I decided to make a thread on computer storage in general where you can talk about how you manage your computer(s) storage. Figured it might be interesting to know what you do for your setups.

Current config:
1TB Western Digital Blue HDD
- C:/ Windows 7 (OS + Documents)
- D:/ Games (Steam, Emulators, etc.)
- E:/ Softwares
- F:/ Downloads
- Debian with KDE 5 (unstable and mostly empty because I can't Linux, I need to replace it with another distro)
- Linux Swap (8 GB, maybe a bit too much?)

240GB Western Digital Green SSD
- Currently empty

I've always had a habit of partitioning my HDD into two drives for convenience's sake, but when I got this 1TB one I made a lot more partitions. I actually install all softwares on E: instead of C:, makes it easier to distinguish between stuff that comes with Windows and stuff that doesn't. Some softwares don't really like it though, like Thunderbird who can't update itself unless I run it as administrator (I believe this isn't an issue if you install it on C: instead, or if you disable User Account Control).

Now, I have a free copy of Windows 10 Pro thanks to my college, so I was thinking about installing it to try it out (and maybe later on move most of my stuff to it). I don't plan on replacing my Windows 7 installation anytime soon, but 7 only has a year of support left and after that it's probably going to suffer the same fate as XP. I better at least have the ability to switch between both of them.

That said I'm not sure what I should do with my new SSD yet. Should I:

1: Put Windows 10 Pro on the SSD. Use it for the OS, for personal documents and for swap memory;
2: Same as above, except let's not put swap memory there; or
3: Move Windows 7 to the SSD and install 10 on the HDD.

Or maybe you guys have some other recommendation?

I have a single 1TB WD HDD and I put everything on one partition.

I make backups pretty frequently.

(I don't have an SDD, either, so... I can't give any advice there.)

Julbench3.1  94% full, 55K free, 824K in use

Device 0: Samsung SSD 860 EVO, 250 GB. This holds Windows 7 Professional, my main OS, with some space on the drive used for the EFI system partition, and some more for over-provisioning.
Device 1: Western Digital Blue, 2 TB. My main drive for data of all kind, miscellaneous backups of ex. memory cards or sticks, as well as part of my Steam Library.
Device 2: Samsung SSD 840 EVO, 120 GB. This is now used exclusively by my Hackintosh macOS installation, and was previously used by Windows 7 before I got the 860 EVO when I last upgraded my system.
Device 3: Western Digital Blue, 2 TB. Same model of drive as Device 1 and a direct backup of that drive's contents, housed in an external USB 3.0 enclosure.
Device 4: Samsung HD103SJ, 1 TB. The main data drive before said upgrade, now also residing in an external enclosure instead.

In daily use are the 250 GB SSD and the internal 2 TB HDD, with most software and games residing on the SSD. I did start using the HDD for Steam games recently, because the SSD's been filling up. I should probably have a look at the stuff installed on here and see what's not really needed and can be kicked off of the SSD.

The 120 GB SSD and its Hackintosh setup isn't in use very often, I had initially just wanted to see if I could get it to work. Well, it does, pretty well too, but I'm just a bit more comfortable with Windows.

The external 2 TB and 1 TB HDDs are only switched on when needed, ex. if I need some data off of the 1 TB drive or if I'm backing up the internal 2 TB one's data to its external counterpart.

A friggin' mess. Network drive in this shot is an attached Raspberry Pi4, 4GB, running Recalbox that I've only started working on...so it still has a good amount of space on it.

It's been a couple of years and I never answered what I ended up going with in the end! oops

1TB Western Digital Blue HDD (WD10EZEX)
- sda1: Games (290GB / 400GB) (73%)
- sda3: Windows 10 (33GB / 129GB) (26%)
- sda5: Downloads (182GB / 300GB) (61%)
- sda6: Mint Backups (100GB)
- sda7: Swap Memory (2GB)

240GB Western Digital Green SSD (WDS240G2G0A)
- sdb2: Documents (73GB / 138GB) (53%) (/home)
- sdb4: Linux Mint (20GB / 86GB) (23%) (/)

Summary of changes include:
- No more Windows 7, replaced by 10*
- E:/ Softwares is gone. Windows softwares are now on Downloads, while Linux softwares are now on Games
- Debian w/ KDE 5 was a terrible idea and is also gone, replaced by Linux Mint w/ Cinnamon, now on the SSD

*I actually had 10 on the SSD for a while, then realized I wasn't using it at all, then moved it to the HDD

I thought about buying another SSD but right now I still have plenty of free space, specially considering I've been pretty bad at organizing my files lately. I may have to reorganize my HDD space due to how many games I have installed.

I use a laptop, with a maximum of 237 GB. I've got about 15 GB of free space left, though, since I have a lot of unfinished YouTube video projects on here that tend to be massive.

