This is useful. I never assumed anyone's gender by their username color (everyone has fun with the colors anyway) so this helps. Although probably would be more useful if English distinguished genders in the 2nd person as I don't find myself referring to people on the third person here often

Although, I can't help but wonder where we'd be if English had a usable (not "it"), truly gender-neutral (not "neutral he") third person singular personal pronoun (not "they").

In Mandarin Chinese for example, "he" and "she" are homophones, so technically it's always neutral

Neat! Also nice to see the de-prioritization of the gender element of the gender field.

It had already been largely de-emphasized 17 years ago when we all used it for the color, anyway (or set it to ... well, hm)

This just makes it official, and made N/A into "Other / N/A", so it's at least slightly less binary now. In the future, maybe it will be replaced with a "choose your own name color, smarty pants" feature.

E: For now, it still affects grouping in the Memberlist sort options, but that particular choice is going to get removed eventually™.

Yeah, the characters are different in writing (他 vs 她 vs 它) so it only really works in speech. The third one is essentially the Chinese equivalent of "it."

It gets worse in writing though, you can actually specify gender in the 2nd person singular, too. 你 is usually used and for all intents and purposes is neutral, but you can use 妳 to specify female gender (this is fairly rare, though, in my experience). Two characters like this was a natural evolution of 尔 (classical Chinese for "you"), I suppose.

I was hoping that people would use it somewhat seriously, but at least that one isn't terrible, I guess.
