Twitter started doing this to me where they send me notifications saying "In case you missed [person]'s tweet" and "[person] liked/retweeted this". I had e-mail set up so I would know when it notified me, so I could go like "oh someone has interacted with something I said, better check on it to see if it's anything important". These are not notifications. If I wanted to see someone else's tweets, I'd go to their freaking profile! STOP DOING THIS.

I've considered using Twitter (as an announcement platform for my work), but features like that would most certainly annoy me. I'm already annoyed that they don't give me an option to turn off the random recommendations.

Twitter has made itself extremely unpalatable for me now they've changed the order of the timeline, disabled third party apps (mostly, through API support), and now forces people with different views into your timeline.

I'm stuck in the perpetual addict mode of "always quitting tomorrow"... I block 99% of this sort of thing, but I'm sure that won't be possible forever.

i feel like Twitter's addictiveness is by design

like, it (and facebook which is even worse about it) tries to keep you constantly Engaged with notifications for every little thing. and its format encourages rapid consumption of junk foody filler posts. even like the way the little heart animates when you like tweets reminds me of dopamine releasey stuff like flashing lights + sounds at casinos

basically, twitter has a very low barrier of entry -- requires very little effort to use -- yet keeps you feeling constantly stimulated. i feel like it's become the new lucrative brain rotting crap thing like TV was for people in the 90s

i hope i don't sound like a crazy person or an old person lol

you could prolly make a case for twit+facebook being really fucking annoying w/ bombardment being a habit forming strategy too

like. it starts pushing those crap notifications when you start to use the site less. and if it ropes you in long enough to try to find the setting that disables the annoying notifications, the format is such that it might manage to get you reading a couple tweets, then reading a couple more, and...

That is most certainly an intentional design choice. I've seen a few articles about it earlier this year, with some talking about the negative effects this has on the mental health of its users.

I've stopped going on both twitter and facebook far less in favor of using tumblr.

It's still a social network and it certainly comes with many of the issues, but the fact that I can actually get a feed that is purely the things posted by the blogs I follow in chronological order is very refreshing.

There's no "check out this post we think you like" in the middle of the feed, and neither is there "your friend pressed like on this post" or similar.

I can actually go on tumblr, scroll for a few minutes, and then reach a post I've already seen, and when I do, I know that I am done, finished, cleared. Scrolling more won't get me more stuff suddenly, so then I can leave tumblr, and check in maybe 5 hours later, and spend a few more minutes until I once again am caught up with my whole feed.

Am I spending a lot of time on it? Indeed, but at least it isn't time spent searching for the next time the algorithm manages to give me a hit of the "good" stuff.

Twitter, as a website, is only bearable if you uBlock and Stylus the living daylights out of it - remove "xyz and abc liked" tweets, sponsored tweets, trends, "who to follow" and co., revert dumb presentation changes (square avatars, damnit), etc.

I don't use Twitter on mobile much, but I do use a third-party client, namely Twidere, when needed. It doesn't notify me of likes, only replies, and gives a 100% chronological timeline (doesn't even group tweets into threads), tho I wouldn't be surprised if some of what I see as features of the app, is actually the result of API limitations.

I still use Twitter in general, despite all of this, despite the psychological tricks to keep you "engaged", because of the people I'm following and the people who follow me. I couldn't care less about the things Twitter wants me to do or "engage" with, I'm doing the best I can to bend their service to work the way I want it to.

Eventually, all that will fail. Eventually, they will impose their will and their content onto us, regardless of what we want, with no way of turning it off, or patching it out. Then, I'll jump ship as well, since I'm (hopefully!) not that stupid.

They do have that feature, but it seems to only appear under certain conditions. Perhaps the reason I see it so often is because I only follow two people. They used to have an option to turn it off... but of course, they removed it.

I'm pretty sure it's only set to attack irregular users - I used Tumblr once in a blue moon and I'd get a lot of those posts when I did, but on the very occasional period where I was using it regularly it'd stop doing that.

Of course, tumblr is another social network that I cleared out of my accounts.

my favorite thing about forums is you can do so many interesting things with the format

even if you're not on a forum with HTML, you can do some pretty neat things using only text, too! for instance, check this out:

i'd have used tumblr but i never got in with any sort of community there (none of my friends used it) and it seemed like everyone that used it was 13 years old. these days it kind of just seems like nobody uses it

i liked the mixed-media format a little more, and i like tags (as opposed to hashtags which have always been the fucking stupidest thing) but i just... don't get it outside of that

It probably has dropped in usage quite a bit since it's "glory" days, but considering I mostly use it to follow a few friends (who just reblog shitposts) and a few japanese blogs (who just blog cute anime girls) it fits my need quite a bit.

It might help that I am a huge lurker on practically every site I go to as well, I'm on tumblr to laugh at dumb jokes and see cute stuff, and it fills that purpose quite well for me.
