I kinda figured it would be nice to have some cool games to play on my phone given that I yet again have one that could run things. So I figured having a thread for good phone game recommendations would be nice. There is a lot of garbage in the phone game market so actually finding good ones on your own without recommendations is next to impossible!

So if you know any good ones, feel free to plug them here. The only good one I know myself in Pokemon Go, but everyone knows about that one (it's pretty simplistic, but hey, anything that promotes exercising and walking around is a plus in my book).

Plus points:

+ Preferably no Gacha games, I feel gacha games generally cannibalizes anything interesting gameplay a game could have.
+ That it does not require an internet connection to play.


I feel there are enough Gacha games out there that if you want to play one of those, chances are you already are and know the good ones. I was gonna say that people can point out ones that they find exceptionally good, but usually how that goes is that any one that people get stuck on they feel emotional invested in considering exceptionally good, which is a bit disheartening and muddies discussion. :C


Edit: Oh yeah!

I tried Plant's vs Zombies 2 on my old, old phone, since I liked the first one when I played it on PC. But I recall that one being very underwhelming and kinda mediocre? Does anyone know if it gets any better?

PopCap games are on mobile devices? Huuuh. The only other device I remember playing, say, Zuma on, was Xbox 360.

Hanger for Android and iOS is good.

In terms of probably lesser-known stuff, DigRun is a pretty good action puzzle thingy. Might be a bit repetitive after a while, but it's fine in smaller doses; also it's not free, it's like one Euro/USD/etc. or something, tho I'd almost want to call that a good thing. Android here, iOS here.

Okay, I found out itch.io actually has a category for finding android games on it, and because it's itch.io you'll probably have some luck finding not-awful games there (though most do appear to be visual novels so YMMV)

And yes it's gacha but it's probably one of the nicer ones about it and isn't at all necessary to spend money on it. Though even easier would probably be Puzzles & Dragons.

i super super super recommend florence; it's probably not the kind of game you're talking about (i.e., replayability, staying power), but the straightforward yet incredibly relatable in an i've-been-there kind of way story it tells is delivered in a clever, kinetic way through its gameplay and left me in a sniffly mess in my car. takes about 30-45 minutes to go through



i've only played donut county, which i also highly recommend if you're into something not too dissimilar from katamari in terms of gaemplay philosophy (start small, get big). has some great writing and goofs if you're into characters who Talk Like Millenials

the rest of the games are all from the Hidden My Game By Mom lineage which i want to dive into at some point, some key things people have said about it have left me interested

hitman go is apparently pretty good too, a turn-based(?) puzzle game. have yet to dive in

i don't play many mobile games otherwise, usually i'm on a podcast or video if i'm out and about since that's an easier way for me to keep track on my surroundings

We've been playing Cosmic Express occasionally, which is a nice little geometry puzzle game about using a train to get aliens to their homes. There's some neat twists involving the way the constraints of the homes and the types of aliens interact. I think we've nearly got through the last constellation.

Canabalt HD is an old but good runner game about fleeing through an interminable city while behemoth robots battle it out in the background and occasionally not-so-background.

There's also the awfully charming DATA WING, which is a racing game about flying a little software agent through… well, I forget when you find out what the environment is, but it's got a charming backstory to it and a very fitting vaporwave soundtrack. Getting through the story mode is pretty easy (though there were a few levels we got stuck on for a while), but beating the high-level challenge times is hard.

I'd like to see the challenge of someone trying to suggest some good J2ME games - I have a W810i as a matter of fact that deserves some love...

If anyone has good examples (J2ME will work on a lot of devices, including Android and the PSP) I'd like to hear those suggested too!

What's J2ME?

Also I haven been trying a bunch of games that caught my interest on the app store, but so far most of those have been pretty trash. However! I do happen to know two good games that I should recommend:

Plague Inc: A few of you probably know about it, as it basically cloned the digital re-creation of Pandemic that was made many years ago. It's a pretty good game, you can pay for the full version but even the free version is pretty good. There are a few disease types that are locked behind a paywall as well as custom scenarios, an absurd extra hard difficulty mode, and some options to make the game easier. Honestly I find that pretty fair, given that you get to play a fully featured game.

Cat Bird: Found out about it because it was being run on AGDQ this year (only watched the first level). It's a pretty nice platforming game with a lot of the usual indie charm. It has none of the bullshit that you usually see in mobile games, it's just a straight up level based platformer that slowly introduces more gimmicks and ideas. Definitivly recommend! (The AGDQ run can be found here!)

Also it's cute as fuck. >w<

You might remember J2ME as the Nokia S40 line of phones (or the BlackBerry apparently), or the "feature phones" as they were called. Those were quite popular over here until we finally were able to afford smartphones. WhatsApp actually supported the S40 up until 2017 (I am so sorry for the dev team). Some games I remember playing a bunch include:

- Block'd. Basically Same Game but more hectic and fun, if you like puzzle games.
- Brain Challenge. Kinda nice collection of mini-games, don't take the results literally though.
- Diamond Rush. It's a fun little puzzle game too.
- Rollercoaster Rush. Drive a rollercoaster car around the course, go too fast and outta the tracks you go, go too slow and you'll bore everyone on the ride.

Man, it's been a few years since I last played these games. I guess ever since I switched to Android phones in late 2015 I never felt the need to go back.

You can emulate J2ME in a lot of Android phones as far as I remember, and even the PSP can do it.

I once posted on facebook from a W810i using their J2ME app, and even used Messenger, was quite fun.

One Android app that can run J2ME games is called "J2ME Loader"; I tried that one to revisit the only J2ME game I ever played, back on my W800i - Sonic Jump.



...although, well, the game's pretty simplistic, and doesn't control too well using a touchscreen in my opinion.

Well... I have Super Mario Run in mind.

Unless you don't wanna pay, the Bloons Tower Defense series is also a good mobile game that I'd suggest you try.

ive been enjoying this game, "curses 'n candies"
it's basically an arcadey sort of game,
where you have to defeat ghosts and monsters with a flashlight
it's free to play, and if you play it in airplane mode there's no ads
i found it easy to pick up how to play, but hard to master
still working on its new game+ mode, curse crusher
its on both ios and android for what its worth
