I know I brought the topic up on IRC at one point and some people seemed to know a few, but I never actually got any links, so I might as well throw up a thread!

Anyway, I'm looking for android resources, such as sites that hosts apps both from the app store as well as other ones (preferably with some good information). I'm mainly looking for software here, not games, but any good sites and resources would be appreciated. I kinda find the swamp of mobile stuff hard to sift through for the tiny bits of gold in it. V.v

Some recommendations for a good anti-virus for android would also be appreciated, frankly I don't trust apps on the app store with a ten foot pole, even less so if they promise security.

F-Droid is a nice open source app repo. There's not a lot of great apps on it, but it's worth checking there before the official store, since you can be reasonably sure they won't be bullshit.

I don't bother with antivirus on Android. I don't think there's any traditional malware on the app store, There is a lot of really privacy invasive and annoying trash, but I don't think there's anything that can catch that. I've found you can usually get a feel for how sketchy an app is by how many permissions it asks for. Something that only asks for permissions that make sense is typically going to behave nicer than an app that asks for everything.

if you're looking to pirate android apps, you can search for apk piracy or something along those lines. reddit probably has the answers

other than that I highly recommend NewPipe. it's the best youtube client that you can get on either F-Droid or GitHub. no ads, no accounts, background play, downloading, i sound like I'm advertising. but really NewPipe is the best android app in my opinion, I wish I could get something like it on desktop