As for the specifics: Every file on my computer is located in a single massive folder called "misc" on my desktop. That's about it.

hey, i actually have more than one drive now on my desktop: 1 TB WD HDD for just general purpose storage, another 500GB seagate for music and torrent seeding and appdata and stuff like that, then a 500GB crucial SSD for my windows install and actual programs. i still find myself running out of space a surprising amount

i still don't partition stuff all that much. i'm using linux on my laptop and everything but /efi and swap is on sda3 /. no /home partition or anything like that. i probably could have used a /home partition, in hindsight.

maybe if i were using linux on my desktop i'd probably put /home on my WD, but i still dunno if i'd be willing to take that plunge yet

I don't
This laptop has a 16 gigabyte Haiku partition that is the only bootable partition, another 16gb pasrtition for Puppy Linux that the bootloader can't load that I keep around entirely because I want to archive it before I wipe the whole drive and install Windows 2000 or NT 3.51 or something, and theoretically a Windows XP 2419 partition except it has another copy of Haiku on it for recovering the first one. I have an external drive but I filled it up years ago. My desktop is slightly better and on its third hard drive installed at one time.

Id like to inform that in less than 3 years since i bought it, my SSD has now completely died. It is recognized as a different model, and GParted cannot make sense of it and thinks its a 16KB drive instead, while also throwing up plenty of errors. Apparently this is a somewhat common error where a critical part of the SSD dies out and the firmware then goes into panic mode as it cannot properly boot up anymore. It died very suddenly yesterday and brought both my OS and home partition with it. Ill be restoring from a backup in a few days. In the meantime Im running off of a live usb install of linux mint.

rest in pepperoni - 240GB Western Digital Green SSD (WDS240G2G0A)

Data drive? Steam drive? Probably. Sort of like why I got a Samsung QVO for the latter.

Further, the smaller the drive, the less chance it has to last for as long. That's something those larger SSDs tend to have going for it since it spreads out its wear across the drive so you end up getting better TBW. Might try jumping for a 500GB WD Blue / Black this go round and see if you get double the life out of it.

Well, good to know I guess! It was the first SSD I ever bought, back when I was still a student, so I did expect it to fail at some point I just didn't know it would be this abrupt. Usually with hard drives, I get a bit of a warning when things are going badly but this SSD didn't even report anything on S.M.A.R.T. when I checked it a few weeks ago, it just straight up died right then and there.

I just bought a Samsung EVO 870 after not only hearing about it for months now but also seeing the availability and prices online. I can refund it for free for 7 days if it turns out to be a bad purchase but I didn't hear any complaints online on anything except price. The WD Green actually died while still under warranty so I'll see if I can get either a replacement or a repair, and then I'll use it for storing programs and games.

Oh and on an unrelated note, I'm currently doing some server maintenance which is why my avatar probably will not load for a bit (unless it happens to be cached).

In my experience replacing them, and they are relatively few, that behavior is actually quite common. It's also a reason we mention that if there is something on there that you need to be sure and have a duplicate/backup handy due to the nature of how they fail.

The EVO line from Samsung isn't bad at all. Long-lasting and sports very good performance overall. Tends to be on the higher side of price but I've not had any complaints. I have an 840 from long ago that still works that is used for a bench machine at the office, a 120GB.

As for the warranty, if you can claim it, you may as well. Just be sure to note its limitations for use in the future. As long as you do with any given drive and what they expect you to use it for, you'll be fine with SSDs in general.

So the EVO 870 I received already has a "Not For Retail Sale" sticker on it, though everything inside the box looks fine.

Already going great I see! Welp. Sure hope this thing doesn't break because as far as I know that sticker means I'm not going to be able to file this one under any warranty whatsoever. Maybe that's why I was able to get it for not as steep a price as I was expecting.

Again, I still have until August 10th to return it at no cost and a full refund, so I have a bit of time to check...

I wouldn't worry about it. Those will last a good long time usually. Catastrophic rare acts aside, you should be fine.

I have a CF to IDE adapter in my Lombard and two CF cards to switch between Mac OS (16GB Transcend in three partitions, two of them ~6GB and the last one ~4GB -- planned to have Mac OS X 10.2 on one 6GB, X DP2 on another, and 8.1 on the final 4GB) and OpenBSD 7 (64GB SanDisk).

Up next on the list is my Sawtooth, Oddball. Oddball has a 112GB hard drive on normal IDE, with ~70GB for Mac OS 9, ~20GB for Mac OS X 10.4, and ~20GB for 10.5. It should probably be 70GB for Tiger and 40GB for OS 9 (or 20 for 9, 20 for Tiger, and 70 for Linux), but... hindsight.

After that is my iBook G3, it's cut up into a 22.5GB OS 9 partition and a 14.5GB Tiger partition.

Then my iMac G5, it has an 80GB hard drive with Linux on it.

The 2005 Quadrilogy are, in order from smallest to largest:
- PowerBook G4 Hi-Res (16GB Micro Center USB for the time being, will be a 256GB SSD with a 15GB Tiger partition, 55GB Leopard partition, and a 170GB Linux partition.)
- Dell Inspiron 2200 (40GB)
- iBook G4 (55GB FUJITSU MHV2060AT)
- PowerBook G4 1.5 (80GB hard drive)

I'm looking for a 64-bit PCI or PCI-X card to put in my G4 Quicksilver; that way I can get bootable SATA II speed and make better use of readily available SATA III SSDs. It's going to be my tortured OC subject, so I wouldn't want to bottleneck it with slow 66MB/s IDE speed. SiI3112 is the chip to look for, but apparently not one of the readily available cards with three chips for six total SATA ports.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
