"Fandoms" and I really don't get along at all, I've learned. I was involved in anime fandom during the late 90's/early 2000's, including going to conventions in cosplay, but it just gradually became less enjoyable and more of a dumpster fire each passing year. And I'm not going to rag on just the anime scene, because I hear similar problems with every other fandom out there. Star Wars, DnD, steampunk, Marvel, Harry Potter... if you can name it, then it has a fandom with SOME sort of blemish or poison that sort of ruins the experience for me.

I'm still a fan of anime, but I don't get heavily involved in the fan activities, and that's kind of how I've approached every other nerd interest since then. I consider myself a "Dudeist", but I'm not a big enough fan of The Big Lebowski to want to get into the whole "Achiever" scene or go to any of the Lebowskifests. If I were to ever put money down on a convention, excluding Dragon*Con since that's local for me (and even then, I haven't went in about six or eight years), it'd probably be something like MAGfest or any kind of classic gaming convention, but even then I'm not sure I'd enjoy myself unless I went with a group of people I knew really well.

I spend a lot of time on r/FireEmblem and r/FireEmblemHeroes I guess...? It's pretty much how I spend most of my online free time.

I think that probably counts. I probably wouldn't go to a meetup or something, though.

I'm pretty deep into furry stuff by now, but otherwise not that I can think of? There's a few things I like and would probably describe myself as a fan of, but I don't participate in any fandom stuff. In addition a lot of games I play are amateur, so there's never many people who play them in the first place.

To be honest, it feels like I've stopped doing a lot of stuff.

Also, game shows, I suppose. Mostly old ones, such as Dawson/Combs Family Feud, Press Your Luck, Card Sharks, Match Game, and the like. Some newer shows, like the UK version of The Chase, are good as well.

its probably just a form of nostalgia but what can you do.
there's a small community of people who are interested in it,
and theyve done stuff as drastic as, like,
creating a fully functional software simulation of one of the weather channel's cable headend systems

it's just really cool, imo.

Hell no. Being an outside observer that mines the fandom for content is a far better experience than trying to engage in a single point of media type of community.


Idk a fandom in its early days is the best, lots of fun and energetic people. But as time goes on, the amount of downers and non-contributing members tend to take over every aspect of the fandom until all the powerhouse creatives and so on leave for their next interest leaving the fandom empty and without much fuel to keep things going, and without that things turn boring pretty fast.
