I remember when merely creating text that went up and down, or travelled inwards like a spiral, was an accomplishment. And now we have that.

What a world we live in.

I hoped it was 2008, if just for adding a completely useless tidbit of "hey I got the internet that summer and merry 10 years of internet access to me"

which is kind of laughable when there are people who've had it since before 2001

I signed up for Acmlm's board July 1, 2001, around 9:30 PM. Weird to think about how long it's been...

The activity is nice, but I think a lot of it is just having a good reason to be here. It's hard to want to bother saying something when it's not likely anybody will ever see or read it, and it's a lot easier to just spew thoughts on social media (or IRC/Discord, etc.) ... there's always been an expectation that you should put some thought into what you're saying and write it out here, which also conflicts a lot with people who just don't have much time. Someone on a five minute break probably doesn't have time to catch up on threads and reply to any of them, but it's a lot easier to crap out some thought on Twitter in 30 seconds.

I'm kind of hoping that with people finally starting to realize how bad social media is, maybe we'll see a small resurgence in independent forums like this. Probably not, but it'd be neat.

I guess that's true. But I still see the forums as a place for topics that require more words to talk about, since I can actually try to get my point across without having to deal with limited characters or formatting, unlike on Discord which is meant for more at-the-moment talks where everything vanishes into oblivion fairly quickly.

Social media, such as Twitter for example, are kinda bad on both ends though. Their merit is that, mostly everyone is there, and it's easier to find someone there and reply to them than elsewhere. It's also great for posting about whatever you're working on and whatever you're thinking at any specific moment, specially when you want other people to be able to follow you if they happen to interested in what you do or talk about.

But I'm bad at just spewing out thoughts to random people who I don't really know all that well, specially when I don't actually know who might end up reading what I write. The only reason I have Twitter is to post about what I've been working on, and that's about it (basically an RSS feed with a fancy UI on top of it). Most of the stuff I've said so far has been on forums or Discord/IRC, and I actually really like that.

I guess I just feel much more at home writing here because this is a more closed community rather than social media where everyone feels like they're everywhere but nowhere at the same time.

You tell me. This post for example, took a lot longer to write than I had imagined, mostly because I kept formatting it weirdly and having to re-write it.

also 456 POSTS YEAH

Plus, especially these days, it's really easy to be attention-deficit and also take much longer to read a post, while on Twitter it's a lot easier to just zone out and ignore it (and miss little). If you're behind for too long on a forum thread, you either have to read a whole bunch and catch up or just ignore it all and hope you didn't miss anything important.

Hmm...

I've become of the opinion that social media were a mistake, and fora are still where it's at.

However, I'm not sure if I want to tear down those particular establishments just to unleash yet another Eternal September.

Social media continues to be a mistake, and at least with smaller independent communities you have a hope of keeping things reasonable.

I remember when I was a lad and everybody always told me to never give out my real name on the internet. Then Facebook happened and suddenly everybody was using their real names online and posting photos of themselves and their friends and families, and the internet stopped being fun because it wasn't separate from IRL anymore.

exactly this. it's part of why I've abandoned social media and am sticking to forums and chatrooms, as unfortunately inactive as anything non-social media may be these days...
