| This whole thing makes me sick -- feels like we're heading for some point of no return at an ever-increasing rate... But like (probably) most of this place, I've no means to leave. |

Originally posted by Rambly I would argue that Trump is also a sociopath and that everyone who supports him is a fascist, but at that point what's the difference?
I felt physically ill when I first read it and was lucky to get back to sleep. Not terribly unlike the day the results of the election hit, actually ____________________ (Lv 244 with 229378359 EXP) |

Originally posted by XkeeperIt didn't really give me the same anxiety/dread feelings. I think because I saw something like this as an inevitability as far back as 2016. Mostly, right now, I just feel fucking angry. I know I'm probably relatively safe, but what about all of the trans girls who live in red states who don't have any state protections? Is their right to exist, to work, to shelter, to use the goddamned restroom, to not be subject to senseless acts of violence, to live, etc. suddenly a point of negotiation? Why? On what grounds? Aesthetic ones? Some ill-defined notions of what right and wrong are? On what cynical grounds beyond humanity? I feel furious at anyone who argues right-wingers' rhetoric for them. I feel furious at their crypto-Fourth Reich bullshit. I feel furious at the bloodlust that I know exists in some peoples' hearts, and I feel furious at their lack of empathy. I feel furious at anyone who could possibly take a middling stance on the right of a person to exist. I feel furious at anyone who doesn't feel something in their heart sink at the suggestion that some people don't have value. It doesn't goddamned matter if it's about gay people, or trans people, or people of color, or disabled people, or anyone. It doesn't matter if concentration camps aren't literally spawning. We all know what the machine of capitalism does to people who are disenfranchised. We all know what the purpose is. And we all know what the subtext is. I am angry. ____________________ |

| What's next, I know: segregation of the LGBTQ people and sending them to concentration camps? I honeslty wouldn't be surprised if that happened This is absolutely pathetic though... legal discrimination at its fucking finest. ____________________ Polythene, Polythene Girl, wrap me up in a cellophane world~ |

Originally posted by JamieI don't think we're at that point. Not because Trump and his cronies wouldn't want that (they'd love if they could do that), but because he probably couldn't get away with that even with how absolutely fucked up our political system is. There's really no legal cause for something like that. Lord knows he's been trying with immigrants. Our system of law is extremely broken, but as long as we have a system of law there'll be people at judicial levels working to protect civil rights. I doubt anything like banning HRT or concentration camps is going to come of this, but states without legal protections (rights to employment, housing, restroom usage, etc.) probably aren't going to have any protections at the federal level anymore if this passes. That's scary enough, especially for anyone in a relatively conservative part of the country. Not everyone has the resources to just up and leave their state of residence for a nice blue bubbley one, especially given that those states tend to be more expensive to live in. All it takes is a lack of access to employment to fuck over a lot of trans people in a world where parents can be unsupportive and kick their kids out. The scary thing isn't that trans people are gonna be rounded up and put in camps, the scary thing is that a lot of trans people are going to have their livelihoods ruined, possibly being forced into homelessness and worse. That said, I believe that the distinction between genocide and ostracization from a capitalist society hardly matters in practice -- the intent is clearly there, people will be hurt as a result of this, and the complete lack of value this administration assigns to trans people as human beings is evident. The psychological ramifications of knowing that the ultimate authority someone lives under wants them to not exist, that probably their more local authorities are broadly in support of and will look to enforce in areas like the public school system, are horrible, particularly for young people. And statements like this from the Trump administration only serve to empower the world's worst bullies. (The idea that the federal government is even suggesting genetic evidence can be used as a means to determine sex has horrifying implications, too.) All of this is an extremely good reminder of why you should be voting if you can. In midterms, in state and county and municipal elections, primaries, ballot initiatives, everywhere. Local elections might seem like they don't matter that much, but state protections offer a pretty good cushion for a lot of people, and today's state representatives are tomorrow's U.S. senators and the next day's executive leaders. Donate to grassroots organizations that support LGBT rights and civil rights in general if you can. (not the ACLU, they suck butt) ____________________ |

Taking away basic rights and protections from trans people would be a pretty clear-cut human rights violation, not to mention blatant discrimination.Originally posted by hydra-calm I don't think any of us can afford to leave the planet...not that doing so would help. ____________________ See my post above? | The Trump administration at this point is surely a great example of right wing, "I pretend to care" idiocy. It was like that from the start but this is pretty much the tipping point for it all. As I said in my previous post, it shouldn't just be what all the big people in authority want personally but what people want and for society to move forward we need to be forward thinking, Trump's administration is the most backwards there's been in a long time considering it's America (I'm not really counting typical dictator countries here) |
