Hi! Ever heard of Telefang?



Maybe you've heard of Pokémon Diamond and Jade instead.

Over at Tulunk Village we've been working on a proper English translation patch for nearly ten years.



From manual hex editing and exchanging IPS patches, we've reached the point where we have a work-in-progress disassembly with the English patch built on top of it. It's elegant.

Recently, we (or rather, others - I can't claim much credit!) have been making a lot of progress, with new versions of the patch being released on a monthly schedule. Just yesterday, version 117 was released.

Version 117 features a redesigned Field Guide capable of displaying 3 lines and pagination - and translations to make use of it!


It brings the ability to automatically condense strings where they don't fit...


and a sweet new splash screen.


And many more changes. You can read the full changelog for this release on kmeisthax's blog. (really, do! It's well written.)

Two different types of VWF, too (at least), for when text is too wide?

How much is left to translate in it?

That's right, there are two fonts in right now: a regular one and a narrow one.

Story-wise we're about 40% through. There's also a lot of pretty tough flavor text to go through, for instance phone calls which reference Japanese folk tales or children's songs a lot. We do have a new translator who's been quite active, though. They're being supervised by our primary translator and should be allowed to work on story text now!

Yeah, I'm interested in playing this once the story translation and stuff is finished. Though, I would probably end up not liking it much sadly. I have grown quite, uh, sick of how slow old RPGs are. I have a very hard time going back to old gameboy/colour RPGs that I liked a lot and not hating them when trying to play them today. :<

Anyway, what's done so far on this is all super impressive!

You might be surprised. Telefang's battles are quite fast to go through. They took care to make them smooth, it's even seen in the fact that the Denjuu graphics are uncompressed and take a good chunk of the ROM, just so the 3v3 battles can stay fast paced. Also, you can run in the overworld!
