Just wondering.

I consider myself to kind of be a furry as of a few days ago, after finally opening up about really enjoying the artwork made, and I generally find the community is a rather relatable and friendly bunch. Plus I loved animals since I was like four, and while I'm no vegetarian I still care for things like welfare, etc (part of the reason I'd prefer to get my food from separate shops like the old days).

Any of you in any kind of fandom? Care to talk about it here? ^^

Not really, at least as far as feeling included goes. There are things I'm interested in, but I don't "belong" to anything. I draw fandomy things, but I do my stuff in the margins and most people don't notice me.

ive flipflopped back and forth on the question "am i a furry" over the years
and in the past two or so the answer ive firmly landed on is "very yes"
i even went to midwest furfest this past december and it was amazing
furries are such a blast to be around, everyone's having fun and friendly and it just, lifted my spirits like nothing else

beyond that, a pretty big chunk of the people i keep up with on twitter are big kingdom hearts fans, as am i
and i sorta-kinda participate in a twitter-based undertale/deltarune rp circle
(as muffet, mostly, but i have a rouxls kaard account and a papyrus too)
i got into it kind of accidentally, because i snagged @bonetrousle as a twitter username
same with @rouxlskaard, i was a sneaky lil shit and grabbed it during the 24 hour embargo
(though i didn't populate it with an avatar or any tweets til after it was over)

I've never known what "fandom" even means honestly -- I have a lot of interests and hobbies, some of them have something to do with fictional characters, and I share them with some friends. Do I qualify?

Fandom basically means that you follow something very strongly and is almost like a popularised version of a cult following in a sense...

Depends. Furries mostly refers to anthropomorphic characters, like the one in your avatar. You can ask yourself: "Do I like them as characters? Do I see myself as one? Would I prefer to use one as my avatar, profile picture, or online persona? Would I wear a fursuit?" Etc.

You should probably look it up to be sure, because I don't know enough about it to say (I'm not a furry), I'm just guessing. Unless that post was sarcastic in which case damn, I got bamboozled.

Not sure if I'm part of any fandom really, there's not really anything that I follow religiously. Maybe trains. Probably trains actually, they're just cool all around. Transportation in densely populated cities is an interesting thing to solve and trains are a cool way to solve it, much better than buses or cars.

I've also spend a long time in the Pokémon fandom, although that's so broad... I like small friendly communities in general and if there's an unifying interest the better.

a loose definition of "fandom" is basically just being part of a community focused on a certain thing (a game, series, whatever) as opposed to just. general things. if you find yourself regularly talking with the same-ish group of people about a certain thing, you might be part of a fandom


in that sense, i'm not part of any particular fandom. i like some things, but i don't follow them or participate in discussions about them or anything

there's three types of things i'm a fan of:

- stuff that's been dead for at least 10 years or more
- stuff that's alive but the people involved are really stupid, like holy hell
- stuff where i'm way too shy to interact with the community in any meaningful way because they seem too nice/smart/cool for me

so basically i'm not really a part of any fandoms. i'm registered on PureZC, but that's more of a fangame development community than a zelda fandom website (and i don't really... participate in the community there much anymore, anyway). i don't really love the zelda fandom, so i doubt i'd join an actual website for zelda fans or anything.

meanwhile i was hugely adjacent to the ace attorney fandom at one point and used to lurk court-records, but that's... both more dormant than it used to be and also i'm way too shy to get involved. same deal with the radiohead fandom, although they're actually more lively on reddit than they've been in a long time. i guess i've posted on /r/radiohead a couple times, but not often...

then there's the weird shit i like like PSG (dead as a doornail unless imaishi rescues us from our pit of despair -- i've scoured for fics and fanart but actually most of it's just not amazing) or nichijou (has an adorable tiny fandom that i used to lurk and look at memes from, but was too shy to join + felt way too old compared to everyone else involved) or sweet trip (not big enough for a fandom, disbanded anyway) or unwound (same deal, maybe slightly more popular but still long dead) or...

then there's plenty of stuff i *like* but wouldn't get involved in a fandom. stuff like idk smash bros where i'm just casually into them but not really an obsessive who always needs more (never even really looked at smashboards for anything that's not a guide)



on the topic of being a furry: i'm not really a furry, i don't have a sona and wouldn't be interested in making one or really rp'ing or getting embedded in the broader culture. but there's a lotttt of anthro artists i really really like and that i follow and i've always been really furry-adjacent/have a lotttt of furry friends. like for every non-fur friend i have i'm pretty sure i have two fur friends lol

I think most that do remember wish that they could forget.


As for the actual topic, I wouldn't really say that I am in any fandoms per say? My interests shift wildly back and forth, and saying that I am into "anime" or "games" feels too broad to really be able to count as a fandom.

I used to be pretty heavily into Touhou a few years back (as evidenced by the layout I haven't changed in forever), but I think the rapid pace of new releases of games combined with not as much interest in their directions kind of took away most of my energy for it.

Not really part of any fandoms, though I followed / lurked various "communities" without partecipating much.

The first big one for me (mid 2010?) was the "malware community" with danooct1 and/or rogueamp. Videos where interesting and in early 2012 I started following rogueamp as well (who at the time wasn't posting videos). I lurked on MalwareUp II, and then the danooct1 forums.
The fact that I keep a pretty big malware collection on my external HD says everything about this.

I also more or less follow the Sonic (hacking) community mostly around Sonic Retro & SSRG, respectively from 2012and 2013.
