All of the links in IRC and such are HTTPS already; I don't want to redirect by default because older hardware often can't support (modern) HTTPS.

(Though making the login link explicitly take you to HTTPS might be good?)

seems like a good compromise would be setting a cookie on https, and if you have that cookie and aren't on https it redirects you there; devices that don't support it won't get it (since they can't connect anyway) and so on

I'd be wary of doing something by default like that in case you get into a situation where a client that doesn't understand it constantly pops up errors on each page; I actually ran into that very thing because the stats tracking code here pings a Piwik install over HTTPS (usually?) and it'd love to pop up "Failed to connect to xxx: SSL error" or whatever
