It's weird; in my 20-so years of playing games I've come across a handful of interesting quirks, usually in more major release titles, that nobody else appears to have really noted within the community (or at least not catalogued in a forum thread, yet)

Just now, in ACNL, I've discovered that one can buffer bees from stinging you by switching tools, so in the event someone doesn't have their net (or not handy when needed), it's possible to switch tools really quickly, causing the swarm to back off a little bit each time. It's also possible to move around, perhaps 2-3 frames at a time when doing this, so it's possible to save oneself from getting stung if they can either clear enough distance where they can then attempt using the net, or finding shelter to duck into.

I mean it's nice, but in no way is this necessarily helpful, unless one's so early in the game where medicine isn't available, and even then, it's a temporary status effect. Completely useless, but interesting!

So, by that logic, what have you guys found over the years that is so useless (or maybe not so useless, like the "infinite loops" in certain, poorly-programmed enemies in Digimon World 1; a frame-perfect button mash into the in-game menu and an auto-pilot can help someone escape these, but then again DW1 is... semi-obscure? Hidden, albeit glitch-filled gem, to be sure)

In Pokemon Red/Blue, in Cerulean Cave, there's a ladder that leads you to a space where you're blocked by rocks to the north, west, and south. You can actually walk one tile onto the southern rock. Doing so has absolutely no consequence, it's just silly.

speaking of ACNL, if you use a megaphone on the island,
it says "seems like it's getting feedback"

the thing is, under noral circumstances, you can't get a megaphone on the island
the only way to get one is to hack your save and put one on the ground
it's also a different message from using the megaphone on main street or in the happy home showcase,
which, iirc, just says "you can't use the megaphone here"

so, they put a special message in,
for when you go to a place where you shouldn't have a particular item,
and use that item there anyway

Recently I found out you can cheese the final Joan D'Arc mission in Age of Empires 2. For context, you start with a large army, are meant to take out part of Burgundy in the middle of the map and make a base there. If you instead take your army to their undefended base in the south corner and level that, then wait for Burgundy's army to walk over and take that out easily, they will resign entirely.

I don't think this part was new, but it also turns out you can build a dock and transports from there directly past most English defenses. Since you win by taking a specific unit to some hill the campaign ends a bit oddly.

Edit: wait you said useless...I think I know of some, but not right now?

In Super Mario Sunshine, during the Wiggler fight, if you hit the map button (Z) as the music is speeding up or slowing down, then it stays like that until you exit the map screen.

In Pac-Man 2 - The New Adventures, if there are ghosts on the screen while Pac-Man is extremely happy or extremely depressed, he will completely ignore them. Normally, they're supposed to scare Pac-Man away, but his mood is so extreme on both cases that he doesn't even bother with them. On the SNES version, the ghosts will eventually get tired and go away, but on the Genesis version they'll stay until you leave the screen and come back.

In Densha de GO! 64, sometimes the voices will change pitch at random during an entire stage. I still don't know exactly what dictates it.

There's probably more that I don't remember.

Something I noticed a long time ago that's really pointless to know is that MKDS's emblem editor, when selecting through the list of characters to display on the top screen, is sorted by the character ID.

In Rayman Raving Rabbids for the DS (which is surprisingly decent compared to the Wii version, IMO), it's possible (and quite easy) to clip through water. I think you just have to hug a wall that the water meets up with while you jump in and out, but it's been years since the last time I tried so IDK.

In this state (IIRC), you can walk underwater, which is a bit silly and pointless. However, if you jump out of the water, you'll start swimming through the air. Unfortunately you can't beat levels like that, but it's still neat.

In Star Fox 64, the head lights for Granga (Corneria boss) and the weak point lights for the Attack Carrier (other Corneria boss) are made using the "Good Luck!" sign texture seen on buildings earlier in the level.

In Portal, if you go far enough off the intended track to encounter the void, you'll get an odd, thermal-camera-like rainbow effect across the void, which I believe corresponds to the edges of any geometry adjoining it.

in stunt race fx, the treads of the tires of each vehicle are not polygonal, but sprite-based, so they update at 60fps instead of the 2 the game runs at

also unrelated but the title screen is still a banger and one of the strongest snes title screens

At least in the PC version of Mega Man X7 (but I doubt the PS2 on is much different) in Wind Crowrang's stage's indoors section, if you approach the exit of the machine room the machinery sounds stop but you're not yet past a one-way invisible wall. If you then go back the sliding textures on the machine geometry has stopped as well.

I very much doubt that the PS2 one doesn't do this but I've not checked.

in phantasy star 3, if you sell your boots at the beginning and buy an escapipe, you can use it to escape the dungeon you're thrown into. the developers caught this exploit, and the kings breaks the fourth wall if you talk to him and tell you to reset the game

In Super Mario Sunshine, the Shadow Mario you see in the intro cutscene to Episode 1 of Bianco Hills is actually a disguised Boo. I guess the developers didn't have a way to make Shadow Mario just stand around for only the cutscene, so they just used a Boo disguised as Shadow Mario like in Episode 7 of Sirena Beach.

In Star Fox Adventures, the SharpClaw Disguise has a few odd (probably unintended) effects:

  • The gas in the CloudRunner Fortress power chamber won't hurt you.

  • When rescuing the LightFoot at Cape Claw, one of the enemies won't attack you, but you can't hurt him either.

the turbografx-16 ports of space harrier and after burner2, developed by nec avenue, have connections to dempa's ports of those games to the x68000. both the x68000 and turbografx-16 ports of space harrier contain striped floors rather than the usual checkerboard, and the turbografx-16 port of after burner 2 is compatible with the micomsoft (dempa's parent company) xe-1ap analog controller, itself an adaptation of the x68000's flight stick.

in strider, getting hit by a wolf in the second half of stage while on an incline next to the left side of the screen will cause hiryu to continue tumbling against the left side until jump is pressed. this only happens in the arcade and x68000 versions

System Shock 2 has a functional (enough) basketball halfcourt on the recreation deck.

In the original release, due to a bug, that was about as far as you could progress! It was fixed in the patch that added multiplayer.
