Yea so I turn 18 today. Still haven't processed that yet, but I like having rights as a person.

To all the adults here, how hard is it transitioning from kid to adult?

Worst fucking birthday I ever had to be honest.

I'd explain why, but it's not worth it.

Regardless, I only noticed the impact about 9 months later, when I finished High School and qualified for a particular pension - as Australia does for many youth.

Having money was completely insane!
I mean... I could just... have ten bucks spare? I could buy anything I wanted with that ten bucks??

I was a broke kid and teenager.

Anyway! Congrats! Welcome to the world of being able to say "Yes, I am 18+" to online forms.

I can't say it was a birthday that changed much for me, either - I was homeschooled and had been going to community college for ...two and a half years? Anyway, what with that change by comparison, going to university that fall wasn't Huge™ in my mind, even if I was staying in the dorms there instead of staying at home. Honestly, the bigger transition was discovering webcomics that December.

When I turned 18 my older sister came by with a shit-ton of cider as a present.

Then I spent the rest of that summer drinking cider and playing brawl with friends.

I can't say I felt like an adult, but it sure was rad.

I still don't really feel like an adult, and that happened 10 years ago.

It'll be fine, welcome to the part where you are unsure if you're an adult, or a kid, or whatever, it'll probably stay like that for a while.

I was going to say "Happy birthday, but also condolences", but I guess everyone else already did.

So instead, look forward to having more power, but also more responsibility, and never forget what got you where you are!

*nods*

I think I stopped feeling unsure and started feeling like an adult in my early thirties (i.e. a year or two ago - I'm still in my early thirties).

I hope you're not referring to my parents because they're narcisisstic pieces of shit who've only made me feel like a freak and a burden.

Oh hey, we were actually born just a few days apart! I'll be turning 18 in like three days. Happy birthday and stuff!

I've already had to deal with a lot of new responsibilities earlier this year, like how work works and how to handle money and other things, but a lot of other responsibilities will probably just gradually appear over time, so I don't think this changes much by itself. It feels less like "this is the day everything changes" and it's more like, there's a new chapter of my life that's starting I guess and everything is gradually changing with time.

Does it feel like the same thing to you?

eh, it's alright. can like, vote, I guess. and smoke in some states, but don't do that it's bad for your health.

(also go get a state ID they're useful so you don't have to get a pat-down every time you go through TSA)

...and dear lord you people here are young, I've always been the youngest person in every community I've been and some people here aren't even 18 yet <_>

Oh, thing which I wish I had gotten on top of earlier (not that I'm on top of it now): finding a way to get around to all the every-few-months things every few months instead of never/randomly. I have a phone reminder that goes off every month to tell me to make a credit card payment and another that goes off every two months to tell me to change the furnace filter, frex.

Happy birthday!

Becoming an adult is really more of a process. Nothing special happened to me when I turned 18. It was really the gradual shift in responsibilities over the following years where I started taking care of myself but also making important decisions on my own and figuring out who I really was as a person and who I wanted to be. Honestly, I still don't feel like I'm really "there" yet even though I'm 25, but I've made a lot of progress. I definitely don't feel like a kid anymore, anyway.

Everyone goes through that process differently, though, so I can't say how it'll be for you. It can certainly be very difficult, though, but I think it's worth the effort. Good luck!

...

Gosh, you people are young.

re: the last bit, most people have been here since they were in their late teens lol

or on previous acmlmboard incarnations, majority joined at the age of around 15-18 and then formed a strong bond throughout the years that has been up and down but always there

i'm probably the youngest active user tho tbh
