insurance/government/bank/other bullshit websites for grown ups, more game sites, domain registrars, streaming services (i don't pay for em. i only leech em off other ppl), some more forums...

i got a lot of confidence in these considering none of the passwords are used more than once. as big a privacy concern is by having accepting all these privacy policies, they've most definitely done a terrible job triangulating who i am, concerning how many personality changes i go through on a seasonal basis.
